The Wayward Wind

A great wind is blowing, and that gives you
either imagination or a headache.”

- Catherine II, Queen of Russia
(21 Apr 1729 - 06 Nov 1796)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I remember sitting by our Magnavox radio and singing along with Gogi to this when I was a little girl.  Was I really only nine years old??

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SaeWh3h8Fg - The Wayward Wind - Gogi Grant, 1956

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wayward_Wind:

"The Wayward Wind" is a country song written by Stan Lebowsky and Herb Newman.

In 1956 versions were recorded by Gogi Grant, Tex Ritter, and Jimmy Young, of which Grant's was the biggest seller in the United States and Ritter's in the United Kingdom. The song reached #1 on the Cash Box chart, which combined all recorded versions, but must have got most of that popularity from the Gogi Grant version, which reached #1 on the Billboard chart on its own. The song is one of only two songs that were major hits for Grant, the other being "Suddenly There's a Valley".

In 1961 Gogi Grant's recording was reissued and reached Billboard #50 and Cash Box #78. That same year, Patsy Cline made a recording, which did not chart.

In 1963 a new recording was made by Frank Ifield, which reached #1 on the UK charts.

The song made the Billboard country chart in the 1980s in a version by Sylvia, with accompaniment by James Galway.

NEW ON SITE:

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 08/17/14 - "James River Bridge Toll Booth":

This was sent to me by my cousin, Lucy Bedsaul Merritt. Thought it was really neat so I wanted to share it.

Look at all the sand on the road from the beach.  The Toll Plaza should be somewhere in the parking lot of the Crab Shack Restaurant now.  I remember when Mercury Boulevard used to be Military Highway (Norfolk named theirs after Hampton already had one).  It was renamed in honor of the Mercury Space Program (and I suspect the confusion with having two Military Highways in the area) when I was about 9 or 10 years old.

There used to be circles there where Jefferson Avenue and Warwick Boulevard crossed. I think it was a left over design from not having traffic signals.   There was one at the King Street and LaSalle Avenue crossings, too.

Dang, I'm feeling old.....

WOWZERS! Thank you so much, Ruthie! This image is even older than I am! And it's now on one of the oldest pages in our site:

Carol:

Might want to show this to the Typhoon Nation as after viewing this you wonder about continuing to eat catfish bought from your local grocer.

FOLKS ! Be careful with that basa served in restaurants these days

Beautiful Vietnam today - along with the wonderful fishing experience!

You go out to a nice restaurant and order Tilapia, Basa, etc. and here's where it came from!

Think I'll order steak.

Raised, processed, canned, frozen, in Vietnam?

From Buster Vest ('63) of VA - 08/17/14 - "Star Spangled Banner as you have never heard before":

God Bless America---Thank God I am an American

The Star Spangled Banner - "The story of how our national anthem came to be. This is a story every American should hear. It's a little lengthy, but I'm sure it'll be worth your time."

WOWZERS! Thank you so much, Buster! There are those who say that there are errors in the facts of the narration, and by "a little lengthy" that is to say the video is 11-1/2 minutes long, but as Americans it is certainly worth our time to pause and reflect!

For the singing itself, I personally prefer this version:

The Star Spangled Banner - The Texas Children's Choir performs the National Anthem at the AT&T Center, February 24, 2010.

The Wayward Wind

Written by Stanley Lebowsky (26 Nov 1926 – 19 Oct 1986) and Herb Newman

Recorded by Gogi Grant (born Myrtle Audrey Arinsberg, 20 Sept 1924), 1956

The wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

In a lonely shack by a railroad track
He spent his younger days
And I guess the sound of the outward-bound
Made him a slave to his wand'rin ways

And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

Oh, I met him there in a border town
He vowed we'd never part
Though he tried his best to settle down
I'm now alone with a broken heart

And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

The next of kin to the wayward wind
