Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Good afternoon, Sweetie-Pies!  I trust you're all well and happy - or at least trying to pull off a good bluff to that effect to trick your mind into believing that is indeed the case!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/08/06 - "Our Old Television Stations":

Hi, Carol:

Upon arrival at the Radisson Hotel in Hampton, VA last weekend I spotted a WVEC logo, and thought you might like it for this page on the website.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

What a fun thing to encounter at such a moment to remind you of us!

Thanks, Adonis!  I'll try to post that tonight on the Our Old Television page:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/television.html

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/09/06 - "Another Rose to brighten
your day":

Hi, Carol:

Since you enjoyed the images I sent to you earlier of the roses growing in my yard, I thought I would share another which is known as a "Tropicana Orange" and was delayed in blooming. It greeted us upon our return to Florida this weekend.

Ohhhh, how lovely!  Thank you so much, Joe!

I hope it will brighten your day, and know that we lift you and Paul up in prayer daily as you await employment opportunities.

Tropicana Orange Rose

It did indeed brighten my day, Joe, and I truly appreciate your prayers.  So far I've remained reasonably optimistic with only occasional intermittent moments of sheer and total panic, but then, it's only been ten days so far!

There is a lot of pain associated with being unemployed, and soon you will see why this circumstance came into your life.

BOY HOWDY!!!  (Nervous brave giggles!)  Yes, apparently we have yet to learn some very important lesson about humility or something or other, so we must keep repeating this scenario over and over and over...  I don't even recall how many times this makes.

So many TYPHOON of the Class of 1961 are subscribers to your newsletters and enjoy them.

That's so very nice to hear, Joe!  It's especially fun for me when I remember that I was but a lowly mouse when they were seniors!

So many used the nickname "Adonis" when approaching me during the reunion last weekend.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Oh, how fun!  What a nice way to remember Kathy (Pilgrim Clark - '63), who gave you that nickname!

From Al Simms ('60) of VA - 07/09/06 - "Vietnam War Facts":

Carol,

This is perhaps too long for a newsletter but with your interest in the military, I thought that you might find it interesting.  Most of this I already knew but had not see it all in one place before.  I cannot vouch for the accuracy of every detail in it but I do know that most of it is correct and have no reason to doubt the rest.  It came from a member of the NC Vietnam Veterans Yahoo Group.

Al Simms

Vietnam War Facts: Facts, Statistics, Fake Warrior Numbers, and Myths Dispelled

Okay, Al, maybe it was a little too long for inclusion in today's Newsletter; much to my disappointment. But given its importance, it certainly needed to be recorded on our pages, so I  posted it immediately:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/VA-Vietnam-KIA.html

Thank you so much for sending it.   I'm still shaking, reeling in the knowledge of how thorough a job of indoctrination of misinformation was perpetrated upon us. I'm pretty sure that's not even a well-constructed sentence, especially coming from an English major, but you can catch my meaning anyway.  I even believed much if not most of that garbage myself.....

I strongly encourage you all to read this.

From Linda Robinson Gillespie ('71) of VA - 07/09/06 - "More Info":

Carol,

I'm sorry I forgot to put where I'm located now - Richmond, VA.  Also, would you please add me to the birthday list - March 15, 1953.

Thank you,
Linda Robinson Gillespie - NNHS - Class of 1971

  From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/09/06 - "Class of 1961's 45-Year
Reunion:

Hi, Carol:

Many in the Class of 1961 visited our favorite stomping ground, Newport News High School during the reunion.

To illustrate the drastic changes in the use of this building, I made a Navy Exchange purchase while visiting the Navy Barracks that was formerly Newport News High School.

TYPHOON Regards,

Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Peering from Julie Conn's Office 10:42 AM - Julie Conn's Office 10:43 AM - Old Court

I am almost certain that someone sent you a photo of the window that Athletic Director Julius Conn used to observe the TYPHOON basketball games at home. But, just in case, here is another of that well known spot.

I could almost hear "Julie" shouting with glee, "We are going to tourneyville, we are going to tourneyville!!!"

