|"O mein Papa" is a German song, as related by a young woman
remembering her beloved, once-famous
father. It was written by Swiss composer
Paul Burkhard in 1939 for the
musical Der Schwarze Hecht (The Black Pike),
reproduced in 1950 as
Feuerwerk (Fireworks) to a
Erik Charell, Jürg Amstein, and
Robert Gilbert. In 1954, that musical was turned into the film
It was adapted into English by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons under the title "Oh! My Pa-Pa". A recording by Eddie Fisher with Hugo Winterhalter's orchestra & chorus was made at Webster Hall, New York City, on December 12, 1953. It was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog number 20-5552 (in USA) and by EMI on the His Master's Voice label as catalog number B 10614.
Fisher's recording became a
on the U.S.
Billboard charts in 1954. Fisher's version also made the UK Top 10;
thus, in the UK, Calvert's version was number one while Fisher's made
the top 10, but missed the top spot, and in the U.S., the opposite
occurred. Calvert's version has a further claim to fame as the first UK
number one to be recorded at the most successful of all British
The song returned to Abbey Road when
Brian Fahey conducted an instrumental version in the summer of 1960
to be used as a backing track for
Connie Francis' English-Yiddish recording for her album
Connie Francis Sings Jewish Favorites. Francis
overdubbed her vocals in Hollywood. In June 1966, Francis overdubbed
the same the playback once more, this time with the original German
lyrics for her German concept album

From Me ('65) of NC - 06/14/14 - "My Favorite Father's Day":
|This photograph was
taken on the morning of our most memorable Father's Day. It was actually
the last one with all seven of our children at home; Lewis was married
four-and-a-half months later.
Our family was asked to give all the talks in church that morning. As a surprise gift to Paul, I arranged to have the children sing the interlude hymn, "Love Is Spoken Here" (push here to listen and see the lyrics). It is a lovely song, sung first through in unison, then splitting into two-part counterpoint. They started off beautifully, with Lewis' rich baritone voice leading Brent and Randolph on one part, the three youngest boys on the other part, and Adrienne looking adorable, snuggling in Lewis' arms.
As the song progressed, Lewis began to choke up. One by one, remarkably in descending age order, each boy followed suit (along with most of the congregation). If there was a dry eye left in the chapel, it surely fell victim as well, when at the song's end, sweet little Adrienne, as if on cue, leaned over and kissed Lewis gently on the cheek. It was a beautiful, spiritual moment ~ the best present we could have given their father.
|Father's Day, June 17, 1990 - Taylor Springs, IL|
Brent - age
18; Paul - almost 47; Adrienne - almost 3;
Randolph - age 16; Nathaniel - age 10;

From My #5 Son, Nathaniel Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '97) of IL - 06/14/14 - "Today's Route 66 10K Race":
|I finished in 53:32 which put me 19th in place
in my age group. That's 8 minutes, 37 seconds per mile. Not horrible for
an old fat guy. Guess there were more / faster runners in my group this
year. Last year my time would have placed me at 9th..... (That's
me - #230.)
So, I was 145 out of 458,
and 19 out of 31 in my age group (Male 30 to 34). Could have been worse. Oh, but only
two 34 year old males had better times. So, in a way, I finished 3. Haha.
WOWZERONI! That's fabulous, Nathaniel! Congratulations (and you haven't been a "fat guy" for a while!)!

From www.ajokeaday.com - 06/14/14:
|A young man bought an expensive piece of
jewelry as a present for his girlfriend.
“Don’t you want her name engraved on it?” asked the clerk.
The young man thought for a moment, and then, ever the realistic, steadfastly replied, “No, just engrave it: 'To My One and Only Love'. That way, if we break up and she throws it back to me in anger, I can use it again.”

Oh My Pa-PaMusic by Paul Burkhard for a 1939 musical called Der Schwarze Hecht - Reproduced in 1950 as Feuerwerk (Fireworks)
|Oh Mein Papa||Oh My Pa-pa|
Papa wie ein Pfeil
sprang hinauf auf die Seil,
eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp.
Er spreizte die Beine
ganz breit auseinand’,
sprang hoch in die Luft
und steht auf die Hand
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp.
Oh, mein Papa war eine wunderbare
Er lachte: “Haha, haha”
Ei, wie er lacht, sein Mund,
sie sein so breit und rot
Er ritt auf die Seil
Oh, my Papa, to me he was so
Oh, my Papa, to me he was so good.
No one could be so gentle and so lovable,
Oh, my Papa, he always understood.
Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he'd change my tears to laughter.
Oh, my Papa, so funny, so
