05/30/18 - NNHS Newsletter - Who Wants to Live Forever?

“We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.”

- Chuck Palahniuk
(b. 21 Feb 1961)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Live forever? Well, no, not in mortality, not I!

BONUS #1 - Who Wants to Live Forever - Queen

BONUS #2 - Who Wants to Live Forever - Seal

BONUS #3 - Who Wants to Live Forever - Sarah Brightman

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Wants_to_Live_Forever:

"Who Wants to Live Forever" is a song by the English rock band Queen. The song is the sixth track on the album A Kind of Magic, released in June 1986, and was written by guitarist Brian May for the soundtrack to the film Highlander, directed by Russell Mulcahy.[1] The song peaked at No 24 in the British charts.

The song is used to frame the scenes in the film where Connor MacLeod must endure his beloved wife Heather growing old and dying while he, as an Immortal, remains forever young. (It was later used in the episodes "The Gathering", "Revenge is Sweet", "The Hunters", "Line of Fire", and "Leader of the Pack" of the Highlander television series.) The song's title is taken from a line in another movie scored by Brian May and Queen, Flash Gordon (the line can be heard on Battle Theme from Queen Flash Gordon soundtrack album)...

Sarah Brightman covered this track on her 1997 album, "Time to say Goodbye"...

150 YEARS AGO TODAY:

May 30, 1868 - Decoration Day (the predecessor of the modern "Memorial Day") was observed in the United States for the first time (by "Commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic" John A. Logan's proclamation on May 5).

THIS DAY IN WWII:

May 30, 1941 - Manolis Glezos and Apostolos Santas climbed on the Athenian Acropolis and tore down the Nazi swastika.

May 30, 1942 - 1000 British bombers launched a 90-minute attack on Cologne, Germany.

May 30, 1943 - The Holocaust: Josef Mengele became chief medical officer of the Zigeunerfamilienlager (Romani family camp) at Auschwitz concentration camp.

May 30, 1958 - Memorial Day: the remains of two unidentified American servicemen, killed in action during World War II and the Korean War respectively, were buried at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

THIS DAY IN 1968:

Wednesday, May 30, 1968 - Charles de Gaulle reappeared publicly after his flight to Baden-Baden, Germany, and dissolved the French National Assembly by a radio appeal. Immediately after, fewer than one million of his supporters marched on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. This was the turning point of May 1968 events in France.

Wednesday, May 30, 1968 - Terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui (زكريا موسوي) was born in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France. On December 11, 2001 he was indicted on six felony charges: conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries, conspiracy to commit aircraft piracy, conspiracy to destroy aircraft, conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiracy to murder United States employees, and conspiracy to destroy property. On May 04, 2006 he was sentenced to life in prison related to the September 11 attacks.

    Thanks so much, Susan!

From Joan Lauterbach Krause ('60) of VA - 05/30/18:

  Thank you, Joan!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 05/29/18:

Someone I know got an email and at the top the salutation was "Happy Memorial Day". Saying "Happy Memorial Day" is about as appropriate as saying "Happy Good Friday". Everyone my age knows someone whose name is on the Vietnam Memorial, also known as "The Wall". It is a day to remember those who gave their lives in the service of their country. Many of us had parents or relatives who died in WWII or Vietnam or more recent conflicts. Yes, we get together with family and friends and have cookouts and gatherings, but if you must give a greeting in recognition then it should be "blessings and peace". You do not know who has lost a family member or dear friend the military.

Thank you so very much, Jean! Hearing this completely insensitive and inappropriate phrase from anyone is as grating as listening to chalk on a blackboard!

From Wayne Agee ('58) of FL - 05/28/18 - The Meaning of the Flag-Draped Coffin:

The Meaning of the Flag-Draped Coffin

Our founding fathers used GOD's word and teachings to establish our Great Nation, and I think it's high time Americans get re-educated about this Nation's history.

Be proud of the country we live in, and even more proud of those who serve to protect our 'GOD-GIVEN' rights and freedoms. I hope you take the time to read this ...

Here is how to understand the flag laid upon a soldiers casket and surrendered to so many widows and widowers: At military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776.

Have you ever noticed that the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!

The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.

The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life.

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world.

The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.

The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, 'Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.'

The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic.

The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.

The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood and mothers, for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty, and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born.

The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christian's eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit.

The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their Nation's motto, 'In God We Trust.'

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.

There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why.

Please share this with the children you love and all others who love what is referred to as the symbol of "Liberty and Freedom."

   Thanks so much, Wayne!

  Turn off your t.v.
Turn off your cell phone.
Power down your computer.
Turn off your mind chatter.
Sit still and connect to the divine.
Do this for at least ten minutes a day.
You'll be surprised at the guidance that comes through.

Who Wants to Live Forever

Words and music by Brian May
(b. 19 July 1947)

Recorded by Queen, 1986

Covered by Sarah Brightman, 1997
(b. 14 Aug 1960)

There's no time for us
There's no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away
from us

Who wants to live forever

Who wants to live forever....?

There's no chance for us
It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us

Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?

Who dares to love forever?
When love must die

But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today
Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?
Forever is our today

Who waits forever anyway?
