05/30/17 - NNHS Newsletter - Who Wants to Live Forever?

We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.

- Chuck Palahniuk
(b. 21 Feb 1961)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Live forever? Well, no, not in mortality, not I!

BONUS #1 - - Who Wants to Live Forever - Queen

BONUS #2 - - Who Wants to Live Forever - Seal

BONUS #3 - - Who Wants to Live Forever - Sarah Brightman

"Who Wants to Live Forever" is a song by the English rock band Queen. The song is the sixth track on the album A Kind of Magic, released in June 1986, and was written by guitarist Brian May for the soundtrack to the film Highlander, directed by Russell Mulcahy.[1] The song peaked at No 24 in the British charts.

The song is used to frame the scenes in the film where Connor MacLeod must endure his beloved wife Heather growing old and dying while he, as an Immortal, remains forever young. (It was later used in the episodes "The Gathering", "Revenge is Sweet", "The Hunters", "Line of Fire", and "Leader of the Pack" of the Highlander television series.) The song's title is taken from a line in another movie scored by Brian May and Queen, Flash Gordon (the line can be heard on Battle Theme from Queen Flash Gordon soundtrack album)...

Sarah Brightman covered this track on her 1997 album, "Time to say Goodbye"...

From My Friend, Susan, of NC -

On this mortal journey, we must never think that our choices affect only us.

    Thanks so much, Susan!

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of TX (soon to be NC!) - 05/29/17:

On this Memorial Day, this video edit from Band of Brothers done by my brother     Nathaniel (Hillsboro HS, IL - '97 - of IL) several years ago does an excellent job to humbly remind me of those who paid for the freedom, liberty and prosperity for myself, family, friends and countrymen they would never meet with their sacrificed life. Please take a moment and reflect on those who gave all for you and me across the centuries.

Thank you, Brent - and Nathaniel! In my absolutely unbiased opinion, Nathaniel did a phenomenal opinion of editing this video. I think of it often.

From My Fiend, Mike, of MD - 05/29/17:

Thanks to the 29th Division Association and the Veteran Corps, 5th Regiment Infantry for a fantastic Memorial Day ceremony at one of the 13 original National Cemeteries! (Loudon Park National Cemetery, Baltimore, MD)

Thank you so much, Mike! I was grateful you had shared these images even before I read the "fine print". A Richmond native, my   father, the late Robert Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25) (19 Oct 1907 - 25 Apr 1960), served as the Regimental Surgeon for the 116th Infantry of the famed 29th Division during World War II, and as such participated in the first hour of the first wave of the D-Day Invasion on Omaha Beach.

Despite the obvious shrapnel wounds which covered his legs and troubled him the remainder of his life, he liked to say he was one of only two officers in his outfit who was neither killed nor wounded during WWII. My mother maintained he was killed in the war; it just took him 15 years to die.

From My Cousin, Jim Atkinson (John Randolph Tucker HS - '77) of AZ, Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Coordinator at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - 05/29/17:

Anyone else having a day like this? Need one of these every now and then for recuperative purposes.

Thanks, Cousin Jim! That's pretty much my day all day, every day! I'm recuperating from the last forty-eleven years of my life!

I never say what I mean, but I always manage to say something similar.

There's no time for us
There's no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away
from us

Who wants to live forever

Who wants to live forever....?

There's no chance for us
It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us

Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?

Who dares to love forever?
When love must die

But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today
Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?
Forever is our today

Who waits forever anyway?
