My Foolish Heart

I watched my foolish heart expand
In the lazy glow of benevolence,
O'er the various modes of man's belief.

HEALTH UPDATES:

     From Me ('65) of IL - 07/25/10 - "    Kaiya":

We heard back from our daughter-in-law,   Kim (Woods Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL / Richard Milburn Academy, FL - '03 - of IL), about our almost ten-month-old granddaughter, Kaiya.

They spent a total of over seven hours in two different hospital emergency rooms (okay, technically, one was more of an urgent care unit) waiting to be seen.  The second one finally ran a strep throat test.  Upon finding it to be negative, they told her her daughter was sick.  Well, DUH! The good news is that her fever broke (for a while, anyway) at about the same time your prayers began.  On Sunday Kaiya's appetite returned, and she rested much more comfortably.  Kim was planning to take her to Springfield today where hopefully she will find better answers.

Thanks so much for your prayers; they were very much appreciated by us all!

REUNION ALERTS:

      From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 05/11/10 - "Class of 1965's 45-Year Reunion":

The NNHS Class of 1965 will hold its 45-Year Reunion on Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2010 - which is OPEN to all classes!

Friday evening we will meet at R.J.'s Restaurant and Sports Bar. The only cost will be what you choose to eat and drink. The company will be priceless.

Saturday will be spent at Newport News Park. We've reserved a group shelter that can seat 150 people with sufficient cover to take care of any weather concerns. If you made it to the 55th Birthday Party you'll recall it was held at the Park in one of the smaller shelters. The facility we're using this time is a new addition and will give us lots of flexibility to meet and reminisce. The cost of this event is $15.00 per person through August 31, 2010. After that date the cost will be $20.00 per person. The charge for Saturday will cover your food and beverages.

OLDIES-NEWBIES:

1.   Barry Rew (NNHS / Ferguson HS - '65) of VA - 07/18/10 (but lost in cyber-space for a week) - "Mailing List":

Hi Carol,

I dropped out for a while but can you put me back on? Reading a year's worth takes a while. Saw where you moved to Illinois. Must give you a good feeling being so close to Nauvoo. I know it would me.

Thanks
Barry Rew

Hey, Barry! I wondered why I hadn't heard from you in so long - welcome back!

I saw your mail just as we were running out the door to help our oldest grandson celebrate a big milestone in his life.      Andrew Harty (Collinsville HS, IL - '10) of IL will turn 19 in two months, and is submitting his paper work to serve as a full-time LDS missionary.  We went to see his father,          my #1 Son, Lewis Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '89) of IL, confer the Melchizedek Priesthood upon him and ordain him to the office of an Elder.

I was spluttering over your Nauvoo reference to the extent that I didn't notice your note had been tied up somewhere in cyber-space for a whole week..... Then when we got home, it had disappeared altogether! (?!?)  At great length I found it, and have you safely on my mailing list once more:

From Me ('65) of IL - 07/13/10 - "My Anniversary Gift to You (continued from Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday)":

I decided to actually work on the site itself and do some long overdue scanning.  As a result, these pages are either entirely new or newly fleshed-out with images:

Why, you may well wonder, did I concentrate solely on the Class of 1967??  That's because         David Whitley ('67) of VA graciously loaned me his 1967 Anchor back in the Fall of 2006 and it's high time to return it to him!

   Thanks again, Gorgeous!

NOTE: I had planned to finish several more sections, but this is taking even longer (and making me even nutzier!) than I had anticipated, so I'll be working on this for the next few days.

From Me ('65) of IL - 07/26/10 - "An Old Image":

During World War II, this image was taken of my first cousin   Clarke's (Booth - Wakefield HS - '57 - of FL) Fifth Birthday Party, and sent overseas to       my daddy, the late Robert Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25).  The smiling, happy, chubby children was were in such contrast to the poor, sad starving children of Europe, that the men passed the image around and around the camp. So touched were these strong soldiers by the sight that often tears flowed freely.  More copies were requested and sent.  They, too, soon became frayed with wear.

I thought you'd like to see the picture which made such an impact on these brave soldiers of Virginia's 29th Division.

      From Mickey Marcella ('54) of VA - 07/25/10 - " Harlan Hott":

Hi, Carol,

Thanks so much for showing Harlan Hott's video of bowl turning.  He generally comes down to NN at the Methodist church in Hilton Village on Main Street in the fall.  I have purchased some of his beautiful works.

It's just a thrill to be with a guy like Coach Hott and his family.  His craftsmanship is just outstanding.  If you are looking for some wonderful Christmas gifts at a very good price from a great artist, don't miss his show.  You would have to ask him when he comes to NN generally in the fall for those who would like to come.

I would just like to take this time to thank Coach Hott for beating Hampton High School our last high school team at NN.  He and Coach Laycock did a great job.  Also, I had the privilege of playing with Coach Hott and  Coach Charlie Woollum on our WVEC Basketball team.  You will never meet two better coaches and men than Coach Hott and Coach Woollum.  We love them very much and God speed.

Mickey Marcella  Class of '54.

Thanks, Mickey, but all I did was post it; the good Captain found it for us!

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 07/25/10 - "RING OF FREEDOM":

Carol,

I just got this e-mail and I feel everyone should see it.

I do not care what you think of
Ollie North, personally, just listen to his speech and see if you can avoid a tear, or the feeling of such pride in our servicemen and women that protect us today.

Jerry Blanchard (Class of 62) of Va.

A must See Video ... Ending is fabulous!

I am now passing this on for you to watch.  It’s not enjoyable, it is riveting!  When you are done pass it on too, I think it’s important...  If you are a vet, I say, Welcome home, brother.

FINALLY:
From ArcaMax Jokes - 07/25/10:

It Might Be the Light

Deep In the back woods, a hillbilly's wife went into labor in the middle of the night, and the doctor was called out to assist in the delivery. As there was no electricity, the doctor handed the father-to-be a lantern and said, "Here. You hold this high so I can see what I am doing."

Soon, a baby boy was brought into the world.

"Whoa there," said the doctor, "Don't be in such a rush to put that lantern down. I think there's another one coming."

Sure enough, within minutes he had delivered a baby girl. "Hold that lantern up, don't set it down there's another one!" said the doctor.

Within a few minutes he had delivered a third baby.

"No, don't be in a hurry to put down that lantern, it seems there's yet another one coming!" cried the doctor.

The
hillbilly scratched his head in bewilderment, and asked the doctor, "You reckon it might be the light that's attractin' 'em?"

Music by Victor Young (08 Aug 1899 or 1900 – 10 Nov 1956)

Words by Ned Washington (15 Aug 1901 – 20 Dec 1976), 1949

The night is like a lovely tune, beware my foolish heart!
How white the ever constant moon, take care, my foolish heart!
There's a line between love and fascination,
That's hard to see on an evening such as this,
For they give the very same sensation.
When you are lost in the passion of a kiss.
Your lips are much too close to mine, beware my foolish heart!
But should our eager lips combine, then let the fire start.
For this time it isn't fascination, or a dream that will fade and fall apart,
It's love this time, it's love, my foolish heart!
