NEWPORT NEWS - Ruth Scott Burroughs, 98, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017.

Ruth was born June 8, 1919 to Donald and Virginia Scott of Norfolk, VA. Ruth was the beloved wife of Byron "Bobby" Burroughs of Newport News for 69 years. Bobby preceded her in death in 2007.

She was always so proud of her great grandchildren Josh Parker, Indy and Bayden Burroughs, CJ and Sydney Kannan, and Jackson Andreev.

Ruth's family is especially appreciative for the care she received from the TPMG hospice nurses Melodie and Ashley, and especially grateful for her loving and gentle caregivers Gayle, Del, Dean, Laura, Gloria and Aleesha, all of whom helped make her final days comfortable and peaceful.

Ruth was loved and will be missed and remembered by all who knew her.

Ruth's family will be receiving visitors at the Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News on Friday, August 11 from 5pm to 630pm.

Ruth, Mimi, was always a class act in appearance, presence and personality. We frequently hear people say that they want to age gracefully - Ruth epitomized that adage exactly. Our love to all of the Burroughs clan. It is times such as these that we regret the distance separation. Rest in peace, Mimi, and hugs to all of the family.

Lead, Kindly Light

Lyrics by John Henry Newman, 1833
Music by John B. Dykes, 1865

Lead, kindly Light, amid th’encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!

So long Thy power hath blessed me, sure it will,
Will lead me on.
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone,
And with the morn those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile!

Meantime, along the narrow rugged path,
Thyself hast trod,
Lead, Savior, lead me home in childlike faith,
Home to my God.
To rest forever after earthly strife
In the calm light of everlasting life.
