NEWPORT NEWS - Jean Dawson
Harrell Wood, age 88, passed away on August 7, 2015.
She was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the daughter of Samuel and Beulah Harrell. She moved to Newport News in 1935 and after graduating from Newport News High School in 1944, she married the love of her life, Charles Henry Wood Jr.
Survivors include sisters, Peggy Weeks of Kannapolis, North Carolina and Ted and Mabel Safford of Leesburg, Florida.
She leaves four children, Charles Henry Wood III, Jean Elizabeth Wood Gardner, Deborah Ann Wood Pia, and David Morgan Wood.
When diagnosed with
Diabetic Neuropathy 12 years ago, Jean Dawson never gave up. She never
complained, maintaining a brave and cheerful outlook with life. Filled with
compassion and a keen interest in others, Jean made friends easily and
maintained contact with many. As her children grew, she began working outside
the home and maintained two jobs to further her kids' education. Jean was an
avid reader and a tenacious bridge player.
She was also sort of a self-proclaimed NASA Propagandist having worked in contract files during the Apollo Moon Mission from which she retired in 1977.
After Charlie passed away, she traveled the world with beloved friends she had known since high school, to the Pyramids in Egypt, walking the Great Wall in China, Stonehenge, swimming on the Great Barrier Reef, and many more destinations.
Her family would like to thank and honor the management and nursing staff of The Newport for years of tender care they have given our mother.

Abide With Me
Words by Henry F. Lyte, 1847
Music by William H. Monk, 1861
Come not in terrors, as the
King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.
Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
