Ruth Alma Shelton Spain
Newport News High School Class of February 1942
Friends and Schoolmates,
I was deeply saddened to read today of the death of Ruth Shelton Spain, Class of February 1942, sister of the late Sallie Shelton, Carrie Shelton Galloway (1922 - 09 Apr 1989) and Buck Shelton (February 1941) (01 Apr 1923 - 17 July 2015), who passed away in Newport News on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at the age of 94. I remember Ivan and Ruth and their beautiful family so fondly from our time as members of Trinity Methodist Church. She seemed always to be the epitome of a true gracious southern woman.
Widow of Ivan Spain (17 May 1921 - 01 Sept 2004), and mother of Susan Spain Beers, Eddie Spain of VA, and David Spain, she was the aunt of NNHS Teacher Sallie Galloway Gill (York HS - '62) of IL, and of the late Lee Galloway (York HS - '65) (14 Apr 1947 - 27 Mar 1971).

Servant of God, Well Done!
Charles Wesley (28 Dec 1707 - 29 Mar 1788)
Music by George J. Elvey (27 Mar 1816 - 09 Dec 1893)
(The Methodist Hymnal, 1966, #288)
Wesley wrote this hymn in 1770 on
the occasion of the death of clergyman George White.
Elvey's tune, "Diademata", has been set to several other hymns, notably "Crown Him with Many Thorns" and "Soldiers of Christ, Arise".
Servant of God, well done!
Thy glorious warfare’s past;
The battle’s fought, the race is won,
And thou art crowned at last.
With saints enthroned on high,
Thou dost thy Lord proclaim,
And still to God salvation cry,
Salvation to the Lamb!
O happy, happy soul!
In ecstasies of praise,
Long as eternal ages roll,
Thou seest Thy Savior’s face.
Redeemed from earth and pain,
Ah! when shall we ascend,
And all in Jesus’ presence reign
