Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
 
 There is yet more sad news this Sunday.    Stokes Hoffman, widower of    Betty Van Arsdale Hoffman, Class of June 1940 (02 Sept 1923 - 26 Aug 2010), passed away in Newport News on Friday, September 21, 2012 at the age of 92.

  NEWPORT NEWS - Ira Stokes Hoffman, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2012.

Born Aug. 19, 1920, in Charlottesville, he was a longtime resident of Newport News. A graduate of VPI class of 1943, he was a veteran of the Army Signal Corps. He retired from NASA, in 1977, after 30 years of service. He was a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church and the James River Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing and tennis.

Stokes was preceded in death by his wife, Emily 'Betty' Van Arsdale Hoffman.

Survivors include a son, Paul S. Hoffman and wife, Laura of Charlottesville; and a daughter, Elizabeth Hoffman Stanhagen and her husband, Eric of Williamsburg. He leaves behind two devoted caregivers, Shirley Johnson and Kathrena Scott.

Friends are welcome to pay their respects from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Peninsula Funeral Home, by the Rev. William G. Lamont. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
