09/20/10 - NNHS Newsletter - Pretend

“Be careful what you pretend to be because you are what you pretend to be.”

Kurt Vonnegut
(11 Nov 1922 - 11 Apr 2007)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I heard this lovely old Nat King Cole classic on TV last night, and thought it'd be perfect for today's Newsletter.

BONUS - - Pretend - Nat King Cole

"Pretend" is a popular song, written in 1952 by Lew Douglas, Cliff Parman, and Frank Levere.

The best-known recording, by Nat King Cole was released by Capitol Records as catalog number 2346. It first reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on January 31, 1953 and lasted 20 weeks on the chart, peaking at #3. [1]

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 09/19/10 - "Senior citizens":

Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others.

HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took:

The melody out of music,
The pride out of appearance,
The courtesy out of driving,
The romance out of love,
The commitment out of marriage,
The responsibility out of parenthood,
The togetherness out of the family,
The learning out of education,
The service out of patriotism,
The Golden Rule from rulers,
The nativity scene out of cities,
The civility out of behavior,
The refinement out of language,
The dedication out of employment,
The prudence out of spending,
The ambition out of achievement, or,
God out of government and school.

And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!!

And, we do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country.

Does anyone under the age of 50 know the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner?

Just look at the Seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts!

   Amen to that! Thanks, Ruthie!

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 09/19/10 - "THE ONLY SURVIVING PHOTO ALBUM FROM AUSCHWITZ............................":

This is powerful is an understatement. As is spoken within this presentation, "Language lacks the words...", to describe the atrocity of what happened during WWII to many people, and in particular the Jewish people, as presented in this photo album. There are also audio descriptions of what the photos show taking place.
Truly, we must never forget. Why would one people do such a thing to another?
It has also been said, and proven, that once one human can, in their mind, dehumanize another  there is no limit to the pain, suffering, and misery, the first can and will inflict upon the latter!
As requested, I'm sending it on it's way as a reminder to as many as possible. We are talking about Nazis, not Germans of today or some of yesterday.
If you care to share it, please do. If not, and you find it inappropriate for the NL, that's up to you and in no way affects our friendship. But, you knew that.
I am sorry for the "darkness" of the email, but truth is not always bright and shiny!! There are issues that must never be forgotten.
Just for a perspective on how people forget or never learn,     Joe Wingo ('65 - of NC) and I were exchanging email just the other day and he stated that before his retirement from the bank there were "'20 something's" that didn't know who ''The Beatles were!" That being the case, something like this, if not over and over brought to the forefront, will certainly be forgotten.

This is something every American should see and hear.  Let us never forget the horrific attempt of Nazi Germany to exterminate all individuals of Jewish heritage.

This Album memorializes the arrival of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz in May of 1944.
It is the only one of its kind, and it is solely due to this album that we have a visual history of what occurred in the Auschwitz-Birchenau death camp.

The album was discovered after the war by an Auschwitz survivor, Lily Jacob, who donated it to Yad Vashem in 1980.
Now, with the aid of the Internet, it can be viewed by millions of people, anywhere in the world.
Please pass this around to help assure that people will continue to bear witness to this evil legacy.

Thank you so very much, Wayne Honey! There is no way I would NOT share this - for all the reasons you mentioned and then some!

From My Friend, Judy Bundy Bowermaster (Litchfield HS, IL - '59) of IL - 09/14/10 - "Pink Heart" (#4 in a Series of 12):

Love the babies! Thanks! Give this heart to everyone you DON'T want to lose in 2010 including me.

"Be kinder than necessary because everyone
you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

The best vitamin for making friends...B 1.

Friends are like balloons; once you let them go, you might not get them back. Sometimes we get so busy with our own lives and problems that we may not even notice that we've let them fly away. Sometimes we are so caught up in who's right and who's wrong that we forget what's right and wrong. Sometimes we just don't realize what real friendship means until it is too late. I don't want to let that happen so I'm gonna tie you to my heart so I never lose you.  Send it to some balloons that you think have flown away forever. You may be surprised to see it return. Send this heart to everybody you like.

Send this heart to everybody that has touched your life in a positive way. Thank you for being in my life!!!

   Thanks so much, Judy!

Written by Lew Douglas, Cliff Parman, and Frank Levere, 1952

Recorded by Nat King Cole (17 Mar 1919 – 15 Feb 1965)

Pretend you're happy when you're blue
It isn't very hard to do
And you'll find happiness without an end
  Whenever you pretend
  Remember anyone can dream
And nothing's bad as it may seem
The little things you haven't got
Could be a lot if you pretend
You'll find a love you can share
One you can call all your own
Just close your eyes, she'll be there
  You'll never be alone
And if you sing this melody
You'll be pretending just like me
The world is mine, it can be yours, my friend
  So why don't you pretend?
  <instrumental interlude>
And if you sing this melody
You'll be pretending just like me
The world is mine, it can be yours, my friend
  So why don't you pretend?
