07/15/10 - NNHS Newsletter - You Send Me

“Love one another and you will be happy.
It's as simple and as difficult as that.”

- Michael Leunig
(b. 02 June 1945)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Mmmm... Today's Golden Oldie always makes me want to dance.

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqzv1ZS6uZs - You Send Me - Sam Cooke

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Send_Me:

"You Send Me" is a 1957 single by R&B singer-songwriter Sam Cooke. The song was his first secular single released through Keen Records, an imprint of RCA Victor Records. (His first non-gospel single, "Lovable," was released earlier that year under a pseudonym.) Released in September 1957, the record became an instant hit, topping the charts on both the Billboard Pop and R&B singles charts.[1] The record established Cooke as a mainstream R&B singer, apart from his gospel roots.

At the same time a rendition was also released by Teresa Brewer, which reached #8 on the pop charts.[2]

Since its release, the song has become a landmark record of the soul genre, which Cooke helped create. It was named as one of the 500 most important rock and roll recordings by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2005, the song was voted #115 by representatives of the music industry and press in Rolling Stone magazine's The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

REUNION ALERTS:

      From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 05/11/10 - "Class of 1965's 45-Year Reunion":

The NNHS Class of 1965 will hold its 45-Year Reunion on Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2010 - which is OPEN to all classes!

Friday evening we will meet at R.J.'s Restaurant and Sports Bar. The only cost will be what you choose to eat and drink. The company will be priceless.

Saturday will be spent at Newport News Park. We've reserved a group shelter that can seat 150 people with sufficient cover to take care of any weather concerns. If you made it to the 55th Birthday Party you'll recall it was held at the Park in one of the smaller shelters. The facility we're using this time is a new addition and will give us lots of flexibility to meet and reminisce. The cost of this event is $15.00 per person through August 31, 2010. After that date the cost will be $20.00 per person. The charge for Saturday will cover your food and beverages.

From Dee Hodges Bartram ('66) of VA - 07/14/10 - "Class of 1966":

Hi Carol!

I have been recuperating from emergency eye surgery and have not been on the pc for some time.  My sight has not totally returned but time is slipping away to start planning for the 45-year reunion for the Class of 1966.  I will be retiring July 29th and will have more time now to do this.  I want to make sure that I have the most up to date e-mail addresses for the class so would you please put a note in your newsletter asking those in my class to send and e-mail my way (dhbartram@cox.net) so I can verify that I have a good address in order to request suggestions and to send out information about the reunion?

A dinner for the locals and anyone in the class that happens to be this way, will be held on Saturday, August 14th at 6:30 at Angelo’s Restaurant on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in Newport News to start the planning process.

Thanks for your help!

Dee Hodges Bartram

YOWZERONI!!! I'm so sorry to hear of your vision problems, Dee! Our collective Best Wishes for a speedy recovery!

I've posted your Planning Meeting in the Dates to Remember below.

TODAY IN WWII:

July 15, 1942 - The systematic deportation of Jews from the Warsaw ghetto began. Thousands were rounded up and transported to a newly constructed concentration/extermination camp in Treblinka, Poland.

TODAY IN 1965:

Thursday, July 15, 1965 - Politician David Miliband was born in London, England.

Thursday, July 15, 1965 - Politician Francis Cherry, the 35th Governor of Arkansas, (b. 05 Sept 1908 in Fort Worth, Texas) died of heart disease in Washington, D.C. at the age of 56.

From Me ('65) of IL - 07/13/10 - "My Anniversary Gift to You (continued from Tuesday and Wednesday)":

I decided to actually work on the site itself and do some long overdue scanning.  As a result, these pages are either entirely new or newly fleshed-out with images:

http://nnhs65.com/SITE-MAP.html

http://nnhs65.com/prom.html - three new images of the 1967 Prom

http://www.nnhs65.com/ANCHOR-Staffs.html - brand new section (barely begun)

http://www.nnhs65.com/BEACON-Staffs.html - brand new section (barely begun)

Why, you may well wonder, did I concentrate solely on the Class of 1967??  That's because         David Whitley ('67) of VA graciously loaned me his 1967 Anchor back in the Fall of 2006 and it's high time to return it to him!

   Thanks again, Gorgeous!

NOTE: I had  planned to finish several more sections, but this is taking even longer (and making me even nutzier!) than I had anticipated, so I'll be working on this for the next few days.

From Patsy Bloxom Meider ('57) of NC - 07/13/10 - "new email address":

Carol

I want to thank you for all you do for NNHS classmates.  I also want to thank you for all you did for my sister    Connie (Bloxom) Thompson ('66). I sure do miss her.

I have a new email address: __________________.

Patsy Bloxom Meider  Class of 57

Thank you so much.

Thank you, Patsy! I have your addy switched now (though your note inexplicably hid itself in my Spam folder for a while!?!)!

I cannot even imagine your pain at losing your baby sister, but I do miss the long telephone calls she and I used to enjoy.

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/14/10 - "Congratulations on 10 Years.":

Hi, Carol:

Time to celebrate your labor of love for the TYPHOON Nation by publishing your newsletter for 10 years!!!
It will be fun to read the responses from your many subscribers in the next few electronic publications.

Thanks for posting the accomplishments of the various 1967 TYPHOON Teams!

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Thank you so much, Adonis! Technically, it's only the website itself that's ten years old; the Newsletters which once so intimidated me and which now occupy so much of my time were a complete afterthought, and are only about six years old.

http://nnhs65.com/NNHS-Newsletters-2004.html

Now that I am adjusting to scanning something each and every day, I'll try to maintain that commitment to fill in all the Big Blanks scattered throughout the site - sports and otherwise.

