Look to the Rainbow

“Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold.
But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure
that your most important decision in the day simply consists
of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow.”

- Douglas Pagels

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This tune has been running through my head for the last ten days.  When at last I remembered what it was and Googled to find the midi and lyrics, I was delighted and amused to find them both on a page entitled "The World's Most Haunting Melodies".
Boy Howdy!!!

UPCOMING BIRTHDAYS:

Happy Birthday tomorrow to    Sandi Bateman Chestnut's ('65 - of VA) husband, Dale Chestnut (Nakina HS, NC - '54) of VA

  Have a great day, Dale!

From Me ('65) of NC - 07/18/07 - "Assorted Rainbows":

When I began making this Newsletter and found it more difficult than I had expected to locate suitable images for it, I suddenly remembered that we had made a page for the Rainbow Soda Shop.  Rather than reinvent the wheel, I thought I'd go check out what might be available there.  Unfortunately, I found that that page was created while I was just learning how to do such things, and was sorely lacking (and rather garish!) itself.

So I just kept going, and then redecorated the Rainbow Soda Shop a bit:

From Al Simms ('60) of VA - 07/17/07:

Carol,

Did you get my email last week with the photos of the USMC museum attached?

Al Simms,
Class of 60

I'm sorry, Al! Yes, of course I did! I thought I'd acknowledged that, but you know what a slacker I am!

I'm working on them now; they'll be in the next regular issue - really, really!

From Someone or Other - 07/16/07 - "Craig Williams":

Do me a favor and ask Karrin Williams Frankie (Warwick HS - '61 - of VA) about her brother Craig Williams!!!

   Oh, Karrin!!! WILD GIGGLES!!!

From Roberta Hilsdon ('70) of GA to Kathy Cooper ('70) of VA - 07/13/07:

I saw that movie, too!

AHA!!! We may even have all been together!
However,    Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) doesn't think it was made in 3-D, after all - which may explain why we're having trouble finding it that way.....

Thanks, Cheryl! It was fun talking with you - as always!

You're right, Eva - I do!  Thanks so much!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/17/07:

Hi, Carol:

Well, after reading the See You in September newsletter and the comments by
Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard ('58) of NC about Larry Armstrong ('53 - of MD), one can readily see that my sister Nancy Madagan Van Orden ('61) of FL and    Judi Hawley Whitestone ('61) of VA were not the only ones struck by the handsome form of their Life Guard and Swimming Instructor at the Municipal Pool in Newport News.

Marvin Turley was the Head Life Guard back then, and Larry Armstrong and Ronnie Jenkins were the two life guards and swimming instructors at the pool. Ronnie recently won a 70 mile bicycle race here in Florida, so you can tell that he has not slacked off in his physical training since retiring as a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. Larry Armstrong is now a restaurateur in Annapolis, Maryland.

Thanks, Joe! I've added your comment to Mr. Armstrong's page:

          http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/teachers.html

               http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/teach-Armstrong.html

In addition to adding Beaconsdale to the pages of Our Neighborhoods, maybe you can persuade
Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI to furnish you with a photo or two of Colonial Place Church of Christ so you can add it to the pages of Our Places of Worship on the website.

Those will be two great new pages! I'm hoping to create them tomorrow, Major Madagan!

Thank you for all you do for the TYPHOON Nation and all the refugees from other schools.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

   Thank you, Adonis!

From Mickey Spivey ('65) of FL - 07/17/07:

Carol,

No problem on putting my e-mail out there. Picture also. Birthday was (is?) 5/30/1947, the TRUE Memorial Day! Back then, I was always off on my birthday before they went to the "last Monday" junk! :)

Love ya! Mickey

Thanks, Mickey Darlin'! I've scanned your senior portrait and added your information to all of those pages:

Paul, you Sweetie-Pie! That's it exactly! Thanks so much! It'll be on the very next regular Newsletter!

From Chandler Nelms (Hampton - '63) of MD - 07/18/07:

Seeing the picture of Buckroe Beach took me back to when I was a lifeguard there in the early 60's. One afternoon while sitting up on my stand in front of the main pavilion, I noticed three or four guys wrestling in the sand and being quite boisterous. No harm, no foul. But upon a closer look, none of them had on bathing suits, in fact none of them had on ANYTHING! They were all quite nude. I approached them apprehensively and interrupted their rough housing and asked them what they thought they were doing, to which they replied, "Oh, just having a wee bit of fun, Mate."

I replied, "Well, you can't go around in a public place in the nude."

They replied, "Why not?"

about 1970

So I explained and they complied with my direction to put their swim trunks back on. By this time a crowd had gathered to enjoy the spectacle. It was apparent that they were all inebriated, so I asked them what they had been drinking and one of them lifted up a fifth bottle and said, "A bit of the Grand Old Dad, would you care to partake?"

I just laughed and returned to my stand. We got a lot of interesting characters at the beach coming off the foreign ships that put in at Newport News back in those days.

Chandler Nelms

What a perfectly wonderful story! Thanks for sharing it, Chandler Darlin'!

From Karrin Williams Frankie (Warwick HS - '61) of VA - 06/26/07 - "Calling all Riverside Hospital Graduates":

I just received this email from a high school classmate to pass on. Please pass onto anyone you think might be a nurse or knows someone so they can have a great reunion. With so many people moving or getting married or re-married after graduation, it is hard to find everyone and emailing is a wonderful tool.

Thanks.

Karrin,

I know you have access to other classes besides our own. We are trying to let as many people know about our reunion as possible. Please forward this if it is not too much trouble.

Riverside School of Professional Nursing is having a Grand Reunion of all classes July 21 and July 22, 2007. There will be a luncheon on Saturday and a tour of the new school campus. Saturday night is open for the individual classes to meet. Sunday there will be a family picnic in NN Park, Jefferson Avenue near Ft. Eustis.

If you are a graduate or know someone who is, please help us get the word out so as many as possible will know and be able to attend. e-mail response or questions to:

rspnalumni@widowmaker.com

You can also e-mail me.
Judy Ring Whitehead

Judy

Look to the Rainbow

Words and Music by E.Y. Harburg and Burton Lane, from "Finian's Rainbow," 1946

On the day I was born,
Said my father, said he
I've an elegant legacy waiting for ye.
'Tis a rhyme for your lips
And a song for your heart
To sing it whenever the world falls apart

(chorus -)
Look, look, look to the rainbow
follow it over the hill and stream
look look look to the rainbow
follow the fellow who follows a dream.

'Twas a sumptuous gift
To bequeath to a child
Oh, the lure of that song kept me feet running wild
For you never grow old
And you never stand still
With whippoorwills singing beyond the next hill.
(chorus)...

So I pondered my heart
and I roamed the world free
To the east with the lark
To the west with the sea
And I searched all the earth
And I scanned all the skies
But I found it at last in my own true love's eyes.
(chorus)
