Rosalie Conwell Hawkes
(11 May 1926 - 02 Sept 2009)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I was reading the Daily Press obituaries this morning (as I do every morning), and was astonished to find there the first cousin of       my father, the late Robert Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25)

Rosalie Conwell Hawkes passed away in Newport News on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the age of 83.  Her mother, Cornelia Elsie Buckley Conwell, was my paternal  grandfather's baby sister.

The youngest of eleven children born to her parents, she herself was the mother of Jan Hawkes Stringer (Warwick HS), Bill Hawkes (Warwick HS), and Mike Hawkes (Warwick HS).

Twenty-five years ago, I knew that she and her family had moved to Newport News, but I had long since forgotten it.

As she and her husband were married in Richmond on April 5, 1946, and her obituary states that she had lived in Newport News for more than 60 years, I am wondering when her children graduated from Warwick High.  But of course what I really am wondering is - why did I never know them??

Going Home

Music -
Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 (popularly known as the New World Symphony), 1893
(08 Sept 1841 – 01 May 1904)

Lyrics added by Dvořák's pupil, William Arms Fisher

Going home, going home
I'm just going home
Quiet light, some still day
I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
Going to fear no more
Mother's there expecting me
Father's waiting, too
Lots of folk gathered there
All the friends I knew
All the friends I knew
I'm going home
Nothing's lost, all's gain
No more fret nor pain
No more stumbling on the way
No more longing for the day
Going to roam no more
Morning star lights the way
Restless dream all done
Shadows gone, break of day
Real life begun
There's no break, there's no end
Just a living on
Wide awake with a smile
Going on and on
Going home, going home
I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
I am going home
I'm just going home
Going home, going home
