White Wedding

“To keep your marriage brimming,
With love in the wedding cup,
Whenever you're wrong, admit it;
Whenever you're right, shut up.”

From Joan Lauterbach Krause ('60) of VA - 07/17/09 - "Boarding Houses":

Hi Again,

Boarding Houses stories ...

During the depression the shipyard was one of the few employers who didn't lay off their employees.  They reduced the number of shift hours, so each of their employees had some money coming in.  With the onset of WWII work exploded at the shipyard.  A lot of men and women came to Newport News from North Carolina and West Virginia because of the work.  When they first arrived there was very little housing.  (My husband)  Dick (Krause - '56 / '57) (05 Feb 1939 - 27 Dec 1999) told me that the the widows in the big houses near the shipyard began renting out rooms -plus feeding the workers a hot lunch for a small amount of money.  He told me that as the work load increased at the yard, and more workers arrived, they were sharing beds at the boarding houses.  They called them 'hot beds' because as one worker got up to report for his 12 hour shift, another fellow was getting off work and headed straight to sleep in the same bed.

I know for a fact the hot lunches continued well into the 60's.  Dick was accepted to the NNSB Apprentice School after he graduated from high school.  He loved those boarding house lunches - fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn on the cob, green beans and of course hot biscuits for a couple of bucks and don't forget the SWEEEET TEA.

The housing situation was relieved by the construction of Ferguson Park Apartments adjacent to Huntington Park, Newsome Park, and Copeland Park.

Probably, some of you will remember more of these stories.

Joan

Thank you so much, Joan! I really appreciate your input!

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of TX - 07/02/09 - "WW II posters :~ (#14 in a Series of 18)":

Thought you might like these...love bh

  Some old fashioned  Patriotism.

I wonder whatever happened to this kind of thinking in America. I got a lump in my throat when I read this..  I "grew up" thinking: patriotism, it is the AMERICAN  way!  I am glad to see that somebody saved these. The statement at the end says it all!

These were our parents. What in God's name have we let happen to our Country? We were taught these values and then we let them die .....  I guess we are the last generation to see, or even remember anything like these? Whatever happened? Political correctness (or "re-education") happened, lack of God's name happened, lack of personal responsibility happened, lack of personal integrity and honesty happened, lack of respect and loyalty to our country happened, lack of being an American happened.

ALERTS:

1.   From Jane Chambers of VA - 07/01/09 - "CNC BOOK BROCHURE & AD":

Attached is the two-sided brochure.... It has an order form on it. All former CNC students (whether or not they got a degree from CNC) can get the $5 alumni discount if they order the book with this form. They will need to write on the order form "alumni discount" and put $24.95 in the blank beside $29.95. They will have to pay S&H also and (if in Virginia) 5% Sales Tax.

Attached also is an ad we ran in the Daily Press, which lists places where the book can be bought in the Tidewater area. Except for the CNU bookstore, there is no discount price for these copies. However, buyers can get signed copies at all of these places EXCEPT the CNU Bookstore, which did not want signed copies.  Signed means signed by all 3 authors: Chambers, Hubbard, and Wood.

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes.com - 07/17/09:

Ad Space

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) announced that it is selling advertising space in the error messages that appear in Windows.

Acknowledging for the first time that the average user of their operating system encounters error messages at least several times a day, Microsoft is trying to take financial advantage of the unavoidable opportunity to make an ad impression.

"We estimate that throughout the world at any given moment several million people are getting a 'General Protection Fault' or 'Illegal Operation' warning. We will be able to generate significant revenue by including a short advertising message along with it," said Microsoft marketing director Nathan Mirror.

He also mentioned that Microsoft is intended to add banner ads into its Blue Screen of Death in the near future.

The Justice Department immediately indicated that they intend to investigate whether Microsoft is gaining an unfair advantage in reaching the public with this advertising by virtue of its semi-monopolistic control over error messages.

Bill Gates in Heaven

When Bill Gates died, he went up to Heaven, where Saint Peter showed him to his house, a beautiful 20 room house, with grounds and a tennis court.

Bill Gates was pleased, and spent many months enjoying the amenities of Heaven.

One day, he was enjoying one of Heaven's many fine parks, when he ran into a man dressed in a fine tailored suit.

"That is a nice suit, my friend," said Gates. "Where did you get it?"

"Actually," the man replied, "I was given a hundred of these when I got here. I've been treated really well. I got a mansion on a hill overlooking a beautiful hill, with a huge five-hundred acre estate, a golf course, and three Rolls Royces."

"Were you a Pope, or a doctor healing the sick?" asked Gates.

"No," said his new friend, "Actually, I was the captain of the Titanic."

Hearing this made Gates so angry that he immediately stalked off to find St. Peter.

Cornering Peter, he told him about the man he had just met, saying, "How could you give me a paltry new house, while you're showering new cars, a mansion, and fine suits on the Captain of the Titanic? I invented the Windows operating system! Why does he deserve better??!"

"Yes, but we use Windows," replied Peter, "and the Titanic only crashed once."

White Wedding

Written and performed by Billy Idol, 1982
(b. 30 Nov 1955)

Hey little sister what have you done
Hey little sister who's the only one
Hey little sister who's your superman
Hey little sister who's the one you want
Hey little sister shot gun!

It's a nice day to start again
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.

Hey little sister what have you done
Hey little sister who's the only one
I've been away for so long (so long)
I've been away for so long (so long)
I let you go for so long

It's a nice day to start again (come on)
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.

(Pick it up)

Take me back home
There is nothin' fair in this world
There is nothin' safe in this world
And there's nothin' sure in this world
And there's nothin' pure in this world
Look for something left in this world
Start again
Come on

It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again
