REUNION ALERTS:

      From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 05/11/10 - "Class of 1965's 45-Year Reunion":

The NNHS Class of 1965 will hold its 45-Year Reunion on Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2010 - which is OPEN to all classes!

Friday evening we will meet at R.J.'s Restaurant and Sports Bar. The only cost will be what you choose to eat and drink. The company will be priceless.

Saturday will be spent at Newport News Park. We've reserved a group shelter that can seat 150 people with sufficient cover to take care of any weather concerns. If you made it to the 55th Birthday Party you'll recall it was held at the Park in one of the smaller shelters. The facility we're using this time is a new addition and will give us lots of flexibility to meet and reminisce. The cost of this event is $15.00 per person through August 31, 2010. After that date the cost will be $20.00 per person. The charge for Saturday will cover your food and beverages.

Ever wonder what Coach Hott is doing these days?

Have a look here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8ng4o_natural-edge-bowl-part-1_lifestyle

A word of caution; The video has a commercial intro with loud volume. Also, the video file did not download
smoothly to my computer, but played, paused, loaded, played a little, paused and downloaded some more.

WOWZERS! And how on earth -  when there was yet no evidence of it - did you know I was beginning to work on the Teacher section, Captain?!? Oh, yes, I forgot - you're magic!

Thank you so much, David! Here's another brand new page for which you're responsible:

http://nnhs65.com/SITE-MAP.html

     http://www.nnhs65.com/faculty.html

          http://www.nnhs65.com/teachers.html

               http://www.nnhs65.com/teach-Hott.html - brand new page!

From Me ('65) of IL - 07/13/10 - "My Anniversary Gift to You (continued from Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday)":

I decided to actually work on the site itself and do some long overdue scanning.  As a result, these pages are either entirely new or newly fleshed-out with images:

http://nnhs65.com/SITE-MAP.html

     http://www.nnhs65.com/faculty.html

          http://www.nnhs65.com/teachers.html

               http://www.nnhs65.com/teach-Formichelli.html - brand new page!

               http://www.nnhs65.com/teach-Fowler.html - brand new page!

Why, you may well wonder, did I concentrate solely on the Class of 1967??  That's because         David Whitley ('67) of VA graciously loaned me his 1967 Anchor back in the Fall of 2006 and it's high time to return it to him!

   Thanks again, Gorgeous!

NOTE: I had planned to finish several more sections, but this is taking even longer (and making me even nutzier!) than I had anticipated, so I'll be working on this for the next few days.

From Sydney Dearing ('56) of TN - 07/21/10 - "NNHS Cheers, etc.":

Carol,

In the July 18th newsletter     Glenn Dye ('60) of TX asked about some of the cheers we used to do at ball games and pep rallies. I remember two that were not listed in   Susan Whitcomb Harlin's ('72 - of TX) list. The first was Two bits, four bits, six bits a dollar, all for Newport stand up and holler. Then we would jump up and scream like crazy. Then there was one that was only used for games with arch-rival Hampton High. It went like this:  Crush the Crabbers, Crush the Crabbers, Crush the Crabbers rah! There may have been a second line to this cheer but to the best of my recollection, this one line was simply repeated over and over again.

Of course then the Hampton student body would respond with their own cheer: You can't crush a crab, you can't crush a crab, you can fight and fight with all your might but you can't crush a crab! Unfortunately during the annual Turkey Day Classic, they were usually right. In the 1951/52 school year (my first year at NNHS), we came into the game with an impressive 7-2 record but HHS beat us 48-0 and ruined a pretty good season. Actually, they beat us every year I was at NNHS except one and that ended in a tie. But we did make up for it in basketball.

Sydney

Thanks so much, Sydney - I remember them both! And to help us all remember them, they are now posted at the bottom of the Cheerleaders page - along with some others!

From Carol Anne Comer Cutler ('70) of VA - 07/21/10 - "Wasps":

Something about those bees & wasps this year.  I got stung about three weeks ago by an Eastern Yellow Jacket.  I was taking a hummingbird feeder apart to wash, & one came out and stung me on the left thumb. Hurt like nothing I had ever felt before.  Burning & then itching.  Long story shortened....I ended up at Urgent Care because my left hand looked like someone had blown it up with an air hose.  Got stung again last night on the left leg, but so far, so good!!  They are aggressive little devils.

YOWZERONI! I hope you're feeling better now, Carol!   Do be careful!

From My Cousin, Cheryl White Wilson (John Marshall HS - '64) of VA - 07/20/10 - "Tussing Elementary, Colonial Heights, VA":

Greetings,

This is where my grandson, Steven, will attend school this year!

Love,

Cheryl

This is absolutely grrrrrr8!

If you want to make your day, turn your speakers on and listen to this song - written by a teacher and sung by 3rd graders - it gave me chills.....

After all the bad press over a few teachers who stepped out of line teaching songs to our children, this one is one you will be so proud to hear.  At the end of the song you can order the sheet music.

Awesome.  I hope this sweeps our country and gets sung in all our schools.  The music teacher wrote the song and had all the third graders sing.  Enjoy -- great message.

From the third graders of Tussing Elementary, Colonial Heights, Virginia.

http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=5pfBUUZNbFM

WOWZERS! Thank you, Cheryl! We've run this awesome video a couple of times ("prolly" while you were away in "New Yawk City"), but I didn't realize it all happened at what would become Steven's school!

From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 07/21/10 - "THE SIGN":

I can't imagine not being able to see this beautiful world and people in it.

I believe that you’re going to like this one…

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.

That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning?  What did you write?"

The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way. I wrote: 'Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it.' "

Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile.

Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear. For it is written:
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, lean not to your own understanding...in all ways acknowledge the LORD and the LORD will make your path straight!!!" Proverbs 3:5-6

The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling…And even more beautiful, is knowing that you are the reason behind it!!! For it is written:
"Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10
If you appreciate this message, please share. You may touch someone's heart today and forever.

Thank you so much, Dearest Judy!

FINALLY:

From
ArcaMax
Jokes - 07/21/10:

Marriage Problems

A man and woman were having marriage problems, and decided to end their union after a very short time together. After a most brief attempt to reconcile, the couple went to court to finalize their break-up.

The judge asked the husband, "What has brought you to this point, where you are not able to keep this marriage together?"

The husband said, "In the six weeks we've been together, we haven't been able to agree on one thing."

The wife said, "Seven weeks."
