07/15/13 - NNHS Newsletter - You Send Me

“Love one another and you will be happy.
It's as simple and as difficult as that.”

- Michael Leunig
(b. 02 June 1945)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Mmmm... Today's Golden Oldie always makes me want to dance.

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqzv1ZS6uZs - You Send Me - Sam Cooke

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Send_Me:

"You Send Me" is a 1957 single by R&B singer-songwriter Sam Cooke. The song was his first secular single released through Keen Records, an imprint of RCA Victor Records. (His first non-gospel single, "Lovable," was released earlier that year under a pseudonym.) Released in September 1957, the record became an instant hit, topping the charts on both the Billboard Pop and R&B singles charts.[1] The record established Cooke as a mainstream R&B singer, apart from his gospel roots.

At the same time a rendition was also released by Teresa Brewer, which reached #8 on the pop charts.[2]

Since its release, the song has become a landmark record of the soul genre, which Cooke helped create. It was named as one of the 500 most important rock and roll recordings by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2005, the song was voted #115 by representatives of the music industry and press in Rolling Stone magazine's The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

From My Friend, Susan, of NC - 07/14/13 - "17 Phrases You're Probably Saying Wrong":

http://www.sheknows.com/living/articles/1003885/17-phrases-youre-probably-saying-wrong

AHH! The grammar police! Thank you so much, Susan - I love this!

Upon reading the article, however, I am persuaded to believe that these may be regional errors, as the author calls these all "very common" misuses, and I've never heard many of them (though she did mention the odious "anyways"). Additionally several glaring mistakes that set my nerves on fire she did not even address. The most rampant one is "There's more than twenty people out there." NO! "There're more than twenty people out there."

I was also hoping to find some mention of the misuse of "hopefully" which learned once in Reader's Digest that I myself abuse, but I did not manage to incorporate its correct usage, and now I cannot find that information.

   "Anyone? Anyone?"

From My Friend, Angela, of NC - 07/14/13 - "Pecan Pie Caramel Cheesecake":

  Pecan Pie Caramel Cheesecake

FOR THE CRUST:
3 cups Graham Cracker Crumbs
½ cups Butter, Melted
½ cups Granulated Sugar

FOR THE FILLING:
3 packages (8 Oz. Package) Cream Cheese, Softened
¾ cups Granulated Sugar
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
2 whole Large Eggs
½ cups All-purpose Flour
¾ teaspoons Cinnamon
¼ teaspoons Nutmeg

FOR THE TOPPING:
1-½ cup Pecan, Halves, Lightly Toasted*
2 cups Good Quality Caramel Syrup (homemade Is Best)

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients for the crust until moist. Press into a 10-inch springform pan and set aside.
For the filling, in a stand mixer, whip cream cheese and sugar together until smooth. With the mixer on low, stir in vanilla and eggs, one at a time. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl and stir again. Whip in flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Scrape sides and stir again if necessary. Pour filling into prepared crust and smooth the top. Bake for 40-45 minutes until cheesecake is set and hardly jiggles, if at all, when moved. Remove from the oven and cool completely to room temperature.
Arrange pecan halves on top of the entire cheesecake in concentric circles. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Once ready to serve, run a knife around the edges of the cheesecake and remove the sides of the springform pan.
To serve you can either drizzle 1 cup of caramel syrup over the entire cheesecake and cut (with extra syrup to serve along with) or cut first and drizzle individual pieces.

Side note: I prefer to warm my caramel syrup to have a delicious contrast of hot and cold for this dessert. Totally optional!

   YUMMY! Thanks, Angela!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 07/14/13:

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night, and went to sleep.

Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.

"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars."

"What does that tell you?" Holmes asked.

Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.

Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant.

Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

What does it tell you?"

Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke.

"Watson, you idiot. Somebody has stolen our tent!"

You Send Me

Written and recorded by Sam Cooke (22 Jan 1931 – 11 Dec 1964), 1957

Darling you send me
I know you send me
Darling you send me
Honest you do, honest you do
Honest you do, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

You thrill me
I know you, you, you thrill me
Darling you, you, you, you thrill me
Honest you do

At first I thought it was infatuation
But woo, it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting
To marry you and take you home
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

You, you, you, you send me
I know you send me
I know you send me
Honest you do

Whoa-oh-oh, whenever I'm with you
I know, I know, I know when I'm near you
Mmm hmm, mmm hmm, honest you do, honest you do
Whoa-oh-oh, I know-oh-oh-oh

I know, I know, I know, when you hold me
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, whenever you kiss me
Mmm hmm, mmm hmm, honest you do

At first I thought it was infatuation
But woo, it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting
To marry you and take you home

I know, I know, I know, you send me
I know you send me
Whoa-oh-oh-oh, you you you you send me
Honest you do
