09/22/17 - NNHS Newsletter - Autumn Leaves

“No Spring nor Summer Beauty hath such grace
As I have seen in one Autumnal face.”

John Donne
(21 Jan 1572 - 31 Mar 1631)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

At 4:02 PM EDT today, Fall will officially begin. And because this is one of my favorite songs, it repeats every year as well:

BONUS #1 - - Autumn Leaves - Nat King Cole

BONUS #2 - - Autumn Leaves - Frank Sinatra

BONUS #3 - - Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes) - Edith Piaf

"Autumn Leaves" is a popular song. Originally it was a 1945 French song, "fr:Les feuilles mortes" (literally "The Dead Leaves"), with music by Hungarian-French composer Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert. The Hungarian title is "Hulló levelek" (Falling Leaves). Yves Montand (with Irène Joachim) introduced "Les feuilles mortes" in the film Les Portes de la nuit (1946).[1]

From - 09/21/17:

At a boat rental concession, the manager went to the lake's edge and yelled through his megaphone, "Number 99, come in, please. Your time is up."

Several minutes passed, but the boat didn't return. "Boat number 99," he again hollered, "return to the dock immediately or I'll have to charge you overtime."

"Something is wrong here, boss," his assistant said. "We only have 75 boats. There is no number 99."

The manager thought for a moment and then raised his mega-phone.

"Boat number 66!" he yelled. "Are you having trouble out there?"

 Autumn Leaves

Music by Joseph Kosma, 1945
(22 Oct 1905 – 07 Aug 1969)

French lyrics by
Jacques Prévert, 1945
(04 Feb 1900 - 11 Apr 1977)

English lyrics by
Johnny Mercer, 1947
(18 Nov 1909 – 25 June 1976)

The falling leaves drift by the window,
The autumn leaves of red and gold.
I see your lips, the summer kisses,
The sun-burned hands I used to hold.

Since you went away the days grow long,
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song,
But I miss you most of all, my darling,
When autumn leaves start to fall.
