05/27/07 - NNHS Newsletter - Book of Love
“We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading.”

- B. F. Skinner
 (20 Mar 1904 - 18 Aug 1990)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This is still another of our "rerun" Newsletter themes - first seen over two years ago:

    From Chandler Nelms (Hampton HS - '63) of MD - 05/24/07 - "ALERT-ALERT-ALERT":

Please Read - Important Message!!

If you read the ALERT newsletter,

you know by now that Wayne, Joe, and I have been engaged in trying to secure contributions from you, the newsletter beneficiaries, for Carol and Paul in order to see them thru the next twelve months. And to those of you who so generously responded, we would like to thank you on behalf of Carol. However, based on a lack of response from so many others, our collective sense now is that lot's of you are hesitant to contribute because you have generously done so in the past only to be confronted with a new emergency a short time later. We recognize that there are limited resources available for this purpose but we do want you to understand one very critical point.

This appeal is the last time any of you will be asked for money on Carol and Paul's behalf. It is our firm belief that in one year's time, Carol and Paul will have in place a permanent solution to their financial issues. For Paul, hopefully that will be a new, well paying job. If that's not to be, then other means will be available where he can collect full social security benefits as he will have reached 65 years of age. That income could also be supplemented with part time work. Whatever the form it takes, the critical point here is they know that in twelve months they must become self sufficient again and they have the tools to do so.

But, this plan is still predicated upon the assumption that enough newsletter patrons contribute to this cause in order that enough funds are secured to see them thru these next twelve months. So, if you haven't yet committed to our plea, please search your conscience one more time and ask yourself if you are proud of your decision, whatever it may be. And rest assured we know first hand that while some of you would love to help, your own circumstances preclude your doing so currently. But if your hesitancy is due to a feeling of "how many more times" will this happen, then make your decision based on the knowledge that after this rally is completed, you will never hear from us again asking for financial support. THIS IS IT. Again, as indicated in the ALERT newsletter, our goal is to reach 100 contributors with each contributor providing a one-time contribution of $180 or a pledge to contribute $15/month for 12 months ($180) total.

No one ever said life was fair, although we all hope our friends will be.

Thank you all for your generosity, your caring, and your faithful readership.

Sustaining Underwriters and Emergency Responders - As you can see, this page is in the process of being seriously revamped.  As I am not sure which of y'all wished to remain anonymous, if you have contributed to this fund, please drop me a line and let me know your wishes.  Thanks so much!

Gentlemen, I am still completely overwhelmed.  Thank you so very much!

From Bobby Turpin ('58) of VA - 05/27/07 - "TYPHOON LOVE":

Dear Carol & Family:
Anne (Sawyer Turpin - '65 - of VA) and I hope this e-mail finds you and yours well this Memorial Day weekend.  Your Newsletter dated 5/26/2007, stated that you did not know whether to identify "contributors" or not.  I can think of no greater ministry towards helping to keep NNHS alive than the person who is solely responsible for this.  I think and pray for you (your family as well) EVERYDAY. PLEASE, list Anne and me, among those wonderful people whom you have identified. We will continue to help regularly in the future. I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH.  Our best to your sister    (Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC).
Best regards,
Bobby Turpin
NNHS Class of 1958

Bobby, you always seem to say the sweetest things - just what I need to hear, just at the exact moment when it will mean the most! Thank you so very much - for everything - and give Anne a hug for me!

From Ed Nichols ('62) of Northern VA to     From Chandler Nelms (Hampton HS - '63) of MD - 5/26/07 - "Yahoo message!!!":

Hi guys.

I mailed Carol the check today, Saturday, May 26th. I am anything but a whiz on the computer but the response seems to be lagging badly concerning help for Carol and Paul. I was just wondering if others have tried to reach you guys and had the same roadblock. I never use Yahoo so I have not a clue, but thankfully Chandler's second email address was fine. I tried all three email addresses again tonight, Sat. 5/26, and the same message came up for me. I seldom have problems with AOL (not always the case), but I have not run into anything like it. But, possibly, this has had a role in the response. Just food for thought. And thanks for your effort in helping    Carol ('65) and    Paul (Bardolph HS, IL - '61). You guys stood up when someone was needed.

