Long Misty Days

“I don't ask for the meaning of the song of a bird or the rising of the sun
on a misty morning. There they are, and they are beautiful.”

- Pete Hamill
(b. 24 June 1935)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's theme was once again suggested by        my #5 Son, Nathaniel Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '97) of IL, this time on 08/11/12 at 9:52 PM:

I mentioned this song in the car the other day. It's by the guy who was in the group (Procol Harum) that wrote "Whiter Shade of Pale." I hadn't heard this song before watching the film, "Roadie."

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of TX - 08/11/12, 11:24 AM - "recent pics of CPT promotion":

Mom and Dad,

Here are some pics you can share with others from my recent promotion.  I've been waiting a while for this.  From my original agreement with the Army, it should have happened back in February.  But things change, of course.  So when we got the call yesterday am if we wanted to get promoted at the 1600 formation that day, it was definitely something I wanted to do!  And the other guys felt that same way too.  A few others actually decided to wait till their family (who were out of town) could come.  But most of us just 'got it done'!

Now to get on to a new assignment....there are now 3 captains in one battery.  It will be a bit odd to say the least.  Hopefully, I can get pulled up to another assignment soon.  We'll see.  I'll keep you posted of course and will look to call later today.  with love.

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/11/12, 5:16 PM - "         Captain Brent Harty USA":

Hi, Carol and Paul:
You all must be busting with pride over Brent's promotion.
I have been so excited since reading about Brent's promotion to the rank of Captain the in United States Army.
Plus, I am honored that he chose to send me five outstanding photos of the promotion ceremony in an e-mail.
News on Facebook travels fast. It has been one of the ways that I keep in touch with Captain Harty.
Army Strong,

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Thank you, Major Madagan! You are quite correct! We were in a library in Jackson, Missouri when we received the news, and I texted Bethany and asked her how we were going to be able to jump up and run around screaming, "YAHOO!" under those conditions. She said we totally should because it would be funny, but we somehow managed to restrain ourselves. I settled for hauling the library director (who is a distant cousin-in-law himself) over to the computer and showing him Brent's picture on the Go Army page about Officer Candidate School - right up front and looking Army Strong at his graduation:

From Terry Seay ('67) of TN - 08/11/12, 11:23 PM - "Christmas Songwriter Open House Benefit - WO Smith - Call for Songwriter Participation":

As many of you know "Its All About Z Music" has been partnering with WO Smith School of Music in a year long funding event. As part of that partnership Wanda and I have agreed to match all funds collected at our monthly house concerts. Those funds currently exceed $1,000 !!

We are also pleased to announce that this year's event will held at the WO Smith facility on December 15, 2012. The doors will open at 4:00 PM; music starts around 4:30 PM

This is still a covered dish event and a $25 donation will be collected at the door.

This going to be a very special event in that some of the students from WO Smith will perform.

We are calling now for Songwriter / Band / Group Participation...... last year we had 48 songwriters participate and help raise over $4,000....so block your calendar and let me know if you want to play. We are hoping there will be a lot of media coverage for this event.

Every effort will be made to accommodate all who want to participate!

Have a Very Muggy August Christmas!

WOWZERONI! Thanks for letting us know, Terry!

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 08/12/12:

The two inventors of the bungee rope went to Spain to test their invention. They built a 50-foot tower and, once completed, one of the guys stood on the edge of the platform and dived into the air with the rope tied to his feet. The other guy, standing up on the platform, waited until his friend returned up so that he could grab him. The first time his friend sprang up, he tried to grab him but missed and noticed that his head was swollen. The next time, he missed again and again there was a bruise on his head and face.

This time, with much concern, he dived forward to get his partner, pulled him in and asked, "What happened? Is the cord too long?"

His partner replied with his face all bloody, "What is piñata?"

Long Misty Days

Written and recorded by Robin Trower (b. 09 Mar 1945), 1976

Long misty days
Told me they would change their ways
Once in a while will come my way

The thrill is gone
Misty days linger on and on
Once in a while is here to stay

We feed this fire
Lovers in a nursery rhyme
The words belong to you
And the melody was mine

Long misty days
Told me in a million ways
Once in a while will come my way

Oh how the moon
Shining in a lonely room
Weeping willow cry for me

Sing me a song
Simple as the day is long
Our loves are crying to be free

And take the sky
And tell me if the moon is blue
And if it's meant to be
That my melody was you

Long misty days
Told me in a million ways
Once in a while will come my way

Long misty days
Told me they would change the ways
Once in a while is here to stay
