Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today marks the tenth anniversary of our website: http://nnhs65.com/07-13-04-NNHS-Happy-4th-Anni-Newbies.html
Thanks for all your generous support in
so many ways!
BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFVy8td-H-A - The Anniversary Waltz - Connie Francis
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Anniversary_Waltz:
The Anniversary Waltz is a popular song written by Dave Franklin, the lyrics by Al Dubin. The song was published in 1941. It has been covered by Vera Lynn and Connie Francis. The title "Anniversary Waltz" is often mistakenly and confusingly used to refer to the entirely unrelated Anniversary Song.
REUNION ALERTS:
From Dave Arnold
('65) of VA - 05/11/10 - "Class of 1965's 45-Year Reunion":
The NNHS Class of 1965 will hold its 45-Year Reunion on Friday and Saturday, October 15 and 16, 2010 - which is OPEN to all classes!
Friday evening we will meet at R.J.'s Restaurant and Sports Bar. The only cost will be what you choose to eat and drink. The company will be priceless.
Saturday
will be spent at Newport News Park. We've reserved a group shelter that can seat
150 people with sufficient cover to take care of any weather concerns. If you
made it to the 55th Birthday Party you'll recall it was held at the Park in one
of the smaller shelters. The facility we're using this time is a new addition
and will give us lots of flexibility to meet and reminisce. The cost of this
event is $15.00 per person through August 31, 2010. After that date the cost
will be $20.00 per person. The charge for Saturday will cover your food and
beverages.

Certainly, David!
THIS WEEK'S BIRTHDAYS:
TODAY IN WWII: July 13, 1941 - Britain and the Soviet Union signed a mutual aid pact, that provided the means for Britain to send war material to the Soviet Union. July 13, 1941 - Montenegrins started a popular uprising against the Axis Powers (Trinaestojulski ustanak). |
TODAY IN 1965: Tuesday, July 13, 1965 - Writer, painter and iconographer Photios Kontoglou (Φώτης Κόντογλου) (b. 1895 in Aivali or Ayvalik, Greece) died in Athens, Greece at the age of 70. |

I decided to actually work on the site itself and do some long overdue scanning. As a result, these pages are either entirely new or newly fleshed-out with images:

Why, you may well wonder, did I
concentrate solely on the Class of 1967?? That's because
David Whitley ('67) of VA
graciously loaned me his 1967 Anchor back in the Fall of 2006 and it's
high time to return it to him!
Thanks again,
Gorgeous!
NOTE: I had planned to finish several more sections, but this is taking even longer (and making me even nutzier!) than I had anticipated, so I'll be working on this for the next few days.
From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 07/12/10
- "NNHS 64-64 BIRTHDAY CRUISE":
CLASS OF 1964:
I am pleased to report that I have
received the first reservations for our birthday celebration cruise on the
Spirit of Norfolk on Saturday, 23 October. The first non-Committee member
reservation to be received was not from Newport News or Hampton or even from
Virginia. Moreover, it was not from any of the states contiguous to Virginia.
That honor goes to
Suzanne Van Noy Mink, who will be travelling all the way from
Ohio to join us.
In addition to Suzanne’s
reservation, I received one from Committee member
Sandi Williams Patrick for her
and husband Harlee. Oh, yeah … I signed up as well. So, we have filled 4 of the
40 seats for which we are committed.
The first 40 paid reservations which we receive are guaranteed a seat. After that, upon receipt of paid reservations, we will continue to add to our attendance number as long as space is available. This means that you cannot wait too long to send us your reservation and check. Once all of the seats are filled, we will have to return your reservation and check to you. That is why we have not set the customary deadline for submission of reservations. We cannot know when all spaces will be taken. SO, ACT NOW TO ENSURE YOUR PLACE WITH US.
SUPER-DE-DUPER!
Thanks, David!

