CHIEF ASSESSOR OF NEWPORT NEWS, 1959-1983
Friends and Schoolmates,
There is more sad news to report today. Harold Gray, Class of June 1949, and Chief Assessor for the City of Newport News from 1959 to 1983, passed away at his home in Newport News on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the age of 87.
From The Daily Press - 07/25/17:
NEWPORT NEWS - John
Harold Gray, 87, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend, died
July 23, 2017 at his home in Newport News.
He was born May 29, 1930 to Bea and Earl Gray of Newport News, the youngest of one sister and two brothers.
He graduated from Newport News High School and Randolph Macon College in Ashland, VA, playing his favorite game of football throughout.
He married Nellie Wise in his senior year of college and after graduation, started working for The State Department of Taxation, which led to his lifetime career of Real Estate Assessing and Appraisal. He was appointed Chief Assessor for Newport News in 1959 and served until 1983.
After retiring from the city, Harold started his own Appraisal Service,
at which he worked until 1995. During that time, he helped his daughter Kathy
and his son, Scott work and train as appraisers.
Mr. Gray served as President of the Hampton Roads Chapter 117 Society of Real Estate Appraisers and was a member of the Virginia International Association of Assessing Officers from 1956 to 1983.
Harold and Nellie would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on July 26, 2017. They both have always felt that their marriage, their six children, extended family, and wonderful friends have been their best and happiest blessings.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nellie; their children, John and wife, Judi Gray of Roanoke, VA; Ellen and husband, Marc Gilbert of Birmingham, AL; Linda and husband, Fred Melby of Richmond, VA; Kathy and husband, Terry Bernardi of Yorktown, VA; and Scott and wife, Wendy Gray of Newport News; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and their much loved dog, Sadie.
Their beloved son, Michael, died in 1988.
Harold was greatly loved and admired by his family and friends. He will be forever missed and cherished. We want to thank the Visiting Angels and Riverside Hospice for the superb care they gave at the end of his life.
A graveside service will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park, Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at 12:00 p.m., with Chaplain Matt McCauly officiating. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, our family requests donations in his name to a
favorite charity, the Alzheimer's Association, or the ASPCA.

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
Words by Walter C. Smith, 1876
Music (St. Denio) by John Roberts, 1839
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise.
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.
To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee.
Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
But of all Thy rich graces this grace, Lord, impart
Take the veil from our faces, the vile from our heart.
All laud we would render; O help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee,
And so let Thy glory, Almighty, impart,
Through Christ in His story, Thy Christ to the heart.
