05/27/11 - NNHS Newsletter - Book of Love

We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading.

B. F. Skinner
(20 Mar 1904 - 18 Aug 1990)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

How about a Golden Oldie from 1957?

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MW_SKWjrE2U - Book of Love - The Monotones

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_Love_%28song%29:

"The Book of Love" (also titled "(Who Wrote) The Book of Love") was a rock and roll song, originally by The Monotones. It was written by three members of the group, Warren Davis, George Malone and Charles Patrick, and it peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Lead singer Charles Patrick heard a Pepsodent toothpaste commercial with the line "wonder where the yellow went". From there he got the idea for the line, "I wonder, wonder, wonder who, who wrote the book of love", working it up into a song with Davis and Malone. The "boom" part of the song was a result of a kid kicking a ball against the garage while they were rehearsing, it sounded good, so they added it to the song.

In September 1957, the Monotones recorded "The Book Of Love", which was released on the Mascot label in December that year. The small record company could not cope with its popularity, and it was reissued on Chess Records' subsidiary Argo label in February 1958. It attained a Billboard ranking of #5 for pop songs and #3 for R&B in 1958. It also reached #5 in Australia. In the UK, the hit version was a cover by The Mudlarks...

     From Me ('65) of IL - 05/27/11:

This song always reminds me of        my cousin, Cheryl White Wilson (John Marshall HS - '64 - of VA) 'cause we sang the chorus ALL the time during the summer of 1958 ('Member dat, Cheryl?!?).

The history of the song given above reminds me of a commercial jingle              My mama, the late Maxine Frix Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25) (19 May 1908 - 15 Feb 1999) wrote (which was somehow never widely distributed...) a few years before that:

Brush your teeth with Ajax
Brush them every day
It eats off the enamel
And the rest will rot away.

   She was such a hoot!

BATTLIN’ BANKS BADNESS BARELY BEGUN

Gen. Nathaniel Banks humiliation at the hands of Stonewall Jackson had been going on for some time now. Assigned to capture Jackson, Banks had been outthought and out-marched. When Jackson attacked, he was outfought, and lost 2000 of his force of 8000, plus all his supplies and wagons. Banks tried to make a stand at Winchester and lost, then Williamsport and lost again. Today the remains of his force straggled across the Potomac towards Harper’s Ferry. Banks thought they would be safe there, but Jackson was headed that way too.

From Jerry ('65) and    Judy Phillips ('66) Allen of VA - 05/26/11 - "Harris Teeter":

Hey, Everybody!
About that commercial during American Idol last night.....
We missed it, too.  It was on near a Beyonce number.  I had several say they did see it, and some who did not.  Anyway, you can see it by going to www.harristeeter.com.  Look down on the right at the caption Trinity Lutheran School wins $10,000.  You can click on it; the commercial will play. Remember, Josh is the cute nerd with dark glasses.  He is between two girls in the produce dept. picking out oranges.  He also did the singing and drumming for background sound.
Thanks for watching.

Trinity Lutheran School also made the front page of the Daily Press today.

Judy

COOL BEANS! Now we can all watch it! Thanks, Sweetie-Pies!

http://www.dailypress.com/news/education/dp-nws-harris-teeter-jingle-20110525,0,7608052.story

NEWPORT NEWS— A Newport News private school has won Harris Teeter's grand prize - $10,000 - for its version of the grocery chain's jingle.

Trinity Lutheran School was named "overall winner" out of 33 elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide who entered the company's annual "Sing My Jingle" contest. Each school submitted its version of the company's "My Harris Teeter" jingle.

Trinity Lutheran's 29-second entry, posted on the Harris Teeter website, shows 26 elementary-age students singing the jingle as they buzz through the store picking produce, opening freezer doors in sync and sweeping the aisles. The video was shot the Harris Teeter on Warwick Boulevard.

All winners except Trinity Lutheran are in North Carolina, where the chain is headquartered. Prizes of $2,500 were given to a pre-school, an elementary school, a junior high and a high school. A "people's choice" winner received $1,000.

Trinity Lutheran's head of schools, Lynne Fritzinger, said she personally thought the students did a great job but that it was a "very big surprise" to beat out middle and high schools for the top prize. The school will put the $10,000 toward technology upgrades, she said.

From Tricia Matthews Sheene ('72) of VA - 05/26/11 - "I think you are still using old address":

From Bill Hobbs ('66) of Northern VA - 05/26/11 - "Old Pictures":

Didn't know if you had ever seen these?
Bill

Thank you, Bill - 'cause we'll always have Buckroe! Yes, five years ago when they began making the rounds, there were 24 photos; now it seems that there are only 14 in the group. All 24 have been posted here since 01/10/07:

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 05/26/11 - "Fabulous old footage, VJ Day, Honolulu, August 14, 1945":

Dan Coleman ('63 - of NC) sent this my way--it's mostly "The Greatest Generation" <OUR parents> celebrating--in color--the end of the war with Japan-- where it all started. You have to start the video, it doesn't start automatically.

VJ Day, Honolulu Hawaii, August 14, 1945 on Vimeo

Take a look at this video...absolutely fabulous!

Notice the cars and jeeps, youth, etc., the guys in khaki or gray shirts and black ties are Navy officers or chiefs....the rest are Army or Marine.

How young they all were to do what they did.

This guy really captured a moment in history! (You can listen to Jimmy Durante singing in the background, too.)

This is a super video of a time past -- we need to remember and be THANKFUL.

Check out the color fidelity. It's not bad for 1945 - nothing will ever compare with Kodachrome film.

VID...WW2 VICTORY PARADE OVER JAPAN

WOWZERONI!!! Thank you so much, Wayne Honey - and Danny!

From Jerry ('65) and    Judy Phillips ('66) Allen of VA - 05/26/11 - "ROBIN'S NEST":

ROBIN'S NEST......read this and see the pics and prepare to smile...and for those of us who are "empty nesters", prepare for the lump in your throat that is sure to come!

Nature at its best…you’ve just gotta smile.

http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=9479342&server=vime

Every parent knows the feeling of an empty nest!! A must see - this is so precious. Don't know how they photographed all this, but they did a great job !!!!

     Thanks again, Sweetie-Pies!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 05/26/11:

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though a whale is a very large mammal, its throat is very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. The teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human, it was impossible.

The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah".

The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?"

The little girl replied, "Then you ask him!"

Book of Love

Written by Warren Davis, George Malone and Charles Patrick

Recorded by The Monotones, 1957

[ I wonder, wonder who, bi du du, who
Who wrote the book of love ]

Tell me, tell me, tell me
Oh, who wrote the book of love
I've got to know the answer
Was it someone from above

[ repeat ]

I love you, darling
Baby, you know I do
But I've got to see this book of love
And find out why it's true

[ repeat ]

{ Chapter One says to love her
You love her with all your heart
Chapter Two, you tell her
You're never never never never ever gonna part
In Chapter Three remember
The meaning of romance
In Chapter Four you break up
But you give her just one more chance }

Oh,
[ repeat ]

Baby, baby, baby
I love you, yes I do
Well, it says so in this book of love
Ours is the one that's true

Oh,
[ repeat ]

{ repeat }

Oh,
[ repeat ]

Baby, baby, baby
I love you, yes I do
Well, it says so in this book of love
Ours is the one that's true

[ repeat ]
I wonder who (yeah)
Who wrote the book of love
