05/26/19 - NNHS Newsletter - John Wayne's 112th Birthday

“Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean.
It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday.”

“I never have really become accustomed to the 'John.' Nobody ever really calls me John... I've always been Duke
or Marion or John Wayne. It's a name that goes well together, and it's like one word - John Wayne.”

- John Wayne
(26 May 1907 - 11 June 1979)

John Wayne Graph Pattern - not free, but $9.99

The Duke Cowl by Tahlia Fernandez - "'Never apologize, Mister. It's a sign of weakness.' - John Wayne in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949): Reminiscent of the Duke's bandannas he wore in so many of his cowboy movies (see the one he wore in The Searchers, in particular), this cowl is simple and functional with just enough detail to add some interest. The Duke may be blocked to prevent curling, or may be unapologetically allowed to do as it will without blocking while keeping you warm. A quick, easy knit for that one skein of worsted weight yarn you just don't know what to do with." - not free, but only $1.92

John Wayne's Casserole Recipe - "This recipe was contributed by the American actor John Wayne in his last year, 1979, to a cookbook raising money for cancer. There has since emerged another casserole named 'John Wayne', but this is the original recipe, without beef in it. (See encyclopedia page on the casserole for the history of both versions.)"

The young mother skeptically examined a new educational toy. "Isn't it rather complicated for a small boy?" she asked the salesclerk.

"It's designed to adjust the child to live in today's world, ma'am," the shop assistant replied. "So basically, any way he tries to put it together is wrong."

Ballad of the Green Berets

Written and Performed by Sgt. Barry Sadler

Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men we'll test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Trained to live, off nature's land
Trained in combat, hand to hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage deep, from the Green Beret

Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men we'll test today
But only three win the Green Beret

Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her this last request

Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret
