Rhythm of the Rain

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the moldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, "The Rainy Day"
(
27 Feb 1807 - 24 Mar 1882)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   Today's Newsletter is prompted by the "lovely" weather we're having here in the St. Louis area.  Perhaps it's raining where you are, too.

BONUS #1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQstQST1GiM - Rhythm of the Rain - The Cascades

BONUS #2 - http://www.rhythmoftherain.com/ - SURPRISE!

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_of_the_Rain:

"Rhythm of the Rain" is a song performed by The Cascades, released in November 1962. It was written by Cascades band member John Claude Gummoe. It rose to #3 on the US pop charts on March 9, 1963, and it spent two weeks at #1 on the US "Easy listening" chart [1]. The song was also a Top 5 hit in the United Kingdom and a #1 single in Ireland. In 1999, BMI listed the song as the ninth most performed song on radio/TV in the 20th century.[2]

The Cascades' recording was used in the soundtrack of the 1979 film Quadrophenia and included in its soundtrack album.

REUNION ALERTS:

      From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 05/11/10 - "Class of 1965's 45-Year Reunion":

The NNHS Class of 1965 will hold its 45-Year Reunion on Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2010 - which is OPEN to all classes!

Friday evening we will meet at R.J.'s Restaurant and Sports Bar. The only cost will be what you choose to eat and drink. The company will be priceless.

Saturday will be spent at Newport News Park. We've reserved a group shelter that can seat 150 people with sufficient cover to take care of any weather concerns. If you made it to the 55th Birthday Party you'll recall it was held at the Park in one of the smaller shelters. The facility we're using this time is a new addition and will give us lots of flexibility to meet and reminisce. The cost of this event is $15.00 per person through August 31, 2010. After that date the cost will be $20.00 per person. The charge for Saturday will cover your food and beverages.

     From Me ('65) of IL - 07/13/10 - "My Anniversary Gift to You (continued from Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday)":

   I decided to actually work on the site itself and do some long overdue scanning.  As a result, these pages are either entirely new or newly fleshed-out with images:

http://nnhs65.com/SITE-MAP.html

      http://www.nnhs65.com/band.html

           http://www.nnhs65.com/band-67.html - brand new page!

   Why, you may well wonder, did I concentrate solely on the Class of 1967??  That's because         David Whitley ('67) of VA graciously loaned me his 1967 Anchor back in the Fall of 2006 and it's high time to return it to him!

   Thanks again, Gorgeous!

NOTE: I had planned to finish several more sections, but this is taking even longer (and making me even nutzier!) than I had anticipated, so I'll be working on this for the next few days.

      From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 07/19/10 - "... Contest...":

Hi,

I see I owe some email, but have a very busy day. It's been one trip of a weekend with car problems, as I had to make a 4 hour trip, little unexpectants and my computer went on the blink. I'm not sure if it was a viral attack or my fur babies, but nothing would access. Upon calling my server they informed me my computer sounded shot. After throwing a small adult hissy fit, then praying to God, the angels and anyone that cared to listen, I noticed all my icons for all Microsoft programs had been disabled. Checking to enable the entire panel started everything working again. I share that in case that ever happens to one of you. Will attempt to give responses late tonight or tomorrow and sorry for the delay.

Have a grrreat day,
Shari

I think I included this before, but this is on a friend's page and I listened to it in full ..such a nice and broad ranged voice this kid has!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Washington Post had a contest wherein participants were asked to tell the younger generation how much harder they had it "in the old days." Winners, runners-up, and honorable mentions are listed below.
Second Runner-Up:
In my day, we couldn't afford shoes, so we went barefoot. In winter, we had to wrap our feet with barbed wire for traction.
First Runner-Up:
In my day, we didn't have MTV or in-line skates, or any of that stuff. No, it was 45s and regular old metal-wheeled roller skates, and the 45s always skipped, so to get them to play right you'd weigh the needle down with something like quarters, which we never had because our allowances were way too small, so we'd use our skate keys instead and end up forgetting they were taped to the record player arm so that we couldn't adjust our skates, which didn't really matter because those crummy metal wheels would kill you if you hit a pebble anyway, and in those days roads had real pebbles on them, not like today.
And the winner:
In my day, we didn't have rocks. We had to go down to the creek and wash our clothes by beating them with our heads.
Honorable Mentions:
In my day, we didn't have fancy health-food restaurants. Every day we ate lots of easily recognizable animal parts, along with potatoes.
In my day, we didn't have hand-held calculators. We had to do addition on our fingers. To subtract, we had to have some fingers amputated.
In my day, we didn't get that disembodied, slightly ticked-off voice saying 'Doors closing.' We got on the train, the doors closed, and if your hand was sticking out, it scraped along the tunnel all the way to the next station and it was a bloody stump at the end. But the base fare was only a dollar.
In my day, we didn't have water. We had to smash together our own hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
Kids today think the world revolves around them. In my day, the sun revolved around the world, and the world was perched on the back of a giant tortoise.
Back in my day, '60 Minutes' wasn't just a bunch of gray-haired, liberal 80-year-old guys. It was a bunch of gray-haired, liberal 60-year-old guys.
Back in my day, they hadn't invented electricity. We had to watch television by candlelight.
      Thanks, Shari!
FINALLY:
From
ArcaMax
Jokes - 07/19/10:
Signing the Declaration...
A school teacher was quizzing her students. "Johnny, who signed the Declaration of Independence?"
He said, "Darn if I know."
She was a little put out by his swearing, so she told him to go home and to bring his father with him when he came back. Next day, the father came with his son and sat in the back of the room to observe.
She started back in on her quiz and finally got back to the boy. "Now, Johnny, I'll ask you again. Who signed the Declaration of Independence?"
"Well, heck, teacher," Johnny said, "I told you I didn't know."
The father jumped up in the back, pointed a stern finger at his son, and said, "Johnny, if you signed that darn thing, heck, you darn well better admit it!"
The Life of a Cat - Day 283 Of My Captivity
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.
Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded; must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair; must try this on their bed.
Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was. Hmmm, not working according to plan.
There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.
I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...
Rhythm of the Rain
Written by John Claude Gummoe (b. 02 Aug 1938)
Recorded by The Cascades, 1962
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again
The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know
That when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart
Rain please tell me now does that seem fair
For her to steal my heart away when she don't care
I can't love another when my hearts somewhere far away
The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know that when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart
[Instrumental Interlude]
Rain won't you tell her that I love her so
Please ask the sun to set her heart aglow
Rain in her heart and let the love we knew start to grow
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again
Oh, listen to the falling rain
Pitter pater, pitter pater
Oh, oh, oh, listen to the falling rain
Pitter pater, pitter pater
