06/17/19 - NNHS Newsletter - That's Amore

“L'amore vero è così: non ha nessuno scopo e nessuna ragione,
e non si sottomette a nessun potere fuorché alla grazia umana.”

(“True love is this: it has no purpose and no reason,
and it does not submit to any power except to human grace.”)

- Elsa Morante, L'isola di Arturo
 (18 Aug 1912 - 25 Nov 1985)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This 1953 hit was a childhood favorite of mine.

BONUS - That's Amore - Dean Martin, 1956

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/That%27s_Amore

"That's Amore" is a 1953 song by composer Harry Warren[1] and lyricist Jack Brooks.[1] It became a major hit and signature song for Dean Martin in 1953. Amore (pronounced [aˈmoːre]) means "love" in Italian.

The song first appeared in the soundtrack of the Martin and Lewis comedy film The Caddy, released by Paramount Pictures on August 10, 1953. In the film, the song is performed mainly by Dean Martin, with Jerry Lewis joining in and then followed by the other characters in the scene. It received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song of that year, but it lost to "Secret Love" from Calamity Jane starring Doris Day.[1]

The track that was used for the single released by Capitol Records was recorded on August 13, 1953, (Session 3098; Master 11694-6), with the orchestra conducted by Dick Stabile, at Capitol Records' studios at 5505 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, California. On November 7, 1953, Martin's record of the song, with "You're the Right One" (which was recorded at the same session as "That's Amore") on the flip side, peaked at #2 on the Billboard charts. The song was kept from the #1 spot when Les Paul and Mary Ford's Capitol Records single "Vaya Con Dios" returned to the #1 spot after being knocked out by Stan Freberg's Capitol Records single "St. George and the Dragonet", which had been #1 for the previous four weeks, after "Vaya Con Dios" had been #1 for the nine previous weeks.[citation needed]

The song remains closely identified with Dean Martin. That's Amore was used as the title for a 2001 video retrospective of Martin's career; and his son, Ricci Martin, titled his 2002 biography That's Amore: A Son Remembers Dean Martin.[2] As an iconic song, "That's Amore" remains a secondary signature song...

From My Friend, Susan, of NC - 06/15/15:

“Often the answer to our prayer does not come while we’re on our knees but while we’re on our feet serving the Lord and serving those around us. Selfless acts of service and consecration refine our spirits remove the scales from our spiritual eyes and open the windows of heaven. By becoming the answer to someone’s prayer we often find the answer to our own.

  From Jimmy Dick ('65) of FL - 06/17/19, @ 11:55 AM:

Well, the good news is that I've got things up and running enough to post, but I still have some issue to work on. It was the glitch that became a computer bomb and I can't figure out what caused it but I'm finding ways to correct it. I know enough to be dangerous but also cautious and I have someone who is also very helpful in correcting the problem. So, it was a different kind of Monday morning and I'll be writing a blog about computers today. I find that writing out my frustrations is sometimes good medicine and these things happen to the best of us at some time or other. But I hope God is blessing you all today and that wherever you go, you remember to be kind and wear a smile. Here's a morning picture just before the afternoon arrives.

      Thank you, Jimmy!

From My Cousin, Jim Atkinson (John Randolph Tucker HS - '77) of AZ, Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Coordinator at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - 06/13/19, 7:59 PM:

Following a long and difficult stalk across a Chevron lot in Mesquite, Nevada AND, from the safety of a nearby fuel island, I finally got within range of a small herd of endangered pay phones warming in the late afternoon sun. A rare photo opportunity ensued

Thanks, Jim, a rare sight, indeed!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 06/16/17:

A guy walked into a restaurant with a small dog. The waiter said, "Sir, I'm very sorry, but we don't allow dogs in here."

The man replied, "But this isn't just any dog ... this dog can play the piano!"

The waiter responded, "Well, if he can play that piano, you both can stay and have a meal on the house!"

So the guy sat the dog on the piano stool, and the dog stared playing - Ragtime, Mozart ... and the waiter and patrons were enjoying the music.

Suddenly a bigger dog ran in, grabbed the small dog by the scruff of the neck, and dragged him out.

The waiter asked the man, "What was that all about?"

The guy said, "Oh, that was his mother. She wanted him to be a doctor."

That's Amore

Music by
Harry Warren (24 Dec 1893 – 22 Sept 1981)

Lyrics by Jack Brooks (14 Feb 1912 – 08 Nov0 1971), 1953

(In Napoli where love is king
When boy meets girl here's what they say)

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That's amore
When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine
That's amore
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you'll sing "Vita bella"
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella

When the stars make you drool just like a pasta e fasule
That's amore
When you dance down the street with a cloud at your feet
You're in love
When you walk in a dream but you know you're not dreaming, signore
Scusa mi, but you see, back in old Napoli
That's amore

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie
That's amore (That's amore)
When the world seems to shine like you've had too much wine
That's amore (That's amore)
Bells will ring ting-a-ling-a-ling, ting-a-ling-a-ling
And you'll sing "Vita bella" (Vita bell—Vita bella)
Hearts will play tippy-tippy-tay, tippy-tippy-tay
Like a gay tarantella (lucky fella)

When the stars make you drool just like a pasta e fasule
That's amore (That's amore)
When you dance down the street with a cloud at your feet
You're in love
When you walk in a dream but you know you're not dreaming, signore
Scusa mi, but you see, back in old Napoli
That's amore (amore)
That's amore
