   From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 07/04/07 - "Earning A Desk":

I really can not think of anything to add...

Jerry Blanchard (62) of Va.

Earning A Desk

confirmed by snopes.com: http://www.snopes.com/glurge/nodesks.asp

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she took all of the desks out of the classroom. The kids came into first period, they walked in, there were no desks. They obviously looked around and said, "Ms. Cothren, where's our desk?"

And she said, "You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn them."

They thought, "Well, maybe it's our grades."

"No," she said.

"Maybe it's our behavior."

And she told them, "No, it's not even your behavior."

And so they came and went in the first period, still no desks in the classroom. Second period, same thing, third period, same. By early afternoon television news crews had gathered in Ms. Cothren's class to find out about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of the classroom. The last period of the day, Martha Cothren gathered her class. They were at this time sitting on the floor around the sides of the room. And she says, "Throughout the day no one has really understood how you earn the desks that sit in this classroom ordinarily." She said, "Now, I'm going to tell you."

Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it, and as she did 27 U.S. veterans, wearing their uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. And they placed those school desks in rows, and then they stood along the wall. And by the time they had finished placing those desks, those kids for the first time I think perhaps in their lives understood how they got those desks.

Martha said, "You don't have to earn those desks. These guys did it for you. They put them out there for you, but it's up to you to sit here responsibly to learn, to be good students and good citizens, because they paid a price for you to have that desk, and don't ever forget it."

My friend, I think sometimes we forget that the freedoms that we have are freedoms not because of celebrities. The freedoms are because of ordinary people who did extraordinary things, who loved this country more than life itself, and who not only earned a school desk for a kid at the Robinson High School in Little Rock, but who earned a seat for you and me to enjoy this great land we call home, this wonderful nation that we better love enough to protect and preserve with the kind of conservative, solid values and principles that made us a great nation.

"We live in the Land of the Free because of the "BRAVE".

Remember our Troops

What a wonderful lesson this is!  Thanks so much for sharing it, Sweetie!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 07/05/07 - "Summertime":

Hi, Carol:

Well, once again you are carrying out the role of "TYPHOON Nation Conduit" with outstanding results.

What a wonderful surprise to hear from
Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard ('58) of NC. Her ears must have been burning after all those messages back and forth about the Palace Theatre page in Our Old Stomping Grounds. She sure brought a touch of class to Washington Avenue when she was on duty selling tickets.

You are doing a fine job with the website, and it is very much appreciated. I just loved the "Kentucky Ten Commandants" as well as the gracious witness of Sepi in her recent electronic message.

Thanks, Joe!  Isn't it delightful to have her with us now?!?

Thankfully no one was injured during the fireworks demonstration at Treasure Island near St. Petersburg last evening when the stock of explosives was ignited while still on the ground. Seems housekeeping was not the strongest skill of the crew, and they experienced a "premature ignition" that blew out windows in a nearby hotel. Can you just imagine the surprise and amazement of the guest. No extra charge for all the excitement. This one was almost as good as the "Hang Chads" to promote the image of Flori...duhh.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

YOWZERONI-RINI!!! That was "prolly" not the celebration excitement everyone was anticipating!

Thanks again, Adonis! It's always a joy to hear from you!

From Al Simms ('60) of VA - 07/05/07:

Carol,
In a little while I am going to send you another email that I am sending a bunch of people that gives an overview of a visit that Lois and I made to the new USMC museum at Quantico, VA. There are 28 photos attached in the attached zip file from the 162 that I took while there that will give you an idea of what it is like.

Knowing your interest in things military I thought that you would enjoy seeing the photos and description. It has nothing to do with NNHS but if you are so inclined you might want to do a newsletter or something for those of the classes who were in one of the places or in the USMC. It is a worthwhile place to visit if you are in the area. Plan at least a day and even with a full day you will not see it all in detail - It is big and there is a whole lot of history in it. I have reduced the photos to 800x600 from the original 3264 x 2448 that my camera takes.
Al Simms
Class of 1960

Thanks so much, Al! That'll be super!!! And the 800 x 600 size is perfect for my needs - and will save me a great deal of hassle!  And I wouldn't worry that it doesn't exactly direct link to the concept of a strictly Newport News High School page.  We've been stretching our boundaries for at least the last four years - which brings us to the remarkable place we find ourselves today.  And I already know exactly how and where I can attach it - and justify its inclusion to the extent that its absence would be a neglectful, unthinkable reproach!

We'll be looking forward to it!