This is the corner where the TYPHOON Bench was located for many years. I can still recall TYPHOON fans attending the JV and Varsity Basketball games sitting on the floor above the bench when the stands were full. They hung their feet and legs over the edge and used the lower bar for protection while the screamed and yelled for the TYPHOON.
10:51 AM - Band and Chorus Hall: FOREGROUND: Jack Harrison ('61) of VA; and _____ _____ 11:02 AM - Becky Smith Woods ('61); Eva Ellis Madagan ('61) of FL; and Fred Sage ('61) 11:04 AM - From Second Floor at old NNHS
This should bring back a few memories for some older TYPHOON. The band room was on the left and the chorus room on the right in this hallway. The steps seem much smaller now. While taking the tour of the old NNHS I was reminded of a site we all used to see but probably took for granted back in our youth. This old tree has survived many a year.
11:08 AM - Library Hall  11:13 AM - Old NNHS 11:35 AM - Class of 1961 Tour Group
Here is a view from the corridor by the library, which was over the Home Economics classes. The enticing smell of food cooking is long gone. This view brought back memories for me, and I wanted to share it with those who might also recall the view from the second floor of NNHS. The group of Class of 1961 that attended the tour of the school building gathered for this moment in Saunders Stadium for a photo opportunity. You have already posted this photo, and this is from a different angle. This should bring back a few

This historical marker marks the beach where practice for the D-Day landing in France took place. It is located in Carabelle, Florida. It was an Army camp during World War II.

From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA - 07/09/06 - "Great Article on Kwanzaa??":

Dear Carol,

Can email get lost? I don't remember sending that email, but if I did, it had to be in like 2005.

Joe Drewry

P.S. BTW, your article on Kwanzaa was very well done.

Why yes, indeed, Honey, they can and do get lost.  I just don't understand how or why they do it, and where in cyberspace they hide in the interim, and above all, how or why they mysteriously reappear!

This one was particularly perplexing.  It bore a current date, rather than the real one.  One thing really puzzled me.  I know from looking at my stats that people do go back and read (or reread) the earlier Newsletters.  But for the life of me, I couldn't understand why the Daily Press would be running a feature article on Kwanzaa in July!

But I'm glad you liked the article!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/10/06 - "Website valuable to TYPHOON
Alumni":

Hi, Carol:
For 45 years the NNHS Class of 1961 made unsuccessful attempts to locate    Jim Elliott ('61) of Alaska. He found the announcement regarding the Class of 1961 Reunion this past weekend by reading it on your website.

That has got to thrill you. The use of my latest nickname "Adonis" by several subscribers lead Jim to introduce himself to me during a gathering. What a pleasant surprise. He has been living in Alaska since graduating from college and his lifelong endeavor has been in the field of education in Alaska.
Great work, Carol!!!

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Oh, my goodness!  That does give me a thrill, Joe!  Jim has been with us from some time now, but I didn't realize he hadn't been with them.  If I've played any part in reconnecting old friends, then perhaps my life has not been in vain after all.

Thank you, Sweet Adonis!  I needed that!

From Jennie Sheppard ('62) of NC - 07/10/06 - "Lettuce Warning (Not a Joke)":

This is absolutely "no joke";  I saw a report on this on my local news just a few days ago.

Jen

Be sure you read all of the info on the MSNBC listed at the bottom.

Be sure you click on the MSNBC link at the end. This is scary and it is NOT a joke!

For all you salad eaters...pass this along...

Did you watch Dateline on Sunday evening?  They did a documentary on cut-up lettuce and spinach in plastic bags.  They took us through the whole process and talked about Ecoli now that is showing up in the salad mix in bags.  They don't know yet how the Ecoli got in, but they do know deaths and serious sicknesses are occurring in many states.  One woman told about how her child was near death from the lettuce and was sick for a long time.  They warned us not to buy any until they find out from investigation what is causing this.  The Dole Company has recalled their bags.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12536902/

Personally, I always chop and prepare my salads myself, but it just goes to show you.  Roseanne Roseannadanna was right.

   "It's always something!"

   Thanks, Jennie!   Y'all stay well!

You Won't See Me

Words and Music by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, 1965

(The Beatles)

When I call you up
Your line's engaged
I have had enough
So act your age
We have lost the time
that was so hard to find
And I will lose my mind
If you won't see me
you won't see me

I don't know why
you should want to hide
But I can't get through
My hands are tied
I won't want to stay
I don't have much to say
But I can't turn away
And you won't see me
you won't see me

Time after time
You refuse to even listen
I wouldn't mind
If I knew what I was missing

Though the days are few
They're filled with tears
And since I lost you
It feels like years
Yes, it seems so long
Girl, since you've been gone
And I just can't go on
If you won't see me
you won't see me

Time after time
You refuse to even listen
I wouldn't mind
If I knew what I was missing

Though the days are few
They're filled with tears
And since I lost you
It feels like years
Yes, it seems so long
Girl, since you've been gone
And I just can't go on
If you won't see me
you won't see me
