One Summer Night

“Oh, the summer night
Has a smile of light
And she sits on a sapphire throne.

Bryan Waller Procter (a.k.a. Barry Cornwall)
(21 Nov 1787 - 05 Oct 1874)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Y'all know I'm a big sucker for dreamy old songs such as this .

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT4LJxBBaF0 - One Summer Night - The Danleers, 1958

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Danleers

The Danleers was an American doo-wop group in the 1950s. They were a quintet hailing from Brooklyn, New York. Jimmy Weston was the lead singer, and the group was named after their manager, Danny Webb, who wrote their most famous number, "One Summer Night". The track was originally released on AMP-3 2115, as being by The Dandleers...

Their one big hit single (and their debut single), "One Summer Night" (b/w "Wheelin and A-Dealin'"), reached #4 on the Billboard Black Singles chart, and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1958.[1]

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1.    From the Most Talented Boy in the Class of 1954, Jack Nelson of Northern VA - 07/30/13, 1:04 PM. 2:52 PM, and 6:48 PM - "August 3, 2013 - BIG EVENT":

Dear Classmates,

Bill Campbell ('54 - of VA) sent me the below message this morning...

Warm regards,

Jack Nelson

Dear Jack,

Jerry Harden, who grew up in Newport News but graduated from Hampton High in '54, has organized a sort of get-together of '50s grads from NNHS and HHS and has coaxed Stewart 'Buck' Rodgers, NNHS Class of '52, to provide music.

Jerry should have stayed at NNHS, because this flyer shows that the boy is not good at reading or writing. I told him that Stewart's name was 'Rodgers', not 'Rogers' and even wrote it down for him, yet he had these flyers made up with Stewart's name incorrectly spelled as 'Rogers'.

I have no idea how many people will show up, but the venue is a lovely restored Victorian house in Phoebus, on Mallory Street, less than half a mile off of I-64. I understand that they have fabulous barbecue, but I have not eaten there.

Anyway, it might be nice if you could send this information to the NNHS people on your email list. IN the past, I hate to hear someone say, 'Oh, I would have loved to have come (to anything) if I had only known'. So, in order to prevent that sort of sad situation, I have tried to inform friends about any upcoming performances, and it would be nice if you could help me with this one.

I am getting like the Rolling Stones, in that every time I play in public, I say that this is the last time, but something always pops up to male a liar out of me.

Sincerely,

Bill C.

Jack's note:
YES! This IS short notice but for all of you out of in and out of towners who may be in the Newport News area on August 3, 2013, you can be assured of a good time as Bill Campbell plays a mean guitar, as well as Stewart Rodgers. And, many of the songs (if not most) will be from our era when songs were songs and not just a lot of banging on tin cans.

This may take the place of a NNHS Class of 1954 class reunion for this year as we ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE ONE IN 2013.

Way back in the first part of this year I was asked to obtain a consensus of all those who wished to have a reunion this year (2013). I sent emails to all you folks asking for your input. I submitted the results to the powers that be (there was an ample number of Class of '54 folks who said they would attend if one were held).

After my submission, I requested a response twice via email to the powers that be - not one reply. Not even acknowledging they had received the results of the survey. The last word from one of the powers that be was said to one of our classmates - not to me directly. "...if we wanted to have a class reunion this year that (we) should go for it." I inserted the word "we" to protect the person who told me this but the we meant that person and me - or anybody else who wanted to organize a 2013 Class Reunion. Thus, right now I have the feeling that the 2012 reunion may have been my last. Rudeness and non-responsiveness from people, I do not tolerate.

Notwithstanding the above, I do not consider this event at Victoria Station to be a class reunion, just an informal get-together of people from Newport News and Hampton classes of the 1950's.

Hope to see you there.

I trust this message finds all of you in the best of health and happiness, although I have been informed that a few of you are not experiencing those qualities at this time. For those, I offer my deepest sympathy.

I'm back!

This just in from our old classmate,    Lenny Spivak (see below message). Len lives in Boca Raton, Florida these days and he says he practices his Saxophone nearly everyday, even after all these years. For those who don't know, Len made a career out of music and played with some of the top big bands and smaller groups in our great nation while actively playing (for money). Of course, that was back when big bands and small jazz groups were in. Now, it's how loud you can bang on tin cans, yell, how big your amplifier is, etc. OH! And how ridiculous you can look as an artist.

While I am at it, please pass this to classmates and others you know who went to NNHS/HHS in the 1950's. And, for all you folks who are living alone these days, just show up and join a table of others in the same situation. Nobody is going to give a &$?* at our age - so don't be embarrassed to do so. You will get to see a lot of old friends this way.

Jack Nelson

I played a few gigs with Stuart Rodgers around 1962-63 and he was a good guitar player. If I was there I'd like to play with him again. Give my regards to the old folks.

--- Lenny.

A number of classmates could not open the attachment to the earlier subject announcement. Thus, I have copied it below and dressed it up a little for email.

Sorry for the short notice; however, keep in mind I am just the messenger - not the producer.

Hope this helps.

