09/10/18 - NNHS Newsletter - Wilton "Brad" Bradford

Clarence Wilton Bradford, III
(08 July 1943 - 07 Sept 2018)

Newport News High School Class of 1961

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   I am shocked and saddened to bring you this news today. Wilton "Brad" Bradford, Class of 1961, brother of the late Mike "Moby" Bradford ('66), and son of our NNHS Cafeteria Manager, the late Mrs. Lallie Bradford Barritt, passed away in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina on Friday, September 07, 2018 at the age of 75.

From Karrin Williams Frankie (NNHS / Warwick HS - '61) of VA - 09/10/18, 6:48 PM:

I just learned that Wilton Bradford, NNHS ’61 passed away in Roanoke Rapids, NC on 07 Sept. It was in the Daily Press today. His brother, Michael NNHS ’66, died several years ago. Wilton grew across the street from me on Buxton Avenue. Was very shocked to learn of his death. Out of “our playmates” this only leaves Johnny Oldfield ('61), Jerry Burks ('62), and me! So sad.

Karrin Williams Frankie WHS ‘61

   Oh, Karrin, I'm so very sorry to learn this! I must have read the obituaries too soon in the morning, because I completely missed this.

   Wilton and I were in band together during the last few school months of 1961, when the eighth graders who made in into the Senior Band were allowed to join them. As Wilton was a drummer and I a flute player, I marched in the rank right in front of his, and grew to know him when otherwise I never would have had that opportunity. You have my deepest condolences on the loss of your old friend.

Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me

Words by Edward Hopper

Music by John E. Gould, 1871

Jesus Savior, pilot me over life's tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll, hiding rock and treacherous shoal;
Chart and compass came from Thee; Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

As a mother stills her child, Thou canst hush the ocean wild;
Boisterous waves obey Thy will, when Thou say'st to them "Be still!"
Wondrous Sov'reign of the sea, Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

When at last I near the shore and the fearful breakers roar,
'Twixt me and the peaceful rest; then, while leaning on Thy breast,
May I hear Thee say to me, "Fear not, I will pilot thee."
