05/07/13 - NNHS Newsletter - Not a Second Time

“I was never one to patiently pick up broken fragments
and glue them together again and tell myself that the mended
whole was as good as new. What is broken is broken --
and I'd rather remember it as it was at its best
than mend it and see the broken places as long as I lived.

- Margaret Mitchell
(08 Nov 1900 - 16 Aug 1949)

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_a_Second_Time:

"Not a Second Time" is a song by John Lennon (credited to Lennon/McCartney) performed by The Beatles on their second United Kingdom album, With the Beatles. Lennon said he was "trying to write a Smokey Robinson or something at the time."[1]

This song inspired a musical analysis from William Mann of The Times, citing the "Aeolian cadence" (Aeolian harmony) of Lennon's vocals as the song draws to a close, and noting that the same chord progression appears at the end of Mahler's "Song of the Earth".[2] Lennon, years later, remarked: "To this day, I have no idea what [Aeolian cadences] are. They sound like exotic birds."[3] The actual meaning of the term "Aeolian cadence" is when a major key song resolves on the VI chord, which is the tonic chord of the relative minor key. The term derives from the fact that the Aeolian mode is rooted on the sixth step of the major scale.

The song was recorded in nine takes on 11 September 1963 at EMI Studios.[4]

QUICK DINNER -- Create Your Own Signature Mini Pie (and an easy way to get rid of leftovers!)

  Signature Mini Pie

Mix 1/2 cup of Bisquick, 1/2 Cup of Milk, and 2 eggs together for a base. (put about 1 tablespoon in each muffin cup)

Top with about 1/4 cup of any "fillings" you want. - Cheeseburger, Pizza, BLT, Chicken and Veggies, etc.... You can mix it up in the pan (any meat should already be cooked)

Then top with one more tablespoon of the "Bisquick Mixture" - and bake at 375 for 25-30. It's a great way to get rid of your leftovers! These can also be frozen! Just pop them into the microwave for a quick meal on the go!

Recipe from Betty Crocker

   GREAT IDEA! Thanks, Evelyn!

From My Daughter, Adrienne Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL) of NC (temporarily of MA) - 05/06/13 - "Perfect Couple Pie":

Perfect Couple Pie (Hot Fudge Peanut Butter Pie)

Ingredients

For the pie:

1 chocolate graham cracker crust
1 cup peanut butter
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature
1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, divided
1 jar (11.75 ounces) hot fudge topping, divided
½ cup sugar

For the topping:

2 tablespoons hot fudge
2 tablespoons peanut butter

Method

• In large bowl, beat peanut butter, cream cheese, and sugar until creamy. Fold in 3 cups Cool Whip. Spoon mixture into crust and smooth to edges.
• Remove 2 tablespoons hot fudge from jar and reserve in zip-loc plastic baggie for later. Heat remaining hot fudge according to package directions. Spread on top of peanut butter layer. Refrigerate pie until serving time.
• At serving time, carefully spread remaining Cool Whip on top of pie.
• Knead hot fudge in baggie with hands; cut tiny hole in corner of baggie and pipe over pie. Repeat with 2 tablespoons peanut butter and pipe on pie in opposite direction.
• Serve. If that isn’t making love to your taste buds, I don’t know what is.

WOW! I think I just passed out from a sugar overload just by looking at the picture! Thanks, Webby!

From Me ('65) of NC - 05/05/13 - "Crock Pot Bacon Cheese Potatoes":

  Crock Pot Bacon Cheese Potatoes

Ingredients

1/4 pound bacon, diced – I bake it first in the oven so that it is “done” and browned then I dice it and place in the crock pot.
2 medium onions, thinly sliced
4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced (or if you use a new potato or Yukon gold then halve)
1/2 pound cheddar cheese, thinly sliced (shredded is fine)
salt and pepper
butter
green onions (optional)

Instructions

Line crock pot with foil, leaving enough to cover the potatoes when finished – this will help to not stick and to steam the potatoes – also to keep them from getting discolored or mushy.
Layer half each of the bacon, onions and potatoes in the crock pot.
Season to taste with salt and pepper and dot with (real) butter.
Repeat layers of bacon, onions, potatoes and cheese. Dot with butter.
Cover with remaining foil.
Cover and cook on low for up to 6 hours (check at 4 hours – depending on your crock pot).
Add cheese for the last 20 – 30 minutes and enjoy!

Not a Second Time

Written by John Lennon (09 Oct 1940 – 08 Dec 1980); (Credited to McCartney/Lennon)

Recorded by The Beatles, 1963

You know you made me cry,
I see no use in wond'ring why,
I cried for you.

And now, you've changed your mind,
I see no reason to change mine,
I cried, it's through, oh.

Oh, you're giving me the same old line,
I'm wond'ring why,
You hurt me then, you're back again,
No, no, not a second time.
