Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's Newsletter is prompted by the "lovely" weather we're having here in the St. Louis area. Perhaps it's raining where you are, too.
BONUS #1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQstQST1GiM - Rhythm of the Rain - The Cascades
BONUS #2 - http://www.rhythmoftherain.com/ - SURPRISE!
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_of_the_Rain:
"Rhythm of the Rain" is a song performed by The Cascades, released in November 1962. It was written by Cascades band member John Claude Gummoe. It rose to #3 on the US pop charts on March 9, 1963, and it spent two weeks at #1 on the US "Easy listening" chart [1]. The song was also a Top 5 hit in the United Kingdom and a #1 single in Ireland. In 1999, BMI listed the song as the ninth most performed song on radio/TV in the 20th century.[2]
The Cascades' recording was used in the soundtrack of the 1979 film Quadrophenia and included in its soundtrack album.
REUNION ALERTS:
From Dave Arnold
('65) of VA - 05/11/10 - "Class of 1965's 45-Year Reunion":
The NNHS Class of 1965 will hold its 45-Year Reunion on Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2010 - which is OPEN to all classes!
Friday evening we will meet at R.J.'s Restaurant and Sports Bar. The only cost will be what you choose to eat and drink. The company will be priceless.
Saturday
will be spent at Newport News Park. We've reserved a group shelter that can seat
150 people with sufficient cover to take care of any weather concerns. If you
made it to the 55th Birthday Party you'll recall it was held at the Park in one
of the smaller shelters. The facility we're using this time is a new addition
and will give us lots of flexibility to meet and reminisce. The cost of this
event is $15.00 per person through August 31, 2010. After that date the cost
will be $20.00 per person. The charge for Saturday will cover your food and
beverages.

I decided to actually work on the site itself and do some long overdue scanning. As a result, these pages are either entirely new or newly fleshed-out with images:

http://www.nnhs65.com/band.html
http://www.nnhs65.com/band-67.html - brand new page!
Why, you may well wonder, did I
concentrate solely on the Class of 1967?? That's because
David Whitley ('67) of VA
graciously loaned me his 1967 Anchor back in the Fall of 2006 and it's
high time to return it to him!
Thanks again,
Gorgeous!
NOTE: I had planned to finish several more sections, but this is taking even longer (and making me even nutzier!) than I had anticipated, so I'll be working on this for the next few days.
From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 07/19/10 - "... Contest...":
Hi,
I see I owe some email, but have a very busy day. It's been one trip of a
weekend with car problems, as I had to make a 4 hour trip, little unexpectants
and my computer went on the blink. I'm not sure if it was a viral attack or my
fur babies, but nothing would access. Upon calling my server they informed me my
computer sounded shot. After throwing a small adult hissy fit, then praying to
God, the angels and anyone that cared to listen, I noticed all my icons for all
Microsoft programs had been disabled. Checking to enable the entire panel
started everything working again. I share that in case that ever happens to one
of you. Will attempt to give responses late tonight or tomorrow and sorry for
the delay.
Have a grrreat day,
Shari

I think I included this before, but this is on a friend's page and I listened to
it in full ..such a nice and broad ranged voice this kid has!

The Washington Post had a
contest wherein participants were asked to tell the younger generation how much
harder they had it "in the old days." Winners, runners-up, and honorable
mentions are listed below.
Second Runner-Up:
In my day, we couldn't afford shoes, so we went barefoot. In winter, we had to
wrap our feet with barbed wire for traction.
First Runner-Up:
In my day, we didn't have MTV or in-line skates, or any of that stuff. No, it
was 45s and regular old metal-wheeled roller skates, and the 45s always skipped,
so to get them to play right you'd weigh the needle down with something like
quarters, which we never had because our allowances were way too small, so we'd
use our skate keys instead and end up forgetting they were taped to the record
player arm so that we couldn't adjust our skates, which didn't really matter
because those crummy metal wheels would kill you if you hit a pebble anyway, and
in those days roads had real pebbles on them, not like today.
And the winner:
In my day, we didn't have rocks. We had to go down to the creek and wash our
clothes by beating them with our heads.
Honorable Mentions:
In my day, we didn't have fancy health-food restaurants. Every day we ate lots
of easily recognizable animal parts, along with potatoes.
In my day, we didn't have hand-held calculators. We had to do addition on our
fingers. To subtract, we had to have some fingers amputated.
In my day, we didn't get that disembodied, slightly ticked-off voice saying
'Doors closing.' We got on the train, the doors closed, and if your hand was
sticking out, it scraped along the tunnel all the way to the next station and it
was a bloody stump at the end. But the base fare was only a dollar.
In my day, we didn't have water. We had to smash together our own hydrogen and
oxygen atoms.
Kids today think the world revolves around them. In my day, the sun revolved
around the world, and the world was perched on the back of a giant tortoise.
Back in my day, '60 Minutes' wasn't just a bunch of gray-haired, liberal
80-year-old guys. It was a bunch of gray-haired, liberal 60-year-old guys.
Back in my day, they hadn't invented electricity. We had to watch television by
candlelight.

Thanks,
Shari!

Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again
The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know
That when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart
Rain please tell me now does that seem fair
For her to steal my heart away when she don't care
I can't love another when my hearts somewhere far away
The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know that when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart
[Instrumental Interlude]
Rain won't you tell her that I love her so
Please ask the sun to set her heart aglow
Rain in her heart and let the love we knew start to grow
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again
Oh, listen to the falling rain
Pitter pater, pitter pater
Oh, oh, oh, listen to the falling rain
Pitter pater, pitter pater
