Bread For My Baby-O

“Good bread is the most fundamentally satisfying of all foods;
and good bread with fresh butter, the greatest of feasts.

-
James Beard
(05 May 1903 - 21 Jan 1985)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

"And now for something completely different."

  From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH - 07/31/10 - "Bless the Barley/Lughnasadh":

Bless the barley, bless the oats, bless both the wheat and rye; bless golden loaf, and brimming cask; without them we would die. Bless the hands that cut the grain, bless bakers, millers too; bless all those who make the loaf, to nourish me and you....

At the beginning of August comes the barley-harvest in Ireland. They are cutting oats in Wales and Scotland and Cornwall about the same time, and wheat in  Brittany a week or two later, and rye in the Norse lands. Bread was indeed the staff of life for our ancestors in most of western Europe and elsewhere in the world, though the grain might vary-- teff, spelt, rice, quinoa, kasha, maize etc-- grain was the source of bread and of beer-- staples throughout most of the world. In Ireland the storm-god Lugh holds the funeral-assembly (Lughnasadh) for his dead foster-mother Tailtiu, at the time of the barley-harvest. For nine days people cut the barley, feast, and hold the funeral-games...traditionally the young people 18 to 27 who have not found a suitable marriage-partner locally travel to Teltown, to look over other eligibles...there are bonfires on the hills, and dances, and and what happens in Teltown DOESN'T stay in Teltown, but travels homeward in the shape of new betrothals (handfastings) and the promise of plenty.
A Greek friend, at this same time, celebrates new grapes and olives and olive oil. All cultures look to the harvest, and the blessings of the High Ones.

May we all reap the best of what we have sown. May our harvests-- first (August), second (September), third and final (October into the start of November), bring to fruition grain and fruit and vegetables and meat, relationships and careers affirmed; blessings offered, accepted, fully received.

Domi

Thank you, Domi, blessings to you and yours, too! Thank you also for the theme of the day (well, HALF of it anyway!)!

For those of y'all who "have joined us in progress," Joe and Megan are our sorta "extra" children.  We encountered them along Life's Way when they were newlyweds and decided to keep them.  Even Megan's mother refers to us as, "the other grandparents".  This means we really have 16 grandchildren now - two in one week!  WHOO-HOO!

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 07/31/10 - "obits":

Hello Carol,

First, let me congratulate you on all your super good news!

Grandson Andrew's (Harty - Collinsville HS, IL - '10 - of IL) career choice. God is better than Guns any day!

Well, um, actually, Linda May, Latter-day Saint missionaries serve for a period of two or two-and-a-half years for young men, or 18 months for young women, and then go on to college, military or whatever other career choices they make.  When Andrew returns, he's planning college, ROTC and the Air Force at the moment.....

Little Kaiya's recovery ( I was so concerned) which looks like God's work too - amen.

   Ditto!

And your
new baby - how delightful! Hope she picks a good name.

   Yes, she really did!

Now -
A few days ago,
Barry Rew (NNHS / Ferguson HS - '65) of VA wrote how the obits were getting him down.
As you know, I also have said this. But since then I've had time to reexamine my opinion on this subject. Yes, I was afraid of dying too. Would I be alone? Would it hurt? Could I be brave? Well, you know, God had a thing or two to say about that but besides that, I went to the internet for some facts.

We are Baby Boomers.
From 1946 to 1964 about 72 MILLION of us came into this world over a period of 17 years. You men were so bored - no TV, you know. We have given the world a lot. Disneyland and the Moon. We have been together thru a lot - polio, air raid drills and hurricanes. And even though THE government thinks we are a pain in the twice spent social security, we are together.

Not even after the Civil War where more men died than all our wars together have so many people been born.

And when we leave, we will not leave behind a ravished Earth like the dust bowl fiasco or a crash like 1929. All of us together were born, lived, and will leave a better planet than all our "after-fathers" because we have loved one another.

The shape the world is in now? Well, we're retired, that's not our ball.  So It would stand to reason that when we leave this world ('cause we're not going to get out alive) it would be like we came over a period of 17 years. Together.  Isn't it nice we have so much company!

There will never be a generation like our again. I'm very proud. And because of people like Carol, we can be proud TOGETHER!

God give you peace, my friend, I am by your side.