Speaking of scanning, I found Bridget's third grade picture tucked safely in my third grade album, and just in the nick of time.....

From Bridget Whitt Jones ('65) of AR - 07/14/10 - "Our 45-Year Reunion":

Thanks so much for all the hard work you do. I am definitely sad you can't make it to the Reunion. I was so looking forward to seeing you again after 45 years. I will miss you.

Thanks so much, Bridget! I would have loved to have seen you as well!

I'm feeling so much better now than I did last year, I actually toyed with the idea for a while, but I just don't see how I can swing it..... But I've learned that anything is possible so who knows?!?

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/14/10 - "Bastille Day":

Hi, Carol:

The theme of your Newsletter was very interesting, especially the historical notes regarding La Marseillaise and the fact that Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his two successors changed the National Anthem of France during the time they were the "head of state", to put it mildly.

Please allow me this opportunity to recommend a book for those TYPHOON Nation subscribers who enjoy reading about mankind's History. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE by Alan Schom, Published by Harper Perennial, A Division of Harper Collins Publishers, ISBN 0-06-092958-8 is a great read.

Alan Schom dedicated this book to Emile Zola (1840-1902) "...who gave his life to the struggle for historical truth." (Famous for clearing the name of Captain Dreyfus - who surely would have been promoted to Major or even higher were it not for rampant Anti-Semitism in the French Army Intelligence Corps, and his wrongful imprisonment on Devil's Island.).

To borrow a line from the song "Waterloo" that goes something like "Little General, Napoleon of France, tried to conquer the world but lost his pants" is a fitting by-line.

Believe me Alan Schom pulls no punches.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Thanks again, Joe! Napoleon is one of those characters of whom it is justly said that "his name shall be had for good and evil." On the plus side, he was a friend of the Jewish people - certainly a rarity at that time and place.

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 07/14/10 - "Wood Bees":

Shari,

These are wood bees. Their eggs are like those plastic grapes we had back in the day ( same size and formation), only they are yellow at the end going to orange toward the stem. They live on wood surfaces, like barns and attics. They do sting. I had them in the garage where they decided to lay eggs in a five gallon plastic paint pail I use for left over pieces of wood. Scary! Good luck finding the egg nest. They are social beings and will not leave it, so just watch where they go.

Linda May '66

YOWZERONI!!! Thanks so much, Linda May! I sent this to Shari, and.....

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 07/14/10 - "RE: Wood Bees":

Carol,
Please thank your friend Linda. If anything I underestimated the size of the largest one. I may have found their desired location, but the size makes them quite intimidating. At first I thought it may have been a hummingbird.

L.Y.,
Shari

YIKESARONI-RINI!   BEE CAREFUL! I love you, too, Shari!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 07/14/10 - "Vietnam wall names listed by State, Amazing":

Vietnam wall names listed by State, Amazing

VIETNAM WALL.................................

CHECK THIS OUT!  INCREDIBLE!

First click on a state.  When it opens, scroll down to the city and the names will appear.

Then click on their names.

It should show you a picture of the person, or at least their bio and medals.

This really is an amazing web site.  Someone spent a lot of time and effort to create it.

I hope that everyone who receives this appreciates what those who served in Vietnam sacrificed for our country.

The link below is a virtual wall of all those lost during the Vietnam war with the names, bios and other information on our lost heroes.

Those who remember that timeframe, or perhaps lost friends or family can look them up on this site.  Pass the link on to others if you like.

http://www.virtualwall.org/iStates.htm

   Thank you so much, Norris!

From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX - 07/10/10 - "Special Poem For Older Folks (#5 in a Series of 6)":

"Stop Worrying about the Storm; Learn to Dance in the Rain"

I often wondered about this myself!
Most of you can pass this on to some old cognitive codger that you know.

Special Poem For Older Folks

A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they won't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
And tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or choke or even sneeze..
The red ones, smallest of them all
Go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know..
Is what tells each one where to go!

LAUGH A LITTLE EVERY DAY....

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it.

For example I am sitting here right now thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

    WILDER GIGGLES!

   Thanks, Glenn!

FINALLY:
From ArcaMax Jokes - 07/14/10:

Drunk at Confessional

A drunk was staggering down the main street of town. Somehow, he managed to make it up the stairs to the cathedral and into the building, where he crashed from pew to pew. He finally made his way to a side aisle and into a confessional.

A priest had been observing the man's sorry progress. Figuring the fellow was in need of some assistance, he proceeded to enter his side of the confessional. His attention was rewarded only by a lengthy silence.

Finally he asked, "May I help you, my son?"

"I dunno." came the drunk's voice from behind the partition. "You got any toilet paper on your side?"

You Send Me

Written and recorded by Sam Cooke (22 Jan 1931 – 11 Dec 1964), 1957

Darling you send me
I know you send me
Darling you send me
Honest you do, honest you do
Honest you do, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

You thrill me
I know you, you, you thrill me
Darling you, you, you, you thrill me
Honest you do

At first I thought it was infatuation
But woo, it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting
To marry you and take you home
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

You, you, you, you send me
I know you send me
I know you send me
Honest you do

Whoa-oh-oh, whenever I'm with you
I know, I know, I know when I'm near you
Mmm hmm, mmm hmm, honest you do, honest you do
Whoa-oh-oh, I know-oh-oh-oh

I know, I know, I know, when you hold me
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, whenever you kiss me
Mmm hmm, mmm hmm, honest you do

At first I thought it was infatuation
But woo, it's lasted so long
Now I find myself wanting
To marry you and take you home

I know, I know, I know, you send me
I know you send me
Whoa-oh-oh-oh, you you you you send me
Honest you do
