09/06/12 - NNHS Newsletter - Sugar Sugar

“Affluence separates people. Poverty knits 'em together.
You got some sugar and I don't; I borrow some of yours.
Next month you might not have any flour; well,
I'll give you some of mine.”

Ray Charles
(23 Sept 1930 - 10 June 2004)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I think we should repeat this theme song every year on this day in honor of Sarah Sugah's birthday!

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JywK_5bT8z0 - Sugar Sugar - The Archies, 1969

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar,_Sugar:

"Sugar, Sugar" is a pop song written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. It was a four-week 1969 number-one hit single by fictional characters The Archies. Produced by Jeff Barry, the song was originally released on the album Everything's Archie. The album is the product of a group of studio musicians managed by Don Kirshner. Ron Dante's lead vocals were accompanied by those of Toni Wine (who sang the line "I'm gonna make your life so sweet"), and Andy Kim. Together they provided the voices of the Archies using multitracking.

When the song was initially released, Kirshner had promotion men play it for radio station execs without telling them the name of the group (due to the somewhat disappointing chart performance of the Archies' previous single, "Bang-Shang-a-Lang," which went to #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts). Only after most of the DJs liked the song were they told that it was performed by a cartoon group. The Archies’ hit wound up as one of the biggest (and most unexpected) #1 hits of the year, one of the biggest bubblegum hits of all time, both in America and in Great Britain, thanks partly to association with the hit CBS-TV Saturday morning cartoon series.

The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" was the 1969 number-one single of the year...

From My Daughter, Adrienne Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL) of NC - currently serving an eighteen-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Seattle, Washington - 09/04/12, 1:42 PM - "Pictures":

Well, strange thing happened in our mission this week.  We always receive transfer calls on Sunday night.  We actually got them Monday morning.  When there are an even amount of Sisters,    President (Todd S.) Larkin typically takes out the trios and makes more areas for us to serve in.  There are an even amount of Sisters.  The thing is that not only did we stay in our trio, but he closed down a sister area and made another trio!  TWO TRIOS!  It's like unheard of here!  Obviously he was inspired, but I think the missionaries are all reeling at this huge change.  Half of the sisters were transferred too!  It's a HUGE change!

Anyway, here are 4 pictures (I'll send another email with more) and the first is of last transfer day.  L-R: Sisters Hirano, Johnson, Anderson, Ate (pronounced "ah-tay" - she is Tongon, but she said she doesn't know   Sister (Pessi) Tilini), and me, of course.

The (next) one is a beautiful sunset that is typical here in Snoqualmie.  The (next) two pictures are the Waters of Mormon... okay, it's actually Snoqualmie Falls...

(The next) picture is of our district this last transfer. L-R: me, Sister Clement, Sister Feller, Elder Riddle (our 6'7 zone leader), Elder Gilbert (our accountant zone leader), Elder Clark, Elder Yamashita (his father -   Elder Kazuhiko Yamashita - is a general authority), Sister Pope, and Elder Pope (senior couple serving in May Valley along with Elder Clark and Yamashita).

I haven't found out who all is in our district this transfer, though. On Friday we will have our zone meeting and on Tuesday, our district meeting.

The last is of SE Lewis Street. It is right next to our church building in Issaquah. Even though its intention is South East Lewis Street, I like to think of it as   Simeon English Lewis (         Paul's (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC)  maternal grandfather), right?

Anyway, enjoy!

Love,
Sister Harty

From My #2 Daughter-in-Law, Bethany Winona Harty (Siuslaw HS, OR - '94) of TX - 09/04/12:

How I see word problems...
If you have 4 pencils and I have 7 apples, how many pancakes will fit on the roof?
Answer: Purple, because lions don't wear hats.

I totally agree, Bethany, thanks! This reminds me of one of my favorite pieces of nonsense here:

Hang on, Jean, the trains are running again!

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 09/04/12, 5:02 PM - "THE MAN RULES":

I didn't write these, but I could have!!:-) Take it as meant--in fun!

the MAN rules
At last a guy has taken the time to write this all down

Finally , the guys' side of the story.
(
I must admit, it's pretty good.)
We always hear
"the rules"
From the female side.

Now here are the rules from the male side.

These are our rules!
Please note.. these are all numbered "1 "
ON PURPOSE!

1.   Men are NOT mind readers.

1. Learn to work the toilet seat.
You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down.
We need it up, you need it down.
You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports - It's like the full moon
or the changing of the tides.
Let it be.

1. Shopping is NOT a sport.
And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want.
Let us be clear on this one:
Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem
only if you want help solving it. That's what we do.
Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument.
In fact, all comments become Null and void after 7 Days.

1. If you think you're fat, you probably are.
Don't ask us.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the
 other one.

1. You can either ask us to do something
Or tell us how you want it done.
Not both.
If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials..

1. Christopher Columbus did
NOT need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings.
Peach, for example, is a fruit, not
A color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have
no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it
will be scratched.
We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," We will act like nothing's wrong.
We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, Expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine...
Really .

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as baseball or
golf.

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape.
Round IS a shape!

1. Thank you for reading this.
Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight;

But did you know men really don't mind that? It's like camping.

WILD GIGGLES!!! Thanks, Wayne Honey! You may be surprised to learn that due to some strange hormonal imbalance of mine, I completely agree with almost all of this! Except that asking of directions thing. And the shoes. I don't have nearly enough shoes.

And the toilet seat issue?? BOTH the seat AND the lid should ALWAYS be kept closed by EVERYBODY! WHY?? Otherwise the pretty crocheted toilet seat cover won't show, and more importantly your pet cockatiel might fly into the bathroom, jump into the toilet bowl and drown!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 09/05/12:

A defendant in a lawsuit involving large sums of money was talking to his lawyer. "If I lose this case, I'll be ruined."

"It's in the judge's hands now," said the lawyer.

"Would it help if I sent the judge a box of cigars?"

"Oh no! This judge is a stickler on ethical behavior. A stunt like that would prejudice him against you. He might even hold you in contempt of court. In fact, you shouldn't even smile at the judge."

Within the course of time, the judge rendered a decision in favor of the defendant. As the defendant left the courthouse, he said to his lawyer, "Thanks for the tip about the cigars. It worked!"

"I'm sure we would have lost the case if you'd sent them."

"But, I did send them."

"What? You did?" said the lawyer, incredulously.

"Yes. That's how we won the case."

"I don't understand," said the lawyer.

"It's easy. I sent the cigars to the judge, but enclosed the plaintiff's business card."
