Friday evening we’ll meet at 7:00 PM at the home of    Lynn Walker Brothers ’65 and her husband Barry (York HS - '65).  They have graciously extended an offer to open their home for the event.  Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, and we would request a $5.00 donation to assist in covering the expenses for that evening if you attend.  The change in location was decided when members of the reunion committee thought the original location might not be as suitable for conversation as originally planned.  The Brothers residence is located at 304 Dogwood Drive, Newport News.  The telephone number is 757-595-4116.  We’ll post a map providing directions.

From Helen Avant Neal ('57) of VA - 09/16/10 (but somehow hiding in cyberspace) - "Hi from Helen":

Carol, not sure you will get this but........please let everyone know my new phone #___-___-____ - that is, if you list phone numbers.

Also, I would like to have
Sydney Dearing's ('56 - of TN) e-mail address to respond to his message a while back.  He and I were childhood friends........ah memories:)

You do a great job with this Newsletter.

Thank you, Helen Avant Neal

Thank you, Helen! I don't generally publish phone numbers out of privacy concerns, but I have filed yours in a safe place!  And somewhat belatedly I have forwarded your note to Sydney. Assuming the Spam Patrol doesn't intercept my note, you should be hearing from him soon. If not, let me know, and we'll try again!

From Liz Breeden ('61) of VA - 09/16/10 - "Slow Dance":

We should all take this to heart and slow dance. This is one e-mail I hope I receive a million times over.

Liz

LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST; IT'S THE ONLY ONE THAT YOU HAVE!!!!

...This poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a New York Hospital.

Slow Dance

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You'd better slow down.

Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.
Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask, How are you?
Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not seen his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
'Cause you never had time
To call and say, 'Hi'?

You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last..

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

This is the request of a special girl who will soon leave this world due to cancer. This young girl has 6 months left to live, and as her dying wish, she wanted to send a letter telling everyone to live their life to the fullest, as she never will. She'll never make it to prom, graduate from high school, or get married and have a family of her own. By your sending this to as many people as possible, you can give her and her family a little hope.....

PLEASE PASS ON AS A LAST REQUEST.

Thank you so much for this tender reminder, Liz!

  From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH - 09/18/10 - "spam filters":

Carol, the spam filters have gotten out of control. I work for the State of NH, Office of Information Technology; I'm "embedded" at New Hampshire Employment Security-- the state agency that handles unemployment claims and the Wagner-Peyser NH Works Job Match System for job seekers and employers. My work e-mail address, like that of everyone else who works for the state of New Hampshire, ends in nh.gov-- you'd think that's pretty clearly official e-mail from the state of NH, wouldn't you? Apparently yahoo has decided we're spammers-- this week I had reports from staff that e-mail they sent to claimants, job seekers, and employers with yahoo e-mail accounts was being rejected.

In other news, I am scheduled to retire Dec 1, "the Lord willin' and the the cricks don't rise". Where did the years go?

Domi

Well, now, isn't that special?!? And I thought it strange that Yahoo classified mail I sent to myself as spam!

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement, Domi! I certainly don't know where all that time went! Seems like only yesterday...

From Eva Ellis Madagan ('61) of FL - 09/18/10 - "Pencils":

A PENCIL MAKER TOLD THE PENCIL 5 IMPORTANT LESSONS JUST BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE BOX :

1.) EVERYTHING YOU DO WILL ALWAYS LEAVE A MARK.

2.) YOU CAN ALWAYS CORRECT THE MISTAKES YOU MAKE.

3.) WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS WHAT IS INSIDE OF YOU.

4.) IN LIFE, YOU WILL UNDERGO PAINFUL SHARPENINGS, WHICH WILL ONLY MAKE YOU BETTER.

5.) TO BE THE BEST PENCIL, YOU MUST ALLOW YOURSELF
TO BE HELD AND GUIDED BY THE HAND THAT HOLDS YOU.

We all need to be constantly sharpened. This parable may encourage you to know that you are a special person, with unique God-given talents and abilities.  Only you can fulfill the purpose which you were born to accomplish. Never allow yourself to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant and cannot be changed and, like the pencil, always remember that the most important part of who you are, is what's inside of you and then allow yourself to be guided by the hand of God.

    AMEN! Thanks so much, Eva!

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 09/18/10 - "Good One":

CBD<

Dan Crockett ('65 - of FL) sent this my way--what do you think? Good one or better?

Thank you so much, Wayne Honey! It's waaay better than good! It doesn't matter how often I see clips of such homecomings; they always have the same effect upon me!

From My Friend, Judy Bundy Bowermaster (Litchfield HS, IL - '59) of IL - 09/14/10 - "Pink Heart" (#3 in a Series of 12):

Love the babies! Thanks! Give this heart to everyone you DON'T want to lose in 2010 including me.

"Be kinder than necessary because everyone
you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
"

Of all the things I wear, my expression is the most important.

Friends are like balloons; once you let them go, you might not get them back. Sometimes we get so busy with our own lives and problems that we may not even notice that we've let them fly away. Sometimes we are so caught up in who's right and who's wrong that we forget what's right and wrong. Sometimes we just don't realize what real friendship means until it is too late. I don't want to let that happen so I'm gonna tie you to my heart so I never lose you.  Send it to some balloons that you think have flown away forever. You may be surprised to see it return. Send this heart to everybody you like.

Send this heart to everybody that has touched your life in a positive way. Thank you for being in my life!!!

   Thanks so much, Judy!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) - 09/10/10 - "~Old Timers~ (#7 of 10)":

Carol,

Only one a day.

A senior citizen said to his eighty-year old buddy: 'So I hear you're getting married?'

'Yep!'

'Do I know her?'

'Nope!'

'This woman, is she good looking?'

'Not really.'

'Is she a good cook?'

'Naw, she can't cook too well..'

'Does she have lots of money?'

'Nope! Poor as a church mouse.'

'Well, then, is she good in bed?'

'I don't know.'

'Why in the world do you want to marry her then?'

'Because she can still drive!'

     Thanks, Norris!

The Pirate Song

- Lesley Nelson-Burns

My boat's by the tower, and my bark's on the bay,
and both must be gone at the dawn of the day.
The moon's in her shroud, and to light thee afar
On the deck of the daring's a lovelighted star.
So wake, lady wake, I am waiting for thee,
Oh, this night or never my bride thou shalt be,
So wake, lady wake, I am waiting for thee,
Oh, this night or never my bride thou shalt be,

So forgive me my rough mood unaccustomed to sue;
I woo not, perhaps, as your landlubbers do.
My voice is attuned to the sound of the gun
That startles the deep when the combat's begun.
So wake, lady wake, I am waiting for thee,
Oh, this night or never my bride thou shalt be,
So wake, lady wake, I am waiting for thee,
Oh, this night or never my bride thou shalt be,

The Frenchman and Don will flee from our path,
and the Englishmen cower below at our wrath,
And our sails shall be gilt in the gold of the day,
And the sea robins sing as we roll on our way.
So wake, lady wake, I am waiting for thee,
Oh, this night or never my bride thou shalt be,
So wake, lady wake, I am waiting for thee,
Oh, this night or never my bride thou shalt be,

A hundred shall serve - the best of the brave,
And the chief of a thousand shall kneel as thy slave,
And thou shalt reign queen, and thy empire shall last
Till the black flag by inches, is torn from the mast.
So wake, lady wake, I am waiting for thee,
Oh, this night or never my bride thou shalt be,
So wake, lady wake, I am waiting for thee,
Oh, this night or never my bride thou shalt be,
