Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   I am deeply distressed to bring you more sad news today. Former favorite
 Newport News High School teacher   Virginia Stidman Masters passed away in Newport News on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the age of 93.

   Her husband, Charles Masters, predeceased her in 2011.

   Oh, thank you, Greg. I was trying so very hard to pretend that this was surely some other Virginia Masters, but that's really not working for me now.

  From Me ('65) of NC - 06/20/17:

     When I attended the 40-Year Reunion of the Class of 1966 in the fall of 2006 (was that really almost eleven years ago?), I was honored to sit at the Head Table with Mrs. Masters,   Mr. Jim Loving, and his wife, June Lyon Loving. We had a most delightful evening as this image clearly shows.

   I think of them all quite often.

May you Rest In Peace, Mrs. Masters. Although it has been fifty years ago, I remember your gym classes as if they were yesterday. Love and respect always.

REMEMBRANCES COLLECTED FROM FACEBOOK:

    From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 06/18/17, 6:52 PM AND 06/19/17, 4:28 PM:

My first homeroom teacher--a wonderful lady!!

The brevity of this wonderful person's obituary indicates that she outlived the majority of her relatives--close ones. There is much more to her than is posted!!

I only knew her at NNHS and as a homeroom teacher--but I knew the nice and caring person she was in just that brief daily encounter. The girls that had her as a gym teacher would know more than I do!! I do know she was much more than a note in the paper.

  From Christine Wilson Starkman ('68) of CA - 06/18/17, 7:15 PM:

Our gym teacher--she was great! RIP, Mrs. Masters.

 From Maureen O'Brien Lowder ('68) of VA - 06/18/17, 7:29 PM:

She was a great gym teacher.

  From Brenda Shepard McCoy ('67) of VA - 06/18/17, 8:31 PM:

She was a sweet lady, plus my height!

  From Jeannie Collier Fitzgerald ('65) of VA - 06/19/17, 5:49 PM:

Mine, too, Brenda!

  From Barbara Brotzman Stover ('68) of NJ - 06/18/17, 9:12 PM:

Remember her well... RIP to a great lady.

 From Robbie Shields Stowe ('68) of VA - 06/18/17, 9:46 PM:

My first homeroom teacher. Great Lady! Loved her!

  From Eva Ellis Madagan ('61) of FL - 06/19/17, 10:50 AM:

A very special lady. I had the privilege of being her school secretary at NNHS 1961.

From Carolyn Simpson Knight ('56) of VA - 06/19/17, 11:06 AM:

Wonderful memories and a great mentor to all the girls in gym classes. Miss Virginia Stidman and Miss Lillian Seats were quite a pair. Neither accepted the word "can't" no matter what we were doing. Later Miss Stidman married and became Mrs. Masters. She was little, but she was mighty!! Prayers are with her family. She is definitely part of my NNHS memories.

 From Cookie Phillips Tyndall ('64) of VA - 06/20/17:

So wonderful to see she lived to 93. The last time I saw her several years back, she was undergoing chemo. And, yes, I agree her obituary should be pages long.

From Diane Sandler Marcus Marks ('69) of MD - 06/19/17, 4:32 PM (but hiding in my email until late 06/23/17):

Carol,

Just to let you know,
  Mrs. Masters passed away on June 14. She was 93.

   Thank you so much, Diane. Had I located this and rescued it from its secret hiding place sooner, I could have posted Mrs. Masters' Memorial Edition a day earlier.

  Y'all take good care of each other!  TYPHOONS FOREVER! We'll Always Have Buckroe!

                          Love to all, Carol

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Words by Walter C. Smith, 1876
Music (St. Denio) by John Roberts, 1839

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
But of all Thy rich graces this grace, Lord, impart
Take the veil from our faces, the vile from our heart.

All laud we would render; O help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee,
And so let Thy glory, Almighty, impart,
Through Christ in His story, Thy Christ to the heart.
