08/01/04 - NNHS Newsletter - Marcia Wasserman Lawrence and Carolyn's Mother

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   We have two more batches of sad news today.

Marcia Wasserman Lawrence

HAMPTON - Marcia Wasserman Lawrence, passed away peacefully at her home on July 29, 2004, after a long illness with cancer with family and friends at her bedside. She graduated from Newport News High School Class of 1968. She worked for 10 years at the Virginia National Bank before joining the Verizon staff as an operator. She retired last month after more than 20 years of service with Verizon. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Martin 'Wes' Lawrence; one son, Wesley Lawrence of Beaufort, N.C.; one grandson, Aaron Lawrence of New Bern, N.C.; her mother, Cecelia Wasserman, and a brother, Ellis Wasserman and his wife, Shirley, both of Newport News; one sister, Ilene Dillard of Hayes, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Jane Martinez and her husband, Marty, of St. Charles, Mo., and Emily Needs of San Antonio, Texas; one brother-in-law, Tim Lawrence and his wife, Dawn, of Beaufort, N.C.; and many wonderful family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1, at the W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, in the Garden of Wisdom, Peninsula Memorial Park. At Marcia's request, in lieu of flowers, send all donations to the Aaron W. Lawrence Educational Fund, 1319 Caldwell Drive, Hampton, VA 23666. Arrangements by W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.

   You may have noticed that I do not deal well with death.  I know that I should, but the truth is that I do not. 
I had known a year ago that Marcia was ill.  Apparently I chose to forget it completely, as this took me by complete surprise.

Mildred Bernice Schramm Dailey      
 
NEWPORT NEWS - Mildred Bernice Schramm Dailey, 89, of Newport News, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at her residence. Born June 9, 1915, in Southampton Co., Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry Henton and Lizzie Cotton Schramm, the granddaughter of the late Armenious Gayhardt and Lula Crumpler Schramm and the late James Sephus and Rosa Vaughan Cotton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, W. C. Dailey, Jr., December 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Patricia Dailey Freeman of Newport News; a granddaughter, Jennifer Carolyn Jones of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Eunice Gayhardt Schramm Wolford and her husband, Byron Wolford, of Richmond; and three devoted CNAs, Pat Tanner, Marsha Anim and Renee Jacobs. Mrs. Dailey graduated from Chuckatuck High School and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She retired from Ft. Monroe, HQ TRADOC in 1977. A Service of Celebration of her life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 4700 Huntington Ave., Newport News, on Saturday, July 24, at 11 a.m. with interment at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News. Memorials may be made to the
Riverside Hospice, 11815 Rock Landing Drive, Newport News, VA 23606.
