         Lawrence S. Cowling

    NEWPORT NEWS - A life-long resident of Newport News, where he practiced medicine for over 55 years, Dr. Cowling passed away at The Gardens at Warwick Forest early Saturday, July 7, 2012, one week after his 86th birthday.

He began his medical career at 18, joining the Navy right after graduating from Newport News High School, class of 1943. He served as a Pharmacist's Mate Second Class on the U.S.S. Riena Mercedes in Annapolis, Md., from 1944-46.

Dr. Cowling attended the University of Virginia, earning a B.A. in 1949 and a M.S. from the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences in 1950. He went on to the Medical College of Virginia receiving his M.D., in 1954, where he was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity and the vice president of his class. After a residency at Philadelphia General Hospital, Dr. Cowling opened a private practice in Newport News on Huntington Ave., where he was a general practitioner for over 35 years. He closed that office in 1991 and worked with several group practices until his retirement in 2008.

Jack Lawrence

  A founding member of St. Stephen's Episcopal church, Dr. Cowling was committed to community service. As a member of the Peninsula Kiwanis Club, he served various positions including president, treasurer, and board member. Dr. Cowling held a record of perfect attendance of more than 47 years. Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Words by Walter C. Smith, 1876
Music (St. Denio) by John Roberts, 1839

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
But of all Thy rich graces this grace, Lord, impart
Take the veil from our faces, the vile from our heart.

All laud we would render; O help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee,
And so let Thy glory, Almighty, impart,
Through Christ in His story, Thy Christ to the heart.
