06/03/18 - NNHS Newsletter - Bill Mingee

William Critton Mingee
(d. 06 Feb 2018)

Newport News High School Class of 1961

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We have another sad if somewhat belated edition of the NNHS Newsletter today. Bill Mingee, Class of 1961, brother of Beverly Mingee Kenney ('64) and Jimmy Mingee ('66), passed away in Aiden, North Carolina on February 06, 2018.

From the Boy Most Likely to Succeed in the Class of 1961, Buddy David of VA - 06/01/18, 2:46 PM, 06/02/18, 10:21 AM, and 06/03/18, 3:45 PM:

Carol,

I am sure there are hundreds of people, if not more, who appreciate what you do for the NNHS alumni. Awhile back you asked the question of whether a certain person (I don’t remember the name) was a member of the class of 1961. Did you get a response to that? And who was it?

Thank you so much for your kind words, Buddy. My question was about Bill Mingee, but no, I never did receive an answer... The obituary published on 02/22/18 was for a William C. Mingee. "Our" Bill Mingee was born William Critton Mingee, but I've learned to my chagrin never to pronounce people dead before their time.

You are the best—We lost track of Billy a while ago. It seems he is ours. I am going to communicate to our class and see what we get...

I confirmed—he is the one in our class—thanks again.

E.D. "Buddy" David

Oh, Buddy, even though I expected this answer, I'm so sorry to learn it; thank you for the confirmation. You have my sympathies on the loss of your classmate.
Bill and I were both members of Trinity Methodist Church years ago; I remember him as a very fine young man.

Lead, Kindly Light

Lyrics by John Henry Newman, 1833
Music by John B. Dykes, 1865

Lead, kindly Light, amid th’encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!

So long Thy power hath blessed me, sure it will,
Will lead me on.
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone,
And with the morn those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile!

Meantime, along the narrow rugged path,
Thyself hast trod,
Lead, Savior, lead me home in childlike faith,
Home to my God.
To rest forever after earthly strife
In the calm light of everlasting life.
