06/14/08 - NNHS Newsletter - Flag Day

"The flag of the United States has not been created by rhetorical
sentences in declarations of independence and in bills of rights.
It has been created by the experience of a great people,
and nothing is written upon it that has not been written by their life.
It is the embodiment, not of a sentiment, but of a history"

Woodrow Wilson
(28 Dec 1856 - 3 Feb 1924)

  Hi, Lady,

Buckley Daniel Harty just arrived about twenty minutes ago at 5:24 AM.  He weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 20 inches long, and has sandy blond hair.   Diana (Lyons Harty - Portsmouth HS, NH / Eastlake HS, CA - '05 - of MA ) is tired, but doing fine. As you can hear (from his beautiful cries), he's doing fine as well.

I'll send pictures and video later.

SUPER-DE-DUPER!!! Thank you, Sweetie-Weetie - and congratulations to all of y'all!

If you're keeping score, this is Dale and Diana's first child, first son, and our tenth grandchild, sixth grandson.

From Me ('65) of NC - 06/14/08 - "Buckley's Blessing Bonnet and Booties":

I finished crocheting these Tuesday.  In retrospect, they probably would have appeared better had I actually photographed them rather than just placing them on the scanner bed.....

As I promised his mama and daddy, they are elaborate but masculine, and cool enough for this hot summer.  I found Karen Gilson's bootie pattern online (appropriately named, "Granny's Love Baby Booties"!), and designed the bonnet myself to coordinate with them:

Instead of yarn, I used white Lustre-Sheen cotton thread and a size D aluminum hook.  Now I just need to begin making his little white blessing suit (which will not be crocheted) - and sew quickly!

Twenty-four years ago, I designed and crocheted Dale's blessing suit, bonnet and booties of sport weight white yarn, but as we were between blizzards, the nice warmth it afforded was a good thing!

He was born on Wednesday, January 4, 1984 in St. Louis.  He wasn't expected until January 10, but there was that blizzard thing, and we were an hour away from the hospital, so all the plans changed.  I had thought he would not be blessed until the first Sunday in February, and I hadn't made his bonnet yet, so I awoke in the middle of the night and crocheted it before morning while he slept in my lap in bed.  New mamas aren't supposed to get any sleep anyway.

Look at that sweet little baby!  Wasn't that only yesterday?!?

Sunday, January 8, 1984 -
Hillsboro, MO
Dale Hampton Harty -
three-and-a-half days old

This is a big day for our family.          My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of OH married his sweet   Bethany (Winona Harty - Siuslaw HS, OR - '94) of OH twelve years ago today! CONGRATULATIONS to y'all, too!

From My Niece Shari of VA - 06/13/08:

I am in pretty bad shape. It was not another tooth or bone growth bone growth, but instead exposed jaw bone. I now not only have a removed tooth, but also a very large hole in the roof of my mouth. A piece of bone was sent off to be biopsied. I so hope this ended it, but I may need more radical surgery.
On very high dose antibiotic and more Percocet and Advil and ice packs when I have the time. Nothing really works for the pain, but it takes the edge of the sharp constant pain, as quite a bit of the bone had to be cut, then filed away. I was so frustrated I almost  "removed"  it myself. The only good thing is the appointment was free and a pastor I really barely know and from another church attended me and insisted I get proper treatment.
I thank you for your thoughts and prayers. The hole in the roof of my mouth can not be closed up for 2 weeks to allow any remaining infection to move in the opposite direction, instead of up...yuck!  I started massive dosages of Vitamin C, garlic and cayenne pepper and then will have my heart tested for damage in a few months. Please heed my warning, because this has been an excruciating thing to go through..... I am most weak and in agony.
                                                 Have a nice week!,

   YOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI! We'll keep praying, Shari!

From Paul Dobie ('66) of CO - 06/12/08:

From Bill Sasser (Hampton HS - '61) of VA - 06/13/08 - "You Tube":

A couple of years ago, you listed a video of the history of Hampton Roads that I did under Crabbermart.

I have put an a few edited versions of it on Youtube. It has had a number of hits. Thought your folks might enjoy seeing the glory days of my hometown. I went to John W. Daniel but moved to Hampton when I was in the 6th grade.

You're a Grand Old Flag

- George M. Cohan
(3 July 1878 - 5 Nov 1942)

You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