Thank you so very much, Linda May!

From Jane Chambers of VA - 07/31/10 - "DRAMATIC WORKSHOP STUDENTS--Were YOU one?":

FYI: Thought you might be interested.

SHOULD YOUR NAME BE ON THIS ATTACHED LIST?

CNC'S Dramatic Workshop, sponsored by Frances Kitchin, existed for two academic years only (to my knowledge): 1964-65 & 1965-66.  Possibly it continued into the 66-67 session (there was no yearbook). The 1968 Trident mentions no drama group at all. Once Frances and Bill Kitchin left CNC (in 67 or 68), there was in fact no student theater until the arrival of young English Instructor Ron Stewart, who revived the drama program beginning in the fall of 1971 (See "On Stage: The CNC Players," in Memories of Christopher Newport College: The First Decade, pages 136-141.)

This attached list is not a complete list. Please contact me if

1. YOUR NAME should be added,

2. You know the name of someone else that should be added, and/or

3. You can help me locate a person listed for whom I have no contact info.

Thanks for your help!

WOWZERS! Thanks, Jane! This is quite interesting - to me, anyway - as I know several of these students! I've added it your your section below for future reference.

   Y'all take a look!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL - 07/31/10 - "Did I read it right ?":

Did I read that sign right?

In an office:
TOILET OUT OF ORDER...... PLEASE USE FLOOR BELOW

In a Laundromat:
AUTOMATIC WASHING MACHINES: PLEASE REMOVE ALL YOUR CLOTHES WHEN THE LIGHT GOES OUT

In a London department store:
BARGAIN BASEMENT UPSTAIRS

In an office:
WOULD THE PERSON WHO TOOK THE STEP LADDER YESTERDAY PLEASE BRING IT BACK OR FURTHER STEPS WILL BE TAKEN

In an office:
AFTER TEA BREAK STAFF SHOULD EMPTY THE TEAPOT AND STAND UPSIDE DOWN ON THE DRAINING BOARD

Outside a secondhand shop:
WE EXCHANGE ANYTHING - BICYCLES, WASHING MACHINES, ETC. WHY NOT BRING YOUR WIFE ALONG AND GET A WONDERFUL BARGAIN?

Notice in health food shop window:
CLOSED DUE TO ILLNESS

Spotted in a safari park:
ELEPHANTS PLEASE STAY IN YOUR CAR

Seen during a conference:
FOR ANYONE WHO HAS CHILDREN AND DOESN'T KNOW IT, THERE IS A DAY CARE ON THE 1ST FLOOR

Notice in a farmer's field:
THE FARMER ALLOWS WALKERS TO CROSS THE FIELD FOR FREE, BUT THE BULL CHARGES.

On a repair shop door:
WE CAN REPAIR ANYTHING. (PLEASE KNOCK HARD ON THE DOOR - THE BELL DOESN'T WORK)

Now that you've smiled at least once, it's your turn to spread the stupidity and send this to someone you want to bring a smile to (maybe even a chuckle).  We all need a good laugh, keep on smiling.

     Thanks, Dools!

FINALLY:
From ArcaMax Jokes - 07/31/10:

Business Name

Some of my friends started a company built around an innovative idea for an online business. A debate broke out about what to name the venture. "We have to call it Imagination," one passionate participant cried out.

Everyone thought the idea over for a minute, and then a voice of reason replied, "Are you sure you want your business card to read 'Imagination, Limited'?"

Bread For My Baby-O

Words by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey

Music: Old English Country Song

Adapted by Terry Kluytmans
, 2002

Oh, this is the way that the farmer goes,
With a heigh-ho, heigh-ho,
Oh, this is the way that the farmer goes,
He ploughs and digs and harrows and sows,
To grow some wheat for my baby,
Some wheat for my baby-o!

Oh, this is the way that the farmer goes,
With a heigh-ho, heigh-ho,
Oh, this is the way that the farmer goes,
His mill wheels turn as little brook flows,
To grind some flour for my baby,
Some flour for my baby-o!

Oh, this is the way that the farmer goes,
With a heigh-ho, heigh-ho,
Oh, this is the way that the farmer goes,
He stirs and kneads and bakes it just so,
To make some bread for my baby,
Some bread for my baby-o!