From Frank Blechman ('65) of Northern VA - 07/12/10 - " 'Long Live
Friendship!'.... Yes, indeed, this email is a 'Must Read', if you really believe
in and value FRIENDSHIP":
Friendship!
THIS WILL BRING ON A BIG SMILE, WHICH WILL LAST ALL DAY LONG!
After losing his parents, this 3 year old orangutan was so depressed he wouldn't
eat and didn't respond to any medical treatments. The veterinarians thought he
would surely die from sadness. The zoo keepers found an old sick dog on the
grounds in the park at the zoo where the orangutan lived and took the dog to the
animal treatment center. The dog arrived at the same time the orangutan was
there being treated. The 2 lost souls met and have been inseparable ever since.
The orangutan found a new reason to live and each always tries his best to be a
good companion to his new found friend. They are together 24 hours a day in all
their activities.
They live in Northern California where
swimming is their favorite past time, although Roscoe (the orangutan) is a
little afraid of the water and needs his friend's help to swim.
Together they have discovered the joy and laughter in life and the value of Friendship.
They have found more than a friendly shoulder to lean on.
Long Live Friendship!!!!!!!
I don't know......some say life is too short, others say it is too long; but I
know that nothing that we do makes sense, if we don't touch the Hearts of
Others... while it lasts!
This is The Real Me, isn't it,
Frank?!?
And of course, it reminded me at
once of our our dear friend,
Herbie - though not one
of us ever met him:

Thanks so much, Frank!
From My Cousin, Stuart Atkinson
(Warsaw HS - '63) of VA - 07/12/10 - "Puppy Size":
THIS IS A TERRIFIC STORY, BUT YOU MUST READ IT, DON'T JUST LOOK AT THE PICTURES!!!!!
Puppy Size
This is one of the
neatest stories you will ever hear. You will know precisely what this little
girl is talking about at the end (you'll want to share this one with your loved
ones and special friends)!
'Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again. We've been back to this animal
shelter at least five times. It has been weeks now since we started all of
this,' the mother told the volunteer.
'What is it she keeps asking for?' the volunteer asked.
'Puppy size!' replied the mother.'
Well, we have plenty of
puppies, if that's what she's looking for.' 'I know..... we have seen most of
them,' the mom said in frustration...
Just then Danielle came walking into the office.
'Well, did you find one?' asked her mom.
'No, not this time,' Danielle said with sadness in her voice. 'Can we come back
on the weekend?'
The two women looked at
each other, shook their heads and laughed.
'You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there's always a
supply,' the volunteer said.
Danielle took her mother by the hand and headed to the door. 'Don't worry, I'll
find one this weekend,' she said.
Over the next few days both Mom and Dad had long conversations with her. They
both felt she was being too particular.
'It's this weekend or we're not looking any more,' Dad finally said in frustration.
'We don't want to hear
anything more about puppy size, either,' Mom added.
Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning. By now
Danielle knew her way around, so she ran right for the section that housed the
smaller dogs.
Tired of the routine, Mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of the first
row of cages. There was an observation window so you could see the animals
during times when visitors weren't permitted.
Danielle walked slowly
from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look. One by one the
dogs were brought out and she held each one.
One by one she said, 'Sorry, but you're not the one.'
It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup. The
volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the dog and
held it closely. This time she took a little longer.
'Mom, that's it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know it!' She screamed
with joy. 'It's the puppy size!'
'But it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the last few
weeks,' Mom said.
'No, not size... The sighs. When I held him in my arms, he sighed,' she said.
'Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you told me love
depends on the sighs of your heart. The more you love, the bigger the sigh!'
The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn't know whether to
laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she did a little of both.
'Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come home from work and
hug each other, you both sigh. I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed
when I held it in my arms,' she said. Then, holding the puppy up close to her
face, she said, 'Mom, he loves me. I heard the sighs of his heart!'
Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh. I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a hot day. They are the sighs of God. Take the time to stop and listen; you will be surprised at what you hear.
'Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.'
I hope your life is filled with sighs.
Thank you so much,
Stuart!
SIGH!!!

We just discovered each other
Tonight when the lights were low
One dance led up to another
And now I can't let you go
So tell me I may always dance
The Anniversary Waltz with you
Tell me this is real romance
An anniversary dream come true
Let this be the answer
To our future years
Through millions of smiles
And a few little tears
May I always listen to
The Anniversary Waltz
With you
Let this be the answer
To our future years
Through millions of smiles
And a few little tears
May I always listen to
The Anniversary Waltz
With you...