From Paul Dobie ('66) of CO and DC - 07/05/07 - "Another fine newsletter…..":

Carol,

Thanks again for being the great reporter that you are. I have a song request unless you have already played it this year. “Let’s Hang On” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons – 1965…I guess I am a little nostalgic…I remember the girl I sat in Antine's with while this played on the jukebox… Ah, the 60’s…

Thank you, Paul! No, we've never used "Let's Hang On", but I've located both the midi file and the lyrics, and we will be using it quite shortly - just behind the three or four other "Summer" themes.  Thanks for the suggestion!!

I visited the Vietnam memorial Sunday along with the Korean memorial, WWII and WWI and the Lincoln memorials. Lincoln is my all time favorite President and his leadership principles have always guided me. I guess I am one of the lucky guys after being in Vietnam in 1970 and then spending time in Iraq (2003) and Afghanistan (2005-2006). I believe so much in what this country stands for. Nothing makes you appreciate life more than visiting the memorials, having experienced third world countries and to know that there are friends out there like the Typhoon family for all of us.

I really appreciate that beautiful testimonial, Sweetie!  It's a bit redundant for me to add that our nation is what it is because of men like you, but I'll do it anyway.  Thank you for your amazing record of service!

It was nice to see messages from    Randy Tate ('66 - of DE) and    Joe Wingo ('65 - of NC) and others; and just think without you (I think there is a song somewhere about that) it would not have been possible or even likely to have occurred. I often wondered where all the girls have gone, but with your website I know they are still out there.

I hope all had a great 4th and may the second half of 2007 be even greater…

Paul

Paul Sweetie, you continue to make my eyes water and my throat catch! I am so blessed to be able to do what I do, if for no other reason than to reconnect with all of you fine, wonderful, funny, amazing, kooky, outstanding, joyful, absolutely delightful people - in a way which I would never have dreamed possible!  Take care, Blue Eyes!

From the President of the Class of 1965, Joe Wingo of NC - 07/05/07:

Hi Carol,

Hope all is good with you and yours.

I wanted to mention to
Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65 - of VA) that I know some churches here will video their services for those unable to attend. Her mom might feel more like she was actually there that way? And, her mom’s friends could also send her a more personal message that way as well. Joyce may have explored this already but thought I’d mention it. My mother also had congestive heart failure, so I sincerely empathize. And Joyce, you may certainly add my name to your prayer circle. From my own personal experience, I know it works!!

Take care and God Bless All,

Joe

Thank you, Joe! I forwarded your note to Joyce yesterday so she wouldn't have to wait. I had forgotten all about that possibility.  The churches in IL near where we used to live also had this feature.  Whenever I was ill and could not attend my own church, I used to tune in the the local access channel and watch several of them.  Of course, I must admit, I generally spent most of my time trying to spot my friends in the congregations!

Thanks again, Sweetie! Prayers are always appreciated!

From Evelyn Fryer Fish ('58) of TX - 07/05/07 - "BEACH TIME - Buckroe - Canepa Cottage Birthday Party on Saturday, Sep 29":

BEACH TIME - Buckroe - Canepa Cottage Birthday Party on Saturday, Sep 29 @ 2:00 pm until ??

Hi Everyone!!!!

It is that time again!! Dick and I will be at the Canepa Cottage from mid-Sep thru mid-Oct 13 and we look forward to seeing you ----------- the Welcome Mat is always out during the entire month - please feel free to stop by at any time.

If you call anytime during the month and you do not get an answer, we could be on the Glider on the Back Deck or I might be reading a book at the water's edge, so remember to call me on my Cell Phone: 817-845-1824. If you knock on the front door and you do not get an answer, please walk around back and see if we are there.

If during the month or at the Party and you would like to sit on the beach and visit, please bring sand chair/s.

As we did last year - it is time to "gather" again. To celebrate yet another year and to remember those we have lost since last year. We will all truly miss the smile and joyful conversations with our dear friend - Tommy Haskins.

The Birthday Party will be on Saturday, September 29th from 2pm until ???????? The only Birthday Gift that you need to bring (in addition to yourself and sunshine) is something to eat OR drink if you prefer something different than Wine, Beer and Soft Drinks - which we will furnish.

AGAIN, This year, please PARK past the Cottage turning at the SECOND LEFT into the condos area where there is a vacant parking lot. If you are too tired and cannot make the walk up to the cottage, call me on my Cell and I will come and pick you up. The parking spaces in the front of the house are for The Owner, The Renters on The First and Second Floor, Disabled Guests, previous Mystery Guests, Current Mystery Guest/s, and Overnighters.

