06/03/18 - NNHS Newsletter - World Bicycle Day

“Life is like riding a bicycle. In order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.”

- Albert Einstein
(14 Mar 1879 - 18 Apr1955)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We've never observed this day before, because it's never happened before! Today is the very first World Bicycle Day! How exciting!

BONUS - Bicycle Race - Queen (original censored version)

"Bicycle Race" is a single by the British rock band Queen. It was released on their 1978 album Jazz and written by Queen's frontman Freddie Mercury. It was released as a double A-side single together with the song "Fat Bottomed Girls". The song is notable for its video featuring a bicycle race with nude women at Wimbledon Stadium, which was edited or even banned in several countries.

The song was written by Mercury and was inspired by watching the 18th stage of the 1978 Tour de France passing Montreux, where the band were recording Jazz in the Mountain Studios.[1][2] It starts with a chorus unaccompanied by instruments. The chorus is followed by two verses connected with a bridge, both followed by a chorus. Around the middle of the song is a solo played with numerous bicycle bells. The song has an unusual chord progression with numerous modulations, a change of metre (from 4/4 to 6/8) in the bridge, and multitracked vocal and guitar harmonies.[3]

The lyrics are topical for the time and contain social, political and pop-culture references, such as religion, Vietnam War, Watergate, drugs, fictional characters (Peter Pan, Frankenstein and Superman), and the films Jaws and Star Wars. The song also mentions actor John Wayne. The lyrics also mention the exclamatory interjection "Hot dog!" and the idiom "Cool it, man!"

Brian May has said that the song was not an autobiographical portrait of Mercury and that Mercury did not particularly enjoy bicycling, also noting that despite the lyrics, Mercury was a Star Wars fan...[4]

The World Bicycle Day is on 3 June. It was approved on 12 April 2018 as an official United Nations day of awareness about the multiple societal benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure.[1][2] After the announcement was made, European Cyclists' Federation Secretary General Bernhard Ensink stated, "Cycling is a source for social, economic and environmental benefits – and it is bringing people together. WCA and ECF are extremely happy with this declaration. This UN declaration is an acknowledgement of the contribution of cycling to the Sustainable Development Goals".[2]

Leszek Sibilski led a campaign to promote a UN Resolution for World Bicycle Day, eventually gaining the support of Turkmenistan and 56 other countries.[3] The logo for World Bicycle Day was designed by Isaac Feld and the accompanying animation was done by Professor John E. Swanson.[4][5][6][7] It depicts bicyclists of various types riding around the globe. At the bottom of the logo is the hashtag #June3WorldBicycleDay.[8] The main message is to show that the bicycle belongs to and serves all of humanity.

I am sure there are hundreds of people, if not more, who appreciate what you do for the NNHS alumni. Awhile back you asked the question of whether a certain person (I don’t remember the name) was a member of the class of 1961. Did you get a response to that? And who was it?

Thank you so much for your kind words, Buddy! My question was about Bill Mingee, but no, I never did receive an answer. Fortunately, being the mother of seven children well prepared me for being ignored. The obituary published on 02/22/18 was for a William C. Mingee. "Our" Bill Mingee was born William Critton Mingee, but I've learned to my chagrin never to pronounce people dead before their time.

You are the best—We lost track of Billy a while ago. It seems he is ours. I am going to communicate to our class and see what we get...

I confirmed—he is the one in our class—thanks again.

E.D. "Buddy" David
Oh, Buddy, even though I expected this answer, I'm so sorry to learn it; thank you for the confirmation. You have my sympathies on the loss of your classmate.
Bill and I were both members of Trinity Methodist Church years ago; I remember him as a very fine young man. I finished his Memorial Edition:

  From Richard Dawes (NNHS / HHS - '62) of VA - 06/02/18, 11:55 AM:

Hi, Carol,

It's been awhile since I sent you anything, but came across this obit for Richard Dillaman. I believe he was in NNHS class of 62. Looks like it is about a year old.

Hope the link is good, and you guys are doing well.

God Bless,
Richard Dawes

Oh, no! I'm so sorry to learn this, Dickie, but thank you so much for letting me know.
