Mormon Pioneer Day

1847 Plus 170 Years

“It is not enough to study or reenact the accomplishments of our pioneers. We need to identify the great, eternal principles they applied to achieve all they achieved for our benefit and then apply those principles to the challenges of our day. In that way we honor their pioneering efforts, and we also reaffirm our heritage and strengthen its capacity to bless our own posterity and those millions of our Heavenly Father's children who have yet to hear and accept the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are all pioneers in doing so.”

- Dallin H. Oaks, Following the Pioneers, Ensign, Nov. 1997, p.72
(b. 12 Aug 1932)

450 YEARS AGO TODAY:

July 24, 1567 - Mary, Queen of Scots, was forced to abdicate and was replaced by her 1-year-old son James VI.

THIS DAY IN WWII:

July 24, 1941 - Japan invaded China by moving through Southeast Asia, an area that France had long occupied. France had "agreed" to the occupation under Petain's puppet government.

July 24, 1943 -
Operation Gomorrah began: The operation consisted of repeated bombing raids against Hamburg's industrial and munitions plants. British and Canadian aeroplanes bombed Hamburg by night, those of the Americans by day. By the end of the operation in November, 9,000 tons of explosives had killed more than 30,000 people and destroyed 280,000 buildings.

July 24, 1948 -
Soviet occupation forces in Germany blockaded West Berlin. The U.S.-British airlift began the following day.

THIS DAY IN 1967:

Monday, July 24, 1967 - It was Mormon Pioneer Day then, too - 1847 plus 120 Years!

Monday, July 24, 1967 - During an official state visit to Canada, French President Charles de Gaulle declared to a crowd of over 100,000 in Montreal: Vive le Québec libre! ("Long live free Quebec!"); the statement angered the Canadian government and many Anglophone Canadians.

From My Friend, Susan, of NC
- 07/24/15:

“The foremost quality of our pioneers was faith. With faith in God, they did what every pioneer does—they stepped forward into the unknown: a new religion, a new land, a new way of doing things. With faith in their leaders and in one another, they stood fast against formidable opposition. When their leader said, 'This is the right place,' they trusted, and they stayed. When other leaders said, 'Do it this way,' they followed in faith.”

- Dallin H. Oaks, October 1997

Jardine's Melting Pot of Pioneer Recipes - "Pioneer women who had to decide what few precious things to carry across the plains surely made one choice in common—their own individual collection of “receipts,” as recipes were then called. For them, these were reminders of a security left behind and a hope for the abundance of the future. In the interim, they simply did what they had to do to keep their families alive..." Come, Come, Ye Saints

"This hymn text was written by William Clayton, who was inspired by the existing hymn 'All Is Well' and his experiences traveling to Utah as one of the Mormon Pioneers. They, the early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gathered from around the world and walked across the American plains to find a new home in the West where they could live their religion without persecution. They settled and colonized much of what is now the state of Utah and although the bitter persecution of the past has, for the most part, been replaced with understanding and respect, for members of the Church throughout the world the hymn 'Come, Come Ye Saints' continues to represent their heritage of faith and sacrifice."

Words by William Clayton, April 15, 1846
(1814 - 04 Dec 1879)

Music: English Folk Song

Come, come, ye Saints, no toil or labor fear;
But with joy wend your way.
Though hard to you this journey may appear,
Grace shall be as your day.
'Tis better far for us to strive
Our useless cares from us to drive;
Do this and joy your hearts will swell —
All is well! All is well!

Why should we mourn or think our lot is hard?
'Tis not so; all is right.
Why should we think to earn a great reward
If we now shun the fight?
Gird up your loins; fresh courage take.
Our God will never us forsake;
And soon we'll have this tale to tell —
All is well! All is well!

We'll find the place which God for us prepared,
Far away in the West.
Where none shall come to hurt or make afraid;
There the Saints will be blessed.
We'll make the air with music ring,
Shout praises to our God and King;
Above the rest these words we'll tell —
All is well! All is well!

And should we die before our journey's through,
Happy day! All is well!
We then are free from toil and sorrow, too;
With the just we shall dwell!
But if our lives are spared again
To see the Saints their rest obtain;
Oh, how we'll make this chorus swell —
All is well! All is well!