Ed Nichols, NNHS Class of 1962

   WOWZERS!!!  Thank you, Eddie!

From Chandler Nelms (Hampton HS - '63) of MD - 05/27/07 - "RE: Yahoo message!!!"

Ed Nichols ('62 - of Northern VA) brought to our attention that there seems to be some sort of glitch in the newsletter (read below). When you attempt to link to Joe's, Wayne's or my personal email addresses at the end of the Please Read message, you get a Yahoo message that effectively won't let you go any further. My DARPA email link appears to be the ONLY one working correctly. It further appears to have been this way since the first ALERT newsletter went out. I went all the way back and got the same problem. This of course may be stifling readers that would otherwise be making contributions if they could contact us. Try it and you'll see what we mean. We need to immediately change the ending of the message somehow so that all four email addresses will be reachable.

Well, that was the weirdest thing I've seen in a long time!  The links were indeed all screwy, but I've no idea why that first one should have been that way.  As the others were all copied from the original, they all followed suit.  I've gone back and corrected all of them now.  They seem to be working from here.

   Thanks, Chandler - and Eddie!

   Many Happy Returns, Ladies!

  From Me ('65) of NC - 05/27/07:

Who loves books more than teachers??  How ironic that as I determined to make this our theme for the day, I found in reading this morning's Daily Press obituaries that we had lost our second NNHS teacher this week.

Mrs. Laurie K. Collier passed away Friday in Newport News at the age of 70.  I'll make her Memorial Newsletter tomorrow when the full obituary appears, but I started by adding her teacher page to the website today:

      - now with four images

      - new page, with two images plus an obituary

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 05/26/07 - "TWO BEAUTIFUL SONGS FOR THE SABBATH DAY":

I Can Only Imagine
Jesus Take The Wheel
   Thanks, Shari!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 05/19/07 - "Name that tune.":

Hi, Carol:
This is not about Trains, but about the lyrics of a song. Can anyone answer this trivia quiz without checking the internet for the lyrics?
A train leaves Kankakee en route to New Orleans with how many sacks of mail?
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Ohhh, well, without checking I've no clue.

   "Anyone?  Anyone?"

But, hey, Joe, I DO know where to find the Saga of the Two Trains!!!

Can ya hear that whistle blowin', Jean?!?

   Thanks, Adonis!

From My Daughter-in-Law, Bethany Winona Harty (Siuslaw HS, OR - '94) of IL - 05/21/07:

I thought I'd send you a few pics from this past weekend.  Aren't they lovely :)

I'll work on some more later.  I'm recovering from the LONG weekend today (by recovering, I mean cleaning the house and grocery shopping).  Maybe tomorrow......

love ya

me....aka.  your favorite person in the whole wide world :)

WOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI, Lady!  Nice job - on the costumes, the family participation, the antiquing of the images - all of it!

From My Daughter-in-Law, Bethany Winona Harty (Siuslaw HS, OR - '94) of IL - 05/21/07: "RE: Energy Saving lightbulbs - BUYER BEWARE":

We don't use energy saving light bulbs, because our house eats light bulbs. We change them about every 2 weeks, really. It's quite sad. The wiring in our house is screwy. Oh well. what do you expect from older than dirt!

YOWZERONI!!!   But instead you have all that old-fashioned charm, yes?  No??  Maybe so?!?   Thanks again, Bethany!

Book of Love

[ I wonder, wonder who, bi du du, who
Who wrote the book of love ]

Tell me, tell me, tell me
Oh, who wrote the book of love
I've got to know the answer
Was it someone from above

[ repeat ]

I love you, darling
Baby, you know I do
But I've got to see this book of love
And find out why it's true

[ repeat ]

{ Chapter One says to love her
You love her with all your heart
Chapter Two, you tell her
You're never never never never ever gonna part
In Chapter Three remember
The meaning of romance
In Chapter Four you break up
But you give her just one more chance }

[ repeat ]

Baby, baby, baby
I love you, yes I do
Well, it says so in this book of love
Ours is the one that's true

[ repeat ]

{ repeat }

[ repeat ]

Baby, baby, baby
I love you, yes I do
Well, it says so in this book of love
Ours is the one that's true

[ repeat ]
I wonder who (yeah)
Who wrote the book of love
