From the Daily Press - 07/17/06:

  Buron Avery "Buck" Whitley

NEWPORT NEWS - Buron A. 'Buck' Whitley of Newport News, at the age of 82, with his family gathered by his side, passed from this life on Friday, July 14, 2006. Born in 1924 in North Carolina, he was a decorated combat veteran of W.W. II, and following the war, moved to the Peninsula where he started his family. He is survived by Mary, his loving and devoted wife of 58 years; a daughter, Susan Bryan of Yorktown; a son, David of Newport News; six granddaughters; four great-grandsons; and his dear brother, Robert of Hampton. Buck retired from the Army Reserves in 1967, and Civil Service in 1981, at which time he was introduced by his brother to the game of golf, a hobby where he formed some of his closest friendships and gave him so many years of enjoyment. Those close to him knew a man who was toughened by combat and a life of hard work, and whose occasional rough exterior sheltered a tender and gentle heart. He was a loving husband and a dedicated father and grandfather whose greatest love was his wife, children and grandchildren. He never forgot a friend, old or new, and will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Peninsula Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to www.active.com/donate/leukemiacupsc/whitley or mail a check payable to Lymphoma and Leukemia Society, 310 Broad St., Suite 2-A, Charleston, SC 29401.

Mary, David and Susan,
We were so sorry to learn of the loss of Buck. We thought of your family as the first and best friends we had in Hampton--so long ago, and through the years we would have the best memories and best laughs remembering things we did back then. We often thought and talked fondly of you, Buck and the family. It is with the deepest sympathy that we send this message, and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Where Can I Turn For Peace?

Words by Emma Lou Thayne (b. 1924)
Music by Jolene G. Meredith (b. 1935)

Where can I turn for peace? Where is my solace
When other sources cease to make me whole?
When with a wounded heart, anger, or malice,
I draw myself apart, Searching my soul?

Where, when my aching grows, Where, when I languish,
Where, in my need to know, where can I run?
Where is the quiet hand to calm my anguish?
Who, who can understand? He, only One.

He answers privately, Reaches my reaching
In my Gethsemane, Savior and Friend.
Gentle the peace he finds for my beseeching.
Constant he is and kind, Love without end.
