Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)

“Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.”

- Groucho Marx
(02 Oct 1890 - 19 Aug 1977)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today is National Banana Lovers Day. "I am not making this up." - Dave Barry (b. 03 July 1947)

BONUS - Day-O (The Banana Boat Song - Harry Belafonte, 1956

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day-O_(The_Banana_Boat_Song):

"Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" is a traditional Jamaican folk song; the best-known version was released by Jamaican-American singer Harry Belafonte in 1956 and later became one of his signature songs. That same year The Tarriers released an alternative version that incorporated the chorus of another Jamaican folk song, "Hill and Gully Rider". The Tarriers version was later recorded by Shirley Bassey.

The song has mento influences, but "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" was commonly classified as an example of the better known calypso music. It is a work song, from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. Daylight has come, the shift is over, and they want their work to be counted up so that they can go home.[citation needed]

The song originated as a Jamaican folk song. It was thought to be sung by Jamaican banana workers, with a repeated melody and refrain (call and response); to each set lyric, the workers made a response. There were numerous versions of lyrics, some likely improvised on the spot by the singers. The song was probably created around the second half of the nineteenth century or the first half of twentieth century, where there was a rise of the banana trade in Jamaica...

From Jimmy Dick ('65) of FL - 08/27/19, 12:24 PM:

When the sea is this calm, it's hard to ponder that a hurricane can be somewhere out there lurking. Don't believe that. The sea has many mysteries and can change suddenly. Enjoy it, but recognize what it is. It is nature and it is very powerful and we can be no match for it.

     Thank you, Jimmy!

From Alton Jones ('66) of FL and NC - 08/26/21, 12:39 AM:

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 08/26/19:

An old farmer won the ten million dollar lottery and was being interviewed. The reporter asked what he was going to do with all the money.

"Oh, I reckon the first thing I'll do is go and pay a few bills."

"And what about the rest?" the reporter continued.

The farmer shrugs. "Well, I guess they'll just have to wait."
