From Malcolm Davis ('65) of VA - 08/11/15 - "Hornbook":

Polly (Norris Davis - '65) is going through some stuff and came across this item.

Definition of Hornbook

noun

1.
a leaf or page containing the alphabet, religious materials, etc., covered with a sheet of transparent horn and fixed in a frame with a handle, formerly used in teaching children to read.
2.
a primer or book of rudiments.

WOWZERS! Thank you, Sweetie-Pies! As a little girl I was always fascinated by the old Colonial hornbooks, so I was excited to see this way cool item even before I checked the inscription!

Unfortunately, being only a big dog and a white cane away from being totally and completely blind now, I wasn't able to completely make out the inscription on the back beyond a few tantalizing words, no matter how much I craned my neck and PhotoShopped it:

"Horn Book ____ made by the F____ ____
________ ____ _____ and C________ M_____ _____
of the Newport News _____ __ ___,
Newport News, Virginia"

ARGHH!!   Could you please transcribe that for me, Dear Malcolm? Thanks again!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 08/11/15:

Joe, a notoriously bad golfer, hit his ball off the first tee and watched as it sliced to the right and disappeared through an open window.

Figuring that was the end of it, he picked another ball out of his bag and played on.

On the eighth hole, a police officer walked up to Joe on the course and said, "Did you hit a golf ball through a window back there?"

Joe answered, "Yes I did."

"Well," said the police officer, "it knocked over a lamp, scaring the dog, which raced out of the house onto the highway. A driver rammed into a brick wall to avoid the dog, sending three people to hospital. And it's all because you sliced the ball."

"Oh my goodness," says Joe, "is there anything I can do?"

"Yes, there is," replied the policeman. "Try keeping your head down and close up your stance a bit."

(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes

Written and Recorded by
Elvis Costello (b. 25 Aug 1954), 1977

Oh I used to be disgusted
and now I try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
you know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain,
that's when I knew that I could not refuse.
And I won't get any older, now the angels wanna wear my red shoes.

I was watching while you're dancing away.
Our love got fractured in the echo and sway.
How come everybody wants to be your friend?
You know that it still hurts me just to say it.

Oh, I know that she's disgusted (oh why's that)
Cause she's feeling so abused. (oh that's too bad)
She gets tired of the lust, (oh I'm so sad)
but it's so hard to refuse.
How can you say that I'm too old,
when the angels have stolen my red shoes.

Oh, I said "I'm so happy, I could die."
She said "Drop dead," then left with another guy.
That's what you get if you go chasing after vengeance.
Ever since you got me punctured this has been my sentence.
Oh I used to be disgusted
and now I try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
you know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
Red shoes, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
