Mormon Pioneer Day
1847 Plus 163 Years
“The foremost quality of our pioneers was faith. With faith in God, they did what every pioneer does—they stepped forward into the unknown: a new religion, a new land, a new way of doing things. With faith in their leaders and in one another, they stood fast against formidable opposition. When their leader said, 'This is the right place,' they trusted, and they stayed. When other leaders said, 'Do it this way,' they followed in faith.”
- Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, “Following the Pioneers,” Ensign, Nov. 1997, p. 72

From Me ('65) of IL - 07/24/10, 6:00 PM - " Kaiya":
We just heard from our daughter-in-law, Kim (Woods Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL / Richard Milburn Academy, FL - '03 - of IL), that our almost ten-month-old granddaughter, Kaiya, is in the hospital emergency room waiting to be seen. She has a fever of 103, but is otherwise free of symptoms, other than she won't eat or sleep. Babies are scary people. Your prayers on her behalf would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 05/11/10 - "Class of 1965's 45-Year Reunion":
The NNHS Class of 1965 will hold its 45-Year Reunion on Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2010 - which is OPEN to all classes!
Friday evening we will meet at R.J.'s Restaurant and Sports Bar. The only cost will be what you choose to eat and drink. The company will be priceless.
will be spent at Newport News Park. We've reserved a group shelter that can seat
150 people with sufficient cover to take care of any weather concerns. If you
made it to the 55th Birthday Party you'll recall it was held at the Park in one
of the smaller shelters. The facility we're using this time is a new addition
and will give us lots of flexibility to meet and reminisce. The cost of this
event is $15.00 per person through August 31, 2010. After that date the cost
will be $20.00 per person. The charge for Saturday will cover your food and

Janey Roane Harper ('57)!
Happy Birthday this week to:

TODAY IN WWII:
|July 24, 1941 - Japan invaded China by moving through
Southeast Asia, an area that France had long occupied. France had
"agreed" to the occupation under Petain's puppet government.
July 24, 1943 - Operation Gomorrah began: The operation consisted of repeated bombing raids against Hamburg's industrial and munitions plants. British and Canadian aeroplanes bombed Hamburg by night, those of the Americans by day. By the end of the operation in November, 9,000 tons of explosives had killed more than 30,000 people and destroyed 280,000 buildings.
July 24, 1948 - Soviet occupation forces in Germany blockaded West Berlin. The U.S.-British airlift began the following day.
TODAY IN 1965:
From Me ('65) of IL - 07/13/10 - "My Anniversary Gift to You (continued from Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday)":
I decided to actually work on the site itself and do some long overdue scanning. As a result, these pages are either entirely new or newly fleshed-out with images:
http://www.nnhs65.com/teach-Abbitt.html- brand new page!
http://www.nnhs65.com/teach-Carolyn-Cline.html - brand new page!
http://www.nnhs65.com/teach-Doyle.html - brand new page!
http://www.nnhs65.com/teach-Edison.html - brand new page!
Why, you may well wonder, did I concentrate solely on the Class of 1967?? That's because David Whitley ('67) of VA graciously loaned me his 1967 Anchor back in the Fall of 2006 and it's high time to return it to him!
Thanks again, Gorgeous!
NOTE: I had planned to finish several more sections, but this is taking even longer (and making me even nutzier!) than I had anticipated, so I'll be working on this for the next few days.
From Chuck Jones ('66) of Northern VA -07/22/10 - "SPD":
I just took a look at the announcement for the Tailgate Party and I followed the link to the SPD page. I noticed that one brother was not on the site, George Herndon class of '67.
Thanks, Chuck! I've fixed that now:
From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 07/23/10 - "THIS BEAR CLIP IS GREAT!!!":
The little bear adventure!
“I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.”
| This is just
amazing, David! I must say I
love the scared little baby voice of the poor little baby bear!
Thanks again, Gorgeous!
From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX - 07/24/10 - "Payne Genealogy":
Well, Cousin Glenn, I knew you
had a Payne line, but I didn't realize that Payne was your
mama's maiden name! The
relationship is much closer than I had supposed.
As you can see from these pedigree charts, my own mama - whose middle name was also Elizabeth! - was a seventh generation North Carolinian on her mother's side.
Thanks, Cousin Glenn!
From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 07/23/10 - "Cat enjoying attention. [VIDEO]":
From Jane Chambers of VA - 07/01/09 AND 02/07/10 - "CNC BOOK BROCHURE & AD" AND 61-62 DECADERS ADDENDA:
Contact Dr. Chambers at email@example.com.
My job is in the Aerospace Industry, and it's always been a challenge to explain just what kind of work I do.
At one gathering, I tried several unsuccessful attempted explanations before deciding to be as generic as possible. When the subject came up while I was talking with a group of guys, I replied simply, "Defense Contractor."
The men nodded, and as the conversation went on, I silently declared victory to myself. Then, one of them turned to me and asked, "So, what do you put up mainly? Chain-link?"

Come, Come, Ye Saints
"This hymn text was written by William Clayton, who was inspired by the existing hymn 'All Is Well' and his experiences traveling to Utah as one of the Mormon Pioneers. They, the early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gathered from around the world and walked across the American plains to find a new home in the West where they could live their religion without persecution. They settled and colonized much of what is now the state of Utah and although the bitter persecution of the past has, for the most part, been replaced with understanding and respect, for members of the Church throughout the world the hymn 'Come, Come Ye Saints' continues to represent their heritage of faith and sacrifice."
