08/30/04 - NNHS Newsletter - SPECIAL - All Basketball!

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Happy 57th Birthday today to Chuck Spring field ('65) of VA and - oh, yeah - to ME!

As my birthday gift to you, I'm happy to announce the release of the (trumpet fanfare, please!) long-awaited BASKETBALL

Some months ago, I offered you the Senior Band pages which included all the Varsity Flagtwirlers from the Senior
Classes of 1955 to 1965, those being the Anchors to which I have access.

I was awakened in the middle of the night by a guilty feeling concerning the Cheerleaders.  By its very nature it included
both the Varsity and Junior Varsity, so up went that very extensive section of hard-working and beautiful girls.

Then I realized that to be fair, I would have to begin the Junior Band and Junior Varsity Flagtwirlers.  They are actually
next in line, and still waiting - patiently.

But then Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA sent me a note:

"It begs the question, for WHOM were they all cheering?"

OUCH.  Guilty pangs attacking....okay, Wayne - excellent point!

In March I created the I964 State Basketball Championship page, coinciding with the 40th Anniversary of that title.

Billy Turner ('65) of TX wrote a magnificent background article for it at my request (Thanks, Billy Turner!).  For those
of you who may not be aware, Billy Turner (that's still one word, just like Charlie Brown) was not only a member of the
1964 State Basketball Championship Team, having won a double basketball/baseball scholarship to Old Dominion,
he later coached at NNHS before going on to coach at the University of Maryland and the Citadel.

We started soliciting "civilian" memories for the page.  By the way, there's PLENTY of room for more!

But then something strange happened.  I've no idea how to explain it, but I really think Joe Madagan ('57) of FL is totally
responsible for the creation of these pages.  I just don't know how he did it.  In countless emails, he never once asked me.
I haven't seen him in person since he tried to teach me how to swim 47 years ago.  Still, I knew he wanted me to make
these basketball pages, and to move them up to the front burner.  So I did.  Is there such a thing as subliminal email??
GIGGLES!  Thanks so much, Joe!

Once again I awoke in the middle of the night with the vision of the BASKETBALL PAGES, and started scanning.

On August 10, just hours after I had begun the initial preparations,  Charlie Hilling ('56) of FL sent me that adorable
image of the 1950 North End Basketball Champions, which is doubly-posted on North End and Odds and Ends
What a subtle nudge and confirmation!  Thanks, Charlie!

When all was nearly complete, Rick Billings ('65) of NC, a member of the 1964 State Championship Team, sent
Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA
two Tournament Programs from that fabulous year.  Dave scanned them and sent these
priceless treasures to me.  Seeing them reduced me to tears (not that I ever cry or anything...).  One is posted on the
1964 page itself, and the other on the 1964 Tourney page.  Thanks so much, Rick and Dave!

Then Joe Madagan ('57) of FL, Manager of the 1957 State Championship Team, sent me all sorts of things.  Joe
has been a fount of knowledge on a great many subjects, and on this particular one, he has the wisdom and experience
of an insider.  You'll not miss my favorite contribution of his - a precious picture of him with his two-year-old granddaughter,
Hannah Grace Madagan
, cheering on her father's team when he was the Assistant Basketball Coach at University
of South Florida.  Did I neglect to mention that Joe's son, Michael Madagan, is now the Head Basketball Coach at St. Leo
University in FL?  Thanks so much, Joe!

For a final treat, on August 23rd, Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA with all his magic powers (oh, yes, let there be no doubt -
he IS magical!) went to the Hilton Library and found the newspapers covering the 1964 Tournament and somehow sent
them to me for inclusion on both of the 1964 pages.  WOWZERS!  Thanks, Dave!

Information on the Head Coaches is linked to each appropriate page:

Bill Chambers

"Lefty" Driesell

Warren Mitchell

Charlie Woollum

None of this would have been possible without four things being in place.

1. My sister, Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky ('59), who lives four miles away from me here in Fayetteville, NC, loaned me
her '55 to '59 Anchors so that I could scan away.  Thanks, Eleanor!  I promise I'll give them back soon.  Fairly soon.....

2. Fred Mays ('60) of VA, not only let Jimmy Parker ('62) of VA, Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA, and me tour his fabulous
collection of NN and NNHS memorabilia two days after Christmas, but as we were leaving, he graciously presented me
with a 1960 Anchor from his collection, thus closing the gap between Eleanor's yearbooks and mine.  Thanks so much,

3.  When we elected to go with a paid web server last year, and increased its capabilities to Gold Status on July 26 of this
year, we have the tremendous amount of space and bandwidth necessary to present and preserve all these things for you.
And for that we have all of y'all to thank, because as much as I'd always dreamed of being Rich and Famous in life, when
Life came, I opted for other choices.  So I thank you, one and all.

4. As always, a heartfelt thanks goes to Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA, who in spite of heading up the Reunion Committee
for the Class of 1964
(as well as the normal responsibilities of a very active life), nevertheless found time to find us the
perfect music for all these and many other pages.  Thanks so much, Dave!

So here they are - the ALL- BASKETBALL links:

And Happy Birthday from me!  I hope you enjoy them.  And to all the teams, managers, and coaches -
we salute you.  Thanks for all your hard work and incredible effort over the years, and for all the precious
memories you've given us all.

Y'all take care of each other.

                         Love to all, Carol

Rubber Ball

Rubber ball, I come bouncin' back to you,
rubber ball, I come bouncin' back to you

I'm like a - rubber ball, baby that's all
that I am to you (bouncy, bouncy) (bouncy, bouncy)
Just a rubber ball 'cuz you think you
can be true to two (bouncy, bouncy) (bouncy, bouncy).
You bounce my heart around (You don't even put her down)
And like a rubber ball, I come bouncin' back to you
rubber ball, I come bouncin' back to you.

If you - stretch my love 'til it's thin enough to tear
I'll just stretch my arms to reach you anywhere
And like a -
Rubber ball, I'll come bouncin' back to you
rubber ball, I'll come bouncin' back to you

You bounce my heart around (You don't even put her down)
And like a rubber ball, I come bouncin' back to you
Rubber ball, I come bouncin' back to you
Bouncy, bouncy ... bouncy, bouncy
bouncy, bouncy... bouncy, bouncy

I'm like a - rubber band when on my shoulder
you do tap (bouncy, bouncy) (bouncy, bouncy).
Just a rubber band because my heart-strings,
they just snap (bouncy, bouncy) (bouncy, bouncy)
You go and: squeeze me 'til I'm all aflame
(She calls you by some other guy's name)

But like a rubber ball, I come bouncin' back to you
Rubber ball, I come bouncin' back to you
rubber ball, I'll come bouncin' back to you
rubber ball, I'll come bouncin' back to you
rubber ball, I'll come bouncin' back to you
rubber ball, etc ... Fade out (repeated 7 times).
