I worked with Sarah at C&P Telephone Co. in the 1960s. We had remained close friends ever since. I have never known a more generous person. A true loss to family and friends.

Sarah Elder, I always used to love calling you, You name was just as wonderful as you. One of the best things about having Bonnie for a best friend was having you as a second Mom. That title fit you so well; you were truly an incredible mother and loved with every fiber of your being. Thank you for always making me feel loved and welcome in your home, and always putting up with our adventures and antics.
You were a Giant of a woman, and have left a huge void in all of our lives. This world is such a better place simply because you lived.
You will be forever missed. Fly high, Sarah Elder, Fly Free. Love you always, Golie

I remember Sarah and her sisters "The Gilliam Girls" in the 60's shopping at Parisian Shop, downtown Newport News. Sarah was always smiling and happy to be out with her sisters. Sarah was beautiful, inside and out.

Shall We Gather at the River

Words and Music by Rev. Robert Lowry (1826-1899)

 Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?

Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.

On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.

Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

Soon we'll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.
