05/24/09 - NNHS Newsletter - Red Rubber Ball

The hardest thing you can do is smile when you are ill, in pain, or depressed.
But this no-cost remedy is a necessary first half-step if you are to start on the road to recovery.

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 05/23/09 - "National Maritime Day":

Hi, Carol:

Thank you for selecting the theme "National Maritime Day" for your recent Newsletter to the "Typhoon Nation."

No other group of veterans of the Second World War were so ignored and so easily forgotten. It took our Congress many years to recognize these brave seamen who transported our troops, equipment, and materiel across the oceans. They did as much to win the war as anyone, under very dangerous conditions.

Thank you for making a page on your website to honor those men of the "Typhoon Nation" who served in the United States Merchant Marine.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

It was my privilege, Major Madagan!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 05/23/09 - "Not the spiders!!!":

I will take the trains any day!!!

    From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 05/23/09 - "431!":

Dear Carol,

I cannot imagine having that many people passing in front of my house, having the patience to group them or even notice their age and dress.
This is so because I keep my blinds drawn and can't count that high.
You are the best!

Tell
Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of IL) to hang tight, my prayers are daily.
Linda May ' 66

Thanks so much, Linda May! I'm pretty certain that most people who know me would dismiss me as fatuous, frivolous, and facetious, so you're always good for my ego!

From Suzanne Lyon Saunders (Warwick HS - '66) of VA - 05/23/09 - " Billy Feather ('64)":

Hi Carol,

Can you stand one more comment?  I knew Billy Feather in high school and drove his yellow TR-3 for several months when he lost his driver's license, I think because of a speeding ticket.  I learned how to speed shift and had a lot of fun while he was unable to drive.  He was my boyfriend around 1965-66. I was at Warwick High School and he was attending Christopher Newport.

Kit Thomas ('64) was a good friend of his and may have kept in touch with him.

Suzanne Lyon Saunders, Warwick High, 66

AHA! A definitive answer! Certainly, Suzanne - thank you so very much for the positive ID!

     From Me ('65) of IL - 05/24/09 - "CONGRATULATIONS!!!!"

Congratulations to       My #3 Son,  Randolph's (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL - '92 - of IL) classmate,     Matt Hughes (Hillsboro HS, IL - '92) of IL, for his win in Las Vegas last night over Matt Serra in UFC 98's World Welterweight Championship!

From My Sister, Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky ('59) of NC - 05/18/09:

A guy spots a sign outside a house that reads "Talking Dog for Sale."

Intrigued, he walks in.

"So what have you done with your life?" he asks the dog.

"Ive led a very full life," says the dog. "I lived in the Alps rescuing avalanche victims. Then I served my country in Iraq. And now I spend my days reading to the residents of a retirement home."

The guy is flabbergasted. He asks the dogs owner, "Why on earth would you want to get rid of an incredible dog like that?"

The owner says, "Because hes a liar! He never did any of that!"

   Thanks, Eleanor!

Red Rubber Ball

co-written by Paul Simon (of Simon and Garfunkel)
(b. 13 Oct 1941)

and

Bruce Woodley (of The Seekers), 1966
(b. 25 July 1942)

I should have known you'd bid me farewell.
There's a lesson to be learned from this
and I've learned it very well.

 Now I know you're not
the only starfish in the sea.
If I never hear your name again
it's all the same to me.

And I think it's gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.

You never cared for secrets I'd confide.
For you I'm just an ornament,
 Something for your pride.

 Always running, never caring,
 That's the life you live.
 Stolen minutes of your time
were all you had to give.

And I think it's gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.

The story's in the past with nothing to recall.
I've got my life to live and I
 don't need you at all

The roller coaster ride we took is
 nearly at an end.
I bought my ticket with my tears,
 that's all I'm gonna spend.

And I think it's gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.