Look forward to seeing each of you.

Love, Evelyn

Thank you, Evelyn! I just made your new page:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/09-29-07-EVELYNS-PARTY.html - brand new page!

It's available directly from the Site Map, and also links to your page from last year:

Evelyn Fryer Fish's Birthday Party for All of Us - 09/29/07

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/SITE-MAP.html

     http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/09-30-06-EVELYNS-PARTY.html

Every now and then, I realize that I've made myself some silly "rule" which I think must be obeyed.  Usually they make no sense whatsoever, so I try to amend them as soon as that light dawns upon me.  So the Birthday Party can now be found posted both on the main index page, as well as from the Reunion Page:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/

     http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/reunion-page.html

Reunions just don't get to be more surprising or all-encompassing than that one, do they?  And surely it ranks with the best on the Fun Scale!

And in the same vein, I added the Class of 1955 Lunch Bunch to both places:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/

     http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/reunion-page.html

   Thanks again, Evelyn!

From Evelyn Fryer Fish ('58) of TX - 07/05/07:

Hi Carol,

I was so delighted to learn that you had heard from
Dimples (Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard - '58 - of NC). I immediately emailed her and extended her a special invitation to the Birthday Party.

Just to let you know, she was and I am sure still is one of the Most Beautiful women I have ever known.

Thanks, lv, ev

Oh, GOODY!!!  I do believe she's definitely planning to be there!  She's so looking forward to seeing you again!  She told me she had known you ever since you first got off that boat from Northern Ireland

Y'all did read that account of Evelyn's which was liked to the last Newsletter, didn't you:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/07-04-07-NNHS-Happy-Independence-Day.html

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/Fourth-July.html - near the bottom of the page

And yes, I'm quite sure she's still beautiful today - as are you yourself!

In that Newsletter, I neglected to say a few things which Sepi told me.  One was that she began modeling at the age of 12.  Some of you probably already knew that.  I did not, but I wasn't in the least bit surprised.  She did tell me quite a few things about her wonderfully exciting life since we last knew of her.  Some of them were quite funny, such as, "Never a Bridesmaid, Always a Bride."

I'll let her tell you the others when you met again in September.....

She also wanted me to let y'all know she's still a size 6 - SIX!!! - but we still love her anyway!

   Thanks so much, Ev!

IMPORTANT REPEATS:

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 07/03/07 - "Call for prayer":

Dear Carol,

I want to request the prayers of all classmates for my mother. She is Virginia Lawrence and has lived in the Newport News and Hampton area for 50 years and retired from Coats&Clark Zipper Factory many years ago. Mom is presently in Riverside Hospital in Newport News. Mom is 91 and has congestive heart failure, atrial-fib and was admitted to Riverside Saturday night with pneumonia. She has many other complications which I can't even begin to spell much less pronounce. Until just last month she was able to live on her own at home but she has had to go live with my older sister.....

She has a deep love of God but has not been able to attend her church, Bethel Baptist, and misses being in contact with long time friends at church. They call her and visit her, but to all those who know the joy of attending church and communing with fellow believers in God, it's just not the same....

..... I know she needs all the prayers she can get.... Thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Your classmate,

Joyce Cahoon

Why, certainly, Joyce! We have some mighty prayer warriors in our midst, and I'm sure that they will be glad to join us in praying for your mama - and for you.  Thanks for letting us know!

From Karrin Williams Frankie (Warwick HS - '61) of VA - 06/26/07 - "Calling all Riverside Hospital Graduates":

I just received this email from a high school classmate to pass on. Please pass onto anyone you think might be a nurse or knows someone so they can have a great reunion. With so many people moving or getting married or re-married after graduation, it is hard to find everyone and emailing is a wonderful tool.

Thanks.

Karrin,

I know you have access to other classes besides our own. We are trying to let as many people know about our reunion as possible. Please forward this if it is not too much trouble.

Riverside School of Professional Nursing is having a Grand Reunion of all classes July 21 and July 22, 2007. There will be a luncheon on Saturday and a tour of the new school campus. Saturday night is open for the individual classes to meet. Sunday there will be a family picnic in NN Park, Jefferson Avenue near Ft. Eustis.

If you are a graduate or know someone who is, please help us get the word out so as many as possible will know and be able to attend. e-mail response or questions to:

rspnalumni@widowmaker.com

You can also e-mail me.
Judy Ring Whitehead
