From the Daily Press - 05/22/14:

              Gale Fertitta Buchanan

WILLIAMSBURG - Gale Fertitta Buchanan, 73, passed away on May 20, 2014, surrounded by her family and friends. Born on December 12, 1940 in Hampton, VA to the late Jack and Louise Fertitta, she was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula and a 1959 graduate of Hampton High School. That same year she entered Elon College where she developed her love for working with children.

She taught in preschool at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist children's church until she went into the Newport News school system, where she retired after 25 years of service in Elementary Education. Gale was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newport News for many years.

She also enjoyed being a member of the Beta Sigma Phi, Shore Park Garden Club, and most recently the Red Hatters in Williamsburg, VA.

Above all, Gale loved her family and friends with all of her heart. Love, compassion and caring are the words that best describe Gale as she was truly an angel placed on earth. We will miss our mom, wife, nana, sister and friend. She will live on in the hearts of all she touched. She never gave up without a fight, and her strength inspired and influenced the lives of those around her. We have a lost a true angel to heaven and feel the sorrow and pain of our loss here on earth. However, Gale's strength and determination to live and fight the odds that were so heavily weighted against her are a true testament of her unwavering love for those friends and family members she so dearly loved.

Gale leaves to carry on her memory her husband of 49 years, Ronald L. Buchanan; her daughter, Cheryl Dronen and husband Gary; her son, Michael Buchanan and wife Christine; four adored grandchildren, Morgan and Madison Dronen, and Benjamin and Anna Elizabeth Buchanan; sister, Judy Gibson and husband Frank; nephew, Jeffrey Gibson and wife Lisa; niece, Kristen Trawitzki and husband Mark and their children, Kaila and Mark, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Donald Buchanan and wife, Patsy.

Special love goes out to the "Opus 9" group of friends who met monthly to keep her spirits high and shared each step of the journey with her. Also, love to her friends and family who supported her with cards, phone calls and prayers. The family wishes to express gratitude to Dr. Christina Prillaman, Susan Hubbard, and the entire staff of Virginia Oncology Associates for their skillful and unwavering care. She loved you all very much.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A Celebration of Gale's life will be held following visitation at 2:00 pm at the funeral home Interment will follow the service at Parklawn Memorial Park.

Gale was such a caring and loving person. Both Darden and I remember her and her husband fondly from high school and from the high school reunions. She will forever be in our memories. With love, Jackie and Darden Nelms

My deepest sympathy to the family. I had the pleasure of doing Gale's hair for the last decade (somewhere around that) and got to know her family quite well. She was truly an amazing woman. She loved her family deeply and she put up one heck of a fight, but now she can rest and I know she is most certainly in a much better place. Much love to Ronald and the family!

When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder

Lyrics and Music by James Milton Black (19 Aug 1856 - 21 Dec 1938), 1893

1. When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more
And the morning breaks eternal, bright and fair
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there!

2. On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise
And the glory of His resurrection share
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there!

3. Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care;
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there!

Chorus:
When the roll, is called up yonder,
When the roll, is called up yonder,
When the roll, is called up yonder
When the roll is called up yonder I'll be there!
