Wind Beneath My Wings

“A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tries
to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone
who saves people and who really deeply cares.”

- Debi Mazar
(b. 13 Aug 1964)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We all need heroes in our lives.....

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_Beneath_My_Wings:

"Wind Beneath My Wings" (sometimes titled "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Hero") is the title of a song written in 1982 by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley.[1] They recorded a demo of the song, which they gave to musician Bob Montgomery. Montgomery then recorded his own demo version of the song, changing it from the mid-tempo version he was given to a ballad. Silbar and Henley then shopped the song to many artists, eventually resulting in Roger Whittaker becoming the first to release the song commercially. It appeared on his 1982 studio album, also titled Wind Beneath My Wings.

Following Whittaker's recording, many other artists recorded the song, including Sheena Easton (who also recorded it in 1982). Easton's version appeared on her 1982 studio album Madness, Money & Music, though it was not released as a single by her record company. She did, however, perform it on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Merv Griffin Show, her HBO live concert special, as well as her NBC television special.

1983 was the first year "Wind Beneath My Wings" appeared on music industry trade publication charts in the United States. Singer Lou Rawls was the first to score a major hit with the song, as his version peaked at #10 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, as well as #60 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart and #65 on the main Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.[2] Gladys Knight & The Pips also released a recording of the song in 1983 under the title "Hero", and their version peaked at #64 on Billboard' Hot Black Singles chart[3] while also reaching #23 on Billboard' Adult Contemporary chart. Singer Gary Morris released a country version of the song in 1983 that charted highest on any of the Billboard music charts that year. Morris's version of the song peaked at #4 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, and also later won both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association awards for Song Of The Year.

But the highest-charting version of the song to date was recorded in 1988 by singer and actress Bette Midler for the soundtrack to the film Beaches. This version of "Wind Beneath My Wings" was released as a single in early 1989, spent one week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in June 1989, and won Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year in February 1990. On October 24, 1991, Midler's single was also certitifed Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipment of one million copies in the United States...

From Brenda Shepard McCoy ('67) of VA - 09/16/17 - "A FRIEND GAVE ME THIS RECIPE AND MY NAILS STOPPED BREAKING AND THEY GROW HEALTHY AND FAST":

All women would like to have big and strong nails, because the big nails help to make it look great the manicure that we constantly do when we want to impress others.

However not all of us have the big nails that we want because the growth of the nails is slow and many times we are broken in the way since many we have fragile nail.

Having strong and long nails are the desire of all women who must be every week touching up their acrylic in the aesthetic centers. However this is not impossible.

Our nails contain a kind of protein called keratin. And our toenails are the ones that usually grow faster compared to our finger nail.

Many aspects can cause a slow growth of the nails for example medicines, some hormonal modifications, nutritional health problems.

Then in today’s article, we have decided to share some remedies that will help you to accelerate the growth of nails. One of the ingredients is garlic. This is considered one of the best recognized home remedies with regard to accelerated nail growth. This protects our own nails against any contamination as it is an antifungal as well as antibacterial attributes.

The use of a strengthener is essential to solve the problem of weak nails. Although there are special products to harden them, we are going to propose a very simple and economical remedy for you to create your own nail hardener.

For the next treatment you will need vitamin E capsules sold in pharmacies and ingredients as simple as lemon and garlic. The advantage of this home hardener above commercial is that it contains a higher concentration of vitamins and minerals rather than aggressive chemicals.

Garlic has sulphurous substances that penetrate easily, strengthening the whole structure of the nail. In addition, vitamin E provides moisturization, stimulates its growth and decreases the weakening. In addition we add a little lemon to diminish the spots, the yellow color and possible fungi.

NATURAL METHODS TO GROW NAILS

INGREDIENTS:

- A transparent nail polish
- 3 cloves garlic, peeled
- 20 drops of lemon juice.
- 1 capsule of vitamin E

PREPARATION AND USE:

The first step in the preparation of this hardener will be to soak the 3 cloves of garlic in hot water for about 15 minutes and crush them until you get a paste.

Then pour the paste along with the contents of the vitamin E capsule in the enamel, add also about 20 drops of lemon and stir well for a few seconds, until everything is well mixed.

Let it macerate from day to day and ready. Apply a small amount of enamel on weak nails and let it dry thoroughly. Repeat its use every day.

Once a thin layer is formed, remove it with a little remove enamel and repeat its application with the fresh product. The treatment should last at least a month to obtain favorable results.

   WOWZERS! Thank you, Brenda!

From My Cousin, Jean Atkinson Mallory (Warsaw HS / Rappahannock HS / John Marshall HS - '65) of VA - 09/16/16:

  SO TRUE! Thank you, Jean!

From Bill Hobbs ('66) of Northern VA - 09/16/16 - "The Gift of Time":

The Gift of Time

The last wishes of Alexander the Great.

On his death bed, Alexander summoned his army generals and told them his three ultimate wishes:

1. The best doctors should carry his coffin.

2. The wealth he has accumulated (money, gold, precious stones) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery.

3. His hands should be let loose, so they hang outside the coffin for all to see.

One of his generals who was surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say:

1. "I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal."

2. "I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, will stay on earth."

3. I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is: TIME.

We do not take to our grave any material wealth. TIME is our most precious treasure because it is LIMITED. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back. Our time is our life!

The best present that you can give to your family and friends is your TIME. May you be granted plenty of TIME, to share with all.

Thank you so much, Billy!

“She wasn’t much for words, but she told me she loved me in other ways, like showing me her main superpower—invisibility. I often wouldn’t see her for weeks straight, and for her to show me the unshowable showed a lot of trust in our relationship.

Wind Beneath My Wings

Written by
Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley (b. 30 June 1941), 1982

Recorded by Bette Midler (b. 01 Dec 1945), 1988

It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way,
you always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name -- for so long,
a beautiful smile to hide the pain.

CHORUS:
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and ev'rything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it,
I would be nothing with out you.

(CHORUS)

Fly, fly, fly away,
you let me fly so high.
Oh, fly, fly,
so high against the sky, so high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you,
the wind beneath my wings.