UPDATE:

From Malcolm Davis ('65) of VA - 07/30/13 - "    Jamey (Douglas) Bacon ('66 - of VA) Mission Project Update: Bricking the driveway is planned for next Thursday and Friday":

Excerpt from our church bulletin for Sunday, July 28:

THANK YOU NOTES from…

Malcolm Davis - My thanks to the Youth Mission Team for spending the day working at Jamey Bacon's home on Tuesday this week. They scraped, painted, power washed, replaced a back door, removed a dead tree, cleaned a gutter, repaired window sills, replaced glass panes, located an underground drainage pipe, visited with Jamey and had lunch with her. They were a delight to Jamey who enjoys visitors and is always grateful for a helping hand. Upkeep of a home is difficult for the handicapped and this one day of service surely made a difference to her home and yard.

Tuesday, July 23, 2013 - Hilton Village

WOWZERONI-RINI! Such fabulous news! Thank you so much for all your valiant efforts in arranging all of this for Jamey, Malcolm!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/30/13 - "Good News":

Hi, Carol:

Reading your online Newsletter to the TYPHOON Nation today brought me great joy to see that the surgeon successfully removed the cancerous cells from
Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of NC). That was touchy surgery he endured.

Hope you get favorable results from your test, and get over the congestion soon.

Thanks for updating the Famous Marine page to feature
SSgt Bernice Frankel USMC (AKA:   Bea Arthur) in uniform. Finding that photo image caused me to get really excited for you, knowing how important it is for you to have the individuals posted in the Uniform of the Day. Glad to contribute.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Thanks so very much, Sweet Adonis - for everything!

STONE

TWO FRIENDS WERE WALKING THROUGH THE DESERT.
DURING SOME POINT OF THE JOURNEY, THEY HAD AN
ARGUMENT; AND ONE FRIEND SLAPPED THE OTHER ONE IN THE FACE.

THE ONE WHO GOT SLAPPED WAS HURT, BUT WITHOUT
SAYING ANYTHING, WROTE IN THE SAND,

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.

THEY KEPT ON WALKING, UNTIL THEY FOUND AN OASIS,
WHERE THEY DECIDED TO TAKE A BATH .

THE ONE WHO HAD BEEN SLAPPED GOT STUCK IN THE
MIRE AND STARTED DROWNING, BUT THE FRIEND SAVED HIM.

AFTER HE RECOVERED FROM THE NEAR DROWNING,
HE WROTE ON A STONE:

'TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE'

THE FRIEND WHO HAD SLAPPED AND SAVED HIS BEST FRIEND ASKED HIM,
'AFTER I HURT YOU, YOU WROTE IN THE SAND AND NOW, YOU WRITE ON A STONE, WHY?'

THE FRIEND REPLIED, 'WHEN SOMEONE HURTS US
WE SHOULD WRITE IT DOWN IN SAND, WHERE
WINDS OF FORGIVENESS CAN ERASE IT AWAY.

'BUT, WHEN SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING GOOD FOR US,
WE MUST ENGRAVE IT IN STONE WHERE NO WIND CAN EVER ERASE IT.'

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

THEY SAY IT TAKES A MINUTE TO FIND A SPECIAL PERSON,

AN HOUR TO APPRECIATE THEM,

A DAY TO LOVE THEM,

BUT THEN, AN ENTIRE LIFE TO FORGET THEM.

SEND THIS TO THE PEOPLE YOU'LL NEVER FORGET.

I JUST DID..

IF YOU DON'T SEND IT TO ANYONE, IT MEANS YOU'RE IN A HURRY AND THAT YOU'VE FORGOTTEN YOUR FRIENDS.

TAKE THE TIME TO LIVE!

DO NOT VALUE THE THINGS YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE, BUT VALUE WHO YOU HAVE KNOWN IN YOUR LIFE!

AND IF I HAPPEN TO GET IT BACK, THEN I KNOW MY PLACE IN YOUR LIFE.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

   Thanks so much, Jimmy!

Norfolk's Granby Theater in foreclosure, to be sold

NORFOLK

The Granby Theater property in downtown Norfolk has gone into foreclosure and is scheduled to be sold at an auction next week, according to a notice in The Virginian-Pilot.

But the owner of the buildings at 421, 423 and 425 Granby St. said Monday he expects to continue discussions with the lender and reach a resolution before the sale, scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug 7. "We don't plan on having an auction that Wednesday," said Bobby Wright, principal investor in 421 Granby LLC.

He said he is trying to transfer the loan from Southern Bank and Trust Co., which took over the holdings of Bank of the Commonwealth when it failed in late 2011 and has pursued delinquent debtors for the past year to recoup losses.

Granby Theater is doing fine financially, Wright said, though he declined to discuss the status of his loan payments. He just invested in resanding the wood floors and making other improvements in the building, he said.

"We're clearly not banking on going anywhere," he said. "We're not going down the tubes."

One Summer Night

Written by Danny Webb

Recorded by The Danleers, 1958

One summer night, we fell in love
one summer night, I held you tight
you and I, under the moon of love, moon of love

One summer night, I kissed your lips
one summer night, I held you close
you and I, under the moon of love

You kissed me oh, so tenderly
and I knew this was love
and I as held you, oh so close
I knew no one could ever take your place, ohhhh

One summer night, we fell in love
one summer night, I held you tight
you and I, under the moon of love, moon of love
