Thanks,

Dave
captarnold@vprj.net

Friday evening we’ll meet at 7:00 PM at the home of    Lynn Walker Brothers ’65 and her husband Barry (York HS - '65).  They have graciously extended an offer to open their home for the event.  Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, and we would request a $5.00 donation to assist in covering the expenses for that evening if you attend.  The change in location was decided when members of the reunion committee thought the original location might not be as suitable for conversation as originally planned.  The Brothers residence is located at 304 Dogwood Drive, Newport News.  The telephone number is 757-595-4116.  We’ll post a map providing directions.

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) - 08/05/10 and 09/03/10 - "Vote for Grace (REPEATED)":

This is my daughter Laura's dog in a contest to be on the cover of a bag of dog food.

Vote every day for Grace. Thanks.

Oh, Laura is your daughter, Norris! Well, that makes it all the more important! When I tried to vote for Grace again today, I noticed the site was trying to pull a switcheroo on me. It tried to persuade me to vote for the wrong Grace!  OH, NO!

That's why I've included the link to all the candidates named Grace, along with the image of The Real Grace, lest there be any confusion. As y'all can see, she's a Weimaraner from Richmond.

http://www.adogslife.net/photo_gallery.php?pg=&limit=40&sort=tnid&type=tnap&field=dog_name&keyword=grace#14296

Grace is #1 in pet of the month: http://www.adogslife.net/photo_gallery_contests.php?t=1

and #3 in pet of the year: http://www.adogslife.net/photo_gallery_contests.php?t=2

  WOWZERONI!!! That's fabulous, Norris!

Vote early, and vote often - or at least cast your allotted daily vote!

From Jane Monfalcone Simmons ('61) of FL - 09/04/10:

Hi Carol,

I just ran across some old memorabilia and found this written by my daddy. As I remember the story, the USS Pasadena was directly behind the Missouri as they entered Tokyo Bay.

Hope it comes through ok.

And, many, many, thanks for all you do. It means so much to so many of us!

WOWZERONI-RINI!!! How cool is it to have a first-person narrative by one of our own!

Notice the language dates before the days of "political correctness".

I have double-posted this image on our site.  It's in chronological order on the Odds and Ends page, and I took the liberty of adding your father to our Famous Sailors page (his bio is extremely sketchy, though...):

From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA -  09/04/10 - "Print out and keep handy..":

4 Things You Never Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do

For all the folks with cell phones. (This should be printed and kept in your car, purse, and wallet. Good information to have with you.)There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.
Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.

Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST (Emergency)

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an Emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly, this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND (Hidden Battery Power)
- MAY OR MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE ON YOUR PARTICULAR PHONE - AND MAY OR MAY NOT DECREASE THE LIFE OF YOUR BATTERY

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell phone next time.

THIRD
(How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
)
- MAY OR MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE ON YOUR PARTICULAR PHONE - AND MAY NOT BE VERY EFFECTIVE IN FORESTALLING CHARGES

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following Digits on your phone:

                  *#06#
A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

If your phone is stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

And Finally....

FOURTH
 (Free Directory Service for Cells)

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial:

                (800) FREE411   or   (800) 373-3411
without incurring any charge at all -
EXCEPT FOR THE NORMAL CHARGES FOR USING YOUR PHONE.  Program this into your cell phone now. This is sponsored by McDonalds.

This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.

   WOWZERONI! Thanks so much, Renee!

Well, actually, it seems to be a mixture of Truth and Fiction, so I mostly removed the fiction:

http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/c/cell%20phones.htm

http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/cellphones.asp

   Still.

HMMM. These two reports do not even agree with each other! They shouldn't try to make me crazy; they're too late - far, far, too late!

I personally am still trying to learn how to use my new smart phone that         Brent (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL - '90 - of TX) and   Bethany (Winona Harty - Siuslaw HS, OR - '94 - of TX) gave me.  A teenaged girl at church showed me how to add New Contacts.  My sister taught me how to use Call Waiting and Speaker Phone.  Someday soon I shall learn how to listen to my messages ("Contact your Verizon representative to set your new PIN...").  Don't bother leaving me one now.  I won't hear it.

Next lesson - "How to Text"!

From My #5 Son, Nathaniel Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '97) of IL - 09/06/10 - "U.S. Open fight":

Here's that brawl you said you missed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzEFQ1LQBag

YOWZERONI!!! And this all started because this fellow and his friend wouldn't let these two people pass them to visit the restrooms?!? It's just as my grandfather always said, "There is never any justification for rudeness."

   Thanks, Faniel!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL -  09/06/10 - "Honoring Our Fallen in Cape May Point, NJ for 38 Years!":

I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this till now….

Check this out! Thanks to CBS for reporting!

http://www.comcast.net/video/honoring-fallen-vets/1536192981/

WOWZERONI!!! Now that's more like it! Thanks, Dools!

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 09/06/10 - "Who... ME???":

No, I have not seen your lipstick,

why would you even ask me that?

I'm insulted!

Every time something goes missing around here,

everybody looks at me!

      Thanks, Ruthie!

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes:

Three Little Pigs

One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig was trying to accumulate the building materials for his home.

She read, "And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrow full of straw and said, 'Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?'"

The teacher paused then, asked the class, "And what do you think that man said?"

One little boy raised his hand and said, "I think he said, 'Holy Cow! A talking pig!'"

The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes.

September Morn

Written by Neil Diamond (b. 24 Jan 1941) and Gilbert Bécaud (24 Oct 1927 – 18 Dec 2001),

Recorded by Neil Diamond (b. 24 Jan 1941), 1979

Stay for just a while
Stay, and let me look at you
Its been so long, I hardly knew you
Standing in the door
Stay with me a while
I only want to talk to you
We've traveled halfway round the world
To find ourselves again

September morn
We danced until the night became a brand new day
Two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play
September morning still can make me feel this way

Look at what you've done
Why, you've become a grown-up girl
I still can hear you cryin'
In the corner of your room
And look how far we've come
So far from where we used to be
But not so far that we've forgotten
How it was before

September morn
Do you remember how we danced that night away
Two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play
September morning still can make me feel this way
